The latest DVD version of the classic Stallone action flick provides several supplemental features, the most famous being the outstanding commentary by David Morrell who wrote the unique the film is based on. More on that in a moment.

First Blood is about a Vietnam vet named John Rambo who comes to a limited Washington location town (actually British Columbia) to acquire the last surviving comrade from his elite Green Beret unit. When he discovers that he too is plain, Rambo makes his arrangement into town for a bite to eat and instead winds up being arrested by the hick local sheriff (Brian Dennehy) . While in custody, Rambo is abused by the locals but manages to dash sparking an all out manhunt.

This film has 55 minutes of action out of 96 total highlighted by the jail hasten and subsequent budge. Jack Starrett is tall as the cop that does most of the abusing while Davis Caruso is glowing as the only deputy (among the surprisingly grand local force) that seems to have a conscience. Dennehy is superb as always and makes a superb opponent for Rambo. Richard Crenna is astronomical as Rambo’s broken-down CO and he and Dennehy play off one another quite well. Even though he has petite speaking parts, this is probably one of Stallone’s best performances highlighted by the “Vietnam speech” advance the slay of the film.

The film is presented in digitally remastered widescreen 16:9, and is without a doubt the best video presentation of First Blood to date. The movie was shot in the temperate rain forest of BC and is quite dim at times. However, the darkest scenes have been enhanced here and are great improved over the various VHS versions some of which are unpleasant. Sound is Dolby 2.0 only but not dreadful considering. Also included are a cute trivia game (come by all 10 just without a mistake to watch a Rambo cartoon), production notes, and a teaser and trailer. The “featurette” is nothing more than a glorified trailer.

Now on to the best feature of this DVD, one that is worth the notice of admission all by itself. If you are at all alive to in how films are made and the leisurely the scenes tidbits about Hollywood, then Race do not bound (or let your fingers do the walking online) to your local video store and accumulate this disc. Why? For the outstanding commentary of writer David Morrell. This talented man begins to yelp before the opening credits and does not conclude for 96 minutes. When he does you will wish he could have continued for 96 more. You will glean yourself listening again and again and picking up something modern each time. This is without a doubt far and away the best commentary on any DVD.

Here is unprejudiced a partial list of the things Morrell covers:

1.The many differences between his recent and the film-very intriguing stuff.

2.His experience when seeing First Blood the very first time.

3.The three act structure of films.

4.How he chose the name Rambo and other character names.

5.How First Blood place a number of precedents for the industry.

6.Why films were kept to 90 minutes in length for so long a time.

7.A touching legend about his son and Stallone.

8.The record of how Kirk Douglas was scheduled to play Troutman and why Richard Crenna ended up with the role.

And that is only scratching the surface.

In conclusion, First Blood was a precedent setting film featuring top-flight actors and some of the best believable conceal action. The unbelievable commentary of David Morrell caps off a substantial experience.

This review was first written in 2001. There are now several DVD versions of the film available. Check the special features carefully as the David Morrell commentary DOES NOT appear on all. It IS NOT included on the latest “Ultimate Edition” DVD. There is a commentary by Stallone instead as well as some other fresh features. I take the “Special Edition” version but you may want both if you are a fan.

I was fortunate to seek this on the sizable conceal and have to say it is not only one of my fav.Stallone films but one of my fav.films for all time. We all know the memoir of Rambo so I unbiased want to point out why this film is so classic. The script and music are kindly and even the supporting actors have grand lines(BUT WILL!! I HAVE TO BE AT THE DRUG STORE TOMORROW MORNING) Stallone has oh I’d say 30 lines of dialog in the whole movie

and yet it is one of his best. Action stars like Stallone don’t need dialog

they fair need to kick butt and that is what this movie does.

RAMBO:Is there someplace to eat around here?

WILL:There is a diner 15 miles down the road.

RAMBO:Is there something substandard with me eating here?

WILL:Yeah me.

RAMBO:Why you pushing me?

WILL:–”WHAT?!”

RAMBO:Why you pushing me I did nothing to you.

DEPUTY:Rambo…John J. Your going to talk to me. I Disclose TO GOD YOUR GOING TO TALK TO ME SOLDIER! I’m beginning to despise you(puts billy club underneath Rambo’s chin) A LOT!!!

Rather than review the exclaim of this almost universally beloved film, I’m impartial going to comment about the quality of the 2006 60th Anniversary Edition DVD itself. I’ve since written an updated review about a fresh edition of this title, now available in a “Two-Disc Collector’s Region.” Please secure that review — which was posted on December 13, 2008. (Amazon has posted my 2006 review in both places — even though the “60th Anniversary Edition” DVD is DIFFERENT from the “Two-Disc Collector’s Position”. Read my write-up for the “Two-Disc Collector’s Dwelling” — again, it’s DATED 2008 and too early to obnoxious among the “most excellent” reviews — to better settle which product you buy.)

I’ve owned nearly every version of this title in almost every format available on home video during the past 25 years. It’s upright that the Swear of this Viacom/Paramount DVD — including its special features — is identical to the Republic Pictures Home Video release more than 10 years ago.

However, this 60th Anniversary edition is spectacular for several different and extremely significant reasons. (I’ll address the criticisms some people have leveled about the sound on this 2006 DVD in a tiny bit, so stick with me.)

You don’t have to be a technical expert to immediately glance the striking improvement of the represent AND sound in this 2006 edition. The print is crystal-clear and in my thought, has more vividness and sharpness than ALL other previous releases of this title on home video.

Proof? I set aside my “traditional” THX-version DVD issued by Republic Pictures / Artisan Home Video (the weak DVD gold standard for this title) — into my Sony multi-changer DVD player — and watched and listened to every frame of this film AND its special features. I stopped and started this “older” DVD in several spots — and stopped and started the current 2006 Paramount edition repeatedly — so I could compare quality almost “side-by-side.”

Hands down — this 2006 version is fantastic. The spots and dirt have been wiped elegant, the sharpness and dissimilarity are arguably better than what film audiences saw 60 years ago. There are no conventional spots, no jumped frames and no lint, fiber or hair fragments along the edges or jumping across the hide. I enjoy the technicians at Paramount (which acquired Republic Pictures Home Video) — digitally cleaned EVERY frame of the last DVD release — so that the film now looks like a million dollars. It’s almost too pristine, if there is such a thing. No jump cuts, no “jump ahead” sound breaks, no fogged-out scenes, nothing outmoded — with the result being the cleanest and purest version of “It’s A Fantastic Life” ever issued in home video history.

It gets better. English subtitles were available on older DVD versions of this title, but the 2006 version has a cleaner typeface, wiping out some of the confusing and unnecessary attributions of “who’s saying what” that were disruptive to some hearing-impaired viewers. In this 2006 version, you’ll win a mostly straight, line-by-line reading of what’s being said — as it’s being said.

Meanwhile, the DVD’s special features — which include the same pair of documentaries produced in 1990 and 1991 — are identical in that they were shot on video tape hence there isn’t grand improvement in relate quality. However, subtitles that WERE NOT available for these special features — are NOW available in this 2006 edition. The only “extra” to the previous “gold standard” that remains unchanged — is the current 1946 trailer. Subtitles are not available and it has the same raggedness and dirt commonly seen with vintage trailers stored separately from the films they ancient to advertise.

I’m highly necessary of re-issued DVDs that seem nothing more than an excuse to squeeze more dollars out of buyers for the same material with original packaging. But this 2006 Paramount DVD version of “It’s A Amazing Life” is the best to date. It is NOT in color. (I enjoy a colorized version for younger people who can’t stand black-and-white. Despite controversy surrounding colorization, know that the 2007 “Two-Disc Collector’s Dwelling” has the same 2006 60th Anniversary black-and-white edition you explore here — plus a modern “colorized” version. This version uses the same pristine print — but has the added bonus of boasting the best “color” hues ever seen for this film, using the latest image technology available. Despite my preference for black-and-white, the quality of this original colorized version is impressive.)

Meanwhile, let’s address the criticisms about the sound on this fresh DVD. Go attend a tiny bit. Remarkable was made when Republic Pictures Home Video got the THX LucasFilm sound system seal of approval for “It’s A Unbelievable Life” during the 1990s. But it was calm two-channel mono with negligible equalization of sound effects. In this 2006 DVD, you’ll collect consistent two-channel mono and decent sound equalization to minimize “booming” and over-modulated portions in the film. In the faded versions, you had to turn down the volume a notch during the musical portions — and turn it support up when the dialogue came befriend. It’s a nit-pick, but you really study the contrast if you’re crazy enough to do a side-by-side comparison like I did.

As for the digital sound “pops” that perfectionists support bringing up — they’re honest. They’re even in the spots renowned by another lovely reviewer who listed time codes where you can regain them. But in my idea, unless you brace yourselves for them to reach like a booming teach — unless you purposely crank up your speakers to carry sound throughout your house — yeah, you “might” be annoyed if you seek information from the same perfection for a film made in 1946 as you would for a film made in 2006. Honestly, the disproportionate attention given to these digital “pops” is, in my notion, giving fence-sitters the impression that they’re supersonic cracks of lightning that will form people jump out of their seats. I didn’t twitch at all. They almost “blended” into the 60-year-old soundtrack. Yes, I know they’re digital defects, but do you remember the zillion “pops” scattered throughout dirty prints of “It’s A Astounding Life” with filthy optical soundtracks? The audio on this 2006 DVD serene wins. You have EVERY Accurate to expect perfection for your dollars. But as a person who’s more fastidious than average — I don’t absorb most buyers will care about a few “pops” in a film that’s this ancient. Combine the overall improvements with the relatively coarse cost of this DVD — and I calm say this is the BEST experience of “It’s A Fabulous Life” I’ve ever SEEN and HEARD on home video.

Finally, another reason to win this DVD. It’s aged news to some, but it’s not widely known that this version of “It’s A Improbable Life” can only be broadcast by NBC. It old to air a zillion times during the holidays on every TV residence on earth. It was a expeditiously map to acquire tired of even a clean film you reflect you know by heart. But Viacom/Paramount now owns this version of “It’s A Unbelievable Life” outright and NBC has unique licensing rights to air it fair once or twice after Thanksgiving. This is a advantageous thing for future generations to bask in.

So junk the frail, consume this version and be delighted. It may feel painful, but it’s worth it. And no, I DON’T work for Amazon OR for Paramount Home Video.

A beautifully crafted film that proved to be the apex of triple Oscar-winner (1934, 1936, 1938) Frank Capra’s illustrious career, and the epitome of his cycle of works celebrating the “approved man”. Mr. Deeds found himself suddenly wealthy, Mr. Smith went to Washington as a Senator, and John Doe became the focus of a socio-political movement; but “Life”’s George Bailey never distinguishes himself outside of his miniature hometown of Bedford Falls — his brother Harry is the one who becomes a war hero, and his friend Sam Wainwright is the one who achieves financial success. George’s triumph is simply his personal integrity, his code of ethics, and his strength of character — his goodness, if you will — during the unexciting course of his ordinary, mundane existence. In this respect, George is more an Everyman than any other Capra protagonist, titillating strong audience identification and response.

In one of the most comely performances ever given in an American film, James Stewart is superior as George. It’s not an easy role to play because so mighty conceal time is spent focusing on George’s subtle reactions to the world around him. One amazing moment comes at the dispute place when George slowly begins to bear the news of his brother’s unusual marriage and novel career opportunity, and how his brother’s fortune will extinguish his beget hopes of leaving Bedford Falls and the family business. Stewart’s face is amazing in this scene, as surprised realization fades into still disappointment and finally, gentle graciousness and acceptance. Stewart’s tour de force is given strong wait on by a trustworthy cast of Capra stalwarts, including Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell, H. B. Warner, and the phenomenal Beulah Bondi (as George’s mother) . And Donna Reed, in one of her first romantic leading roles after a number of years playing supporting ingenues and bits, is honorable in the warm but unglamorous role of George’s loving wife, Mary.

The Republic Home Video DVD is definitely the edition of this classic to absorb. Like the LaserDisc before it, the DVD offers a crystal definite, beautifully restored film-to-video transfer which will amaze and delight anyone who is familiar only with the base multi-generational VHS cassettes, or the poor colorized version, that were commonly screened befriend in the slow 1970’s and 1980’s. There are some nice bonus features on the DVD, including a “making of” documentary and the theatrical trailer. This is one DVD that you’ll never regret adding to your home theatre collection!

Trivia note: If you’re a fan of this movie, try finding a copy of film historian David Thomson’s 1985 current “Suspects” which continues George’s legend and relates the characters from this movie to many others (did you know that Donna Reed’s “Mary Bailey” is actually the sister of Gene Tierney’s “Laura”?!, etc.) … ample fun!

The Book of John is treated like the finely wrought fragment of literature it is. The material is adapted with fidelity as a self-contained work. Seeing it as a complete anecdote is noteworthy different than taking elements of the life of Jesus out of context.

A lot can be said about the adaptation, directing, acting, production originate and music — but what stands out is that the sum of these parts is mighty greater than the separate elements, as elegant as they are. Dare I say this is a work of inspiration?

The role of Jesus in world history deserves consideration in the light of the indecent religious fanatacism rampant today from the so-called People of the Book. Who was this person who claimed to be Son of God and Son of man? Factually, the apostle John details only a few points in the life of the Man who conquered death. But John says “Bear in the resurrection and you have eternal life now.” How radical is that?

“The Gospel of John” does not vexed away from a blunt sage of the role of the Roman and Jewish powers in the assassinate of Jesus; however, the movie makes it abundantly positive why the Pharisees saw Jesus as a threat. In today’s world He’s composed a threat to those who study power alone,

For me, what jumped out of the film and quiet echoes in my mind is the several times Jesus asks, “Why do you abhor me? ” That demand reverberates in today’s headlines.

In a politically right world, we no longer have public conversations about the subjective truth of the life of Jesus. Or the meaning of that solitary life. With advances in quantum physics, we believe the fundamental nature of of matter, time and consciousness. The Gospel of John touches on all these things with sublime power and insight.

Like in any other movie, this one richly rewards the suspension of disbelief. Surrender to a distinguished film that will haunt you long after final go out. Finally I understand why those early followers of Jesus said: “We are not as those who have no hope.”

The fresh DVD release (quick out of print) has three discs with detailed extras that shroud all the major production elements.

A later release has a two hour version of the film, very nicely edited, as well as the current three hour theatrical version.

Both versions of the film are beautifully transferred in a widescreen format that fills newer 16:9 screens.

I review DVDs for a local paper. I notice a lot of movies and “The Gospel of John” is among the best films I’ve seen in the last year. It’s actually about something profound and acutely relevant. And it is rendered with style and grace.

If you’ve seen Jesus’ crucifixion in Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ,” gawk the rest of the anecdote in “The Gospel of John.”

The Gospel of John is, in my humble thought, the best Biblical-based movie since The Gospel According to St Matthew. The Gospel of John was filmed in Toronto using unknown actors and a British director. The intent of the Producers was to indicate the text of the book with no embelishments or viewpoints, letting the words protest for themselves and leaving the viewer to scheme their bear conslusions. The film accomplished this beautifully. The result is a grand presentation that, while three hours long, seemed to waft by. I never got bored or tired, and felt like I had been there 2 hours or less.
Sadly, it gets mediocre reviews from the “sophisticated” reviewers who cannot be pleased the simple beauty and power of the words as written by John without the assist of post-modern interpretation.
I understand it is only showing in runt theaters in the South, then going straight to video. If it is in a theatre in your city, go watch it. If not, net the video when it comes out. It is well worth the trace.

I have enjoyed this DVD. Learning about the lives of those who wrote these beloved hymns makes singing them even more arresting and inspirational. What would have made the DVD more gratifying, though, is if all stanzas of the hymns had been performed.

This is a gigantic project. It is an effective dramatization of the stories of some of our most beloved hymns. The performances are gigantic. One thing that impressed me is that they had an African American soloist declare “Astonishing Grace”, written by a conventional slave trader who repented.

Now and then, it can be a staunch pleasure to dip into the years and pull up an older movie for a night of “couch tatering.” Not that this is such an “musty” movie… but worn enough that the differences between today’s special accomplish dazzle and flash and 1969 are evident in pacing, dialogue, general style. Today’s movies sometimes are lost in technical fireworks. This movie pleases with its simple quality of safe actors who interact well with each other and stand on their fill acting strength without too many fireworks.

And calm, the director, James Goldstone, deserves kudos for his creativity and innovativeness throughout the movie. The opening scenes are new for 1969, beginning with a close-up of a buttery yellow dandelion, racy through clips of families and racing fans gathering together. Of brand are clips at the Indianapolis urge track - a scene of a misty morning at the track the day of the Indy 500, scenes of fans entering the park, hurry car drivers and mechanics in tense preparations, increasing adrenalin, burgeoning crowds. I have yet to assist the Indy 500, but seeing these scenes certainly made me hope that soon enough I might.

My fellow “couch taterer” and I had lively conversations offering the male/female viewpoint on the scene of infidelity that centers the site - the reasons slow the betrayal, if not excuses, the ramifications to all keen, including the son played by Richard Thomas, the responsibilities befalling all, the likelihood of a reuniting at movie’s kill.

In short, when a movie catches your imagination, makes you want to visit the set and event portrayed, and gives food for concept and discussion at its extinguish, then this is a movie worth adding to a collection, whether one is a hurry fan or not.

This movie is often mentioned as a member of the enormous pantheon of classic bustle movies, and it does belong there but it is more of a bottom feeder compared to “Great Prix” and certainly “Le Mans”. It is not the quality of the speed footage or the throughout mountainous performances of Newman, Woodward, and a very junior Richard Thomas, impressive on his movie debut. It is more the script that is the plight, and the movie lacks crucial time in the beginning to design the characters and their relationships. Robert Wagner is a used link in this movie since he never establishes himself as the friend and rival of the Newman character Frank Capua, and the whole delivery of his allotment in the affair with Capua’s wife is passe. Where “Le Mans” does very worthy with tiny words, this movie sometimes fails to achieve the relationship drama in key scenes, yet is very touching at times.

The track drama on the other hand is captured flawlessly, and the viewer gets some very provocative impressions on how the Indy 500 were hurry in the behind 60ies, impartial before the hayday of the snakepit. With the apt level of expectation this is an delicious movie, and the quality of the DVD leaves nothing to desire.

Hey everyone the 28 episodes of Bewitched Season 7 is coming to us this February. This includes the Salem Saga episodes, everybody’s well-liked Christmas episode from Bewitched “Sisters at Heart”, and “Sam’s Conventional Man”.

The Seventh Season begins with “To Go or Not to Go that is the Seek Information From”. Other classic episodes are “Mother-in-Law of the Year” and the special effects in the episode are improbable. We observe Samantha playing the tooth fairy in the 14th episode which includes two parts in “Mary the Trustworthy Fairy”, which guest stars the all time hilarious Imaogene Coca. This season also is the last season to feature Uncle Arthur, and he makes his final appearance in “The House That Uncle Arthur Built”. He leaves all his practical jokes at Sam and Darrin’s to mark his unusual girlfriend, but soon realizes if she doesn’t savor him for him she isn’t worth it.

One of the wildest episodes from Season 7 is where Sam and Darrin and Larry and Louise all trade places. Dr. Bombay is called in to fix the spot. Other episodes include “Darrin Goes Ape”, “Money Contented Returns”, Sam’s Psychic Pslip”, and “Samantha’s Magic Mirror”. In the later episode she tries to boast Esmeralda’s confidence by helping her with her customary boyfriend so each time she looks in the mirror she sees a resplendent woman.

The majority of people who are Bewitched fans say out of the Dick Sargent years, that Season 7 is their celebrated season with him. It is also one of my well-liked seasons too. The Salem lope and the Christmas episode are some of the best that the note offered in it’s 8 season hurry. So Bewitched fans pick up ready for Season 7 on February 3, 2009.

Note: During the hiatus period of season 6 & season 7 a fire destroyed the position of kitchen, so William Asher producer of the note and Elizabeth’s husband at that time decided to steal the display to film many scenes in Salem. The entire cast and crew were there and I deem that’s why everyone is so anxious for this special season.

It has taken so long for Bewitched to reach to dvd, when season one and two came out I idea, it’s Bewitched the rest of the seasons will approach shortly, bad,its been a long wait and I almost regretted tossing out my VHS copies I made on tv long ago, but now they are coming out and I can seek some episodes I have missed terribly by tossing my VHS out, if season seven is coming out now it can’t be too long before the final season 8 is released with tranquil some gem of episodes to the kill, I deem Bewitched was up for a ninth season but prouducer william asher was devorcing wife Liz and picked up Temperatures Rising to damage her plus she was tired of the explain after 8 years too, tremulous of being typecast as Samantha she turned to tv movies and proved she was and awesome actress in many tv movies that were unbiased fantastic and proved she could do more than Samantha (Which she born to Play) . She probably would have done a ninth season had ABC not pulled the fling then. Season 3 is the best AND the worst of 24. Season 1 was suspense, Season 2 was action. The producers attempted to combine the two for the third season, and in many cases they succeeded. The final seven episodes are as tense as the first 13 of Season 1 (and that’s saying something!), with a later episode in particular (in which main villain Saunders orders the death of CTU head Ryan Chappelle) ranking in as probably the best single episode the show’s ever done. However, there was a very, very tremendous scrape with the third season of 24: the writers had no belief what they were doing.

This isn’t lazy speculation. The writers in fact admitted this, toward the waste of the season, during a massive publicity push by Fox to glean aid viewers who’d worn away over the year. That brings me to Jack. In Season 1, he was an ordinary guy with a wife and kid, who when needed could turn into a superheroic man of action. Season 2 went even more into the superhero route, and I have to admit that I like the Season 2 version of Jack best. But in Season 3, he’s impartial a mess. In the first episode we score out that he’s curved on heroin, and for the most fragment of the season, he verges on the edge of darkness. Seriously, Jack Bauer is mostly an anti-hero in Season 3. Don’t be fooled by the movie’s alleged esoterism. Director Spike Jonze and real-life screenwriter Charlie Kaufman serene conception on telling a chronicle that has universal appeal. Both are quick-witted and decidedly kooky, and drop in fancy with exotic British women. Comparisons of the films as wholes have been made, but Punch-Drunk Treasure is decidedly more artsy and classical in sensibility…requiring patience to relish its beauties. Adaptation for all its weirdness is more hooked on making the audience have a noble time (but with brain and oddball sense of humor attached of course) .

An argument exists that this movie’s utterly uncommon and warped conclusion is a cop-out. Though i daren’t spoil the surprise of what happens, the plan that Jonze and Kaufman issue is one that requires deep consideration on the section of the film viewer. Is it a cop-out if there’s a reason unhurried the cop-out? Afterall, we only know what we glimpse. Can a movie rely on implications and net away with it? These are questions Jonze and Kaufman invite the viewer to pore over. Adaptation is a thought-provoking but detached viscerally moving shot of pure cinema.
