As we graduate High School and finish our academic goals and settle down to start our own little family we always wish for the first born to be a “boy”.  This gives us, as a parent, to sort of relive our glory days and to live through our son’s life.  Some of us even go to the extreme as to direct our sons in the direction of playing sports without even asking them what they would like to do.  For most it is to raise our sons so that they will think that they must play football to be a boy and then a man.  It is some of these kids that when engaged in sports think they are indestructible because they have been conditioned that pain is something that they need to learn to just shake off and get back in there and give it the ole heave hoe.

To often these very same kids are the ones who at school are the ones that everyone can pick out.  They are the well known “bullies”.  This is because the coaches, as well as the dads, are drilling them that they are different and that they are stronger and meaner and bigger than the ordinary kids.  They don’t necessarily teach them to become bullies, it just seems to happen that way.  They are seeking attention and the only way they can get it is by being rough and tough both on the field and off. 

Now, on the flip side of the coin we have the kids that excel in sports naturally and it just seems they were born to play sports.  Everything they do it just comes to them, it is as though they were born with all the abilities of a professional player.  These are the well know kids at school that are known and revered as the popular crowd.

After years have passed and the kids are at the age where there being good at some particular sports could mean a big scholarship to go to some college is approaching the unthinkable happens, the kid no longer is interested in playing sports anymore and wants to get out of athletics due to the reason that they are no longer interested in playing.

WHAT!  After all the years of training and grooming to get him in the position where he will receive fame and notoriety, all the things you the parent dreamed about achieving in High School,  he is now just going to throw away?  Where did you go wrong? What happened?

What happened is called, burnout, and it happens to many a kid that as a youngster was more or less forced to play sports without encouraging them to do anything else. Nothing else matter but sports.  You can compare it to your job, you have worked the same job for years and now and then you just get burned out with it. It is the same with the kids that never had a childhood outside of sports.

The best thing that I could tell you is that when you have your first son, enjoy the wonder of it all. Cherish each moment you get to spend with him/her because they will grow up behind your back so fast that you will ask yourself, where did time go? Don’t be overbearing on your kids to go this one way or another in life that really doesn’t matter, but let them grow and enjoy the life that God has given them and more times than not they will choose their proper place in life. Now this is what you can be proud of!

Besides the fact that director Jeannot Szwarc takes an impersonal, workaday approach to the film, Jaws 2 manages to be both stylistically flat and openly cynical about its commercial intentions. Of chief interest here is Scheider’s performance, which wisely reflects the emotional fallout from Brody’s last trauma in his obsessive behavior here. –Tom Keogh
