Everyone knows the film and loves it, that’s why we’re here checking it out on this page. But what about this DVD package? If you look at the price, you have to question is it really worth it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Help!! Click Here

When I first read about the Deluxe Edition, I thought the price would be around $50 like most other Deluxe Edition DVDs out there. At $95, this is way too much for what they’re offering. Yes, you get all this:

- a reproduction of Richard Lester s original annotated script

Buy,Download, Or Stream Help!! Click Here

- 8 lobby cards

- poster

- 60-page book with rarely seen photographs and production notes from the movie

… but unless they are signed by at least one Beatle, I wouldn’t pay that much. Yes, Richard Lester’s annotated script is great, but wait awhile and you’ll probably find a reproduction online sometime. The lobby cards and poster are great, but those are not the main reasons for the price inflation. The 60 page book would seem to be the main reason for the price hike, but look at other Beatles books out there. The paperback version of The Beatles Anthology has 368 pages, weighs 2.2 pounds, and has over 1,300 photographs. The price? LESS THAN A THIRD of what this Deluxe Edition of Help is going for.

Yes, all these extras are nice, but it’s not worth the price, and I’m a huge Beatles nut who buys everything they make. At this moment, I’m going to buy the regular edition which has been restored with great picture and a 5.1 soundtrack. Plus, the second disk has great extras (could be better if they had Paul or Ringo commenting) that will suffice. Especially for the price.

Drop the price on this Deluxe Edition, guys. If you do that, people will buy.

This was the first Beatles film I saw. From the first minutes of the film I was hooked! I became an instant Beatle fan.

A religious cult is after Ringo because he is in possession of thier sacrificial ring. There are several failed attempts to obtain the ring: stealing it at night as he sleeps, grabbing it when he posts a letter, the elevator scene, getting the ring at a restaurant and even sawing around his drum set so he will fall through to the basement as the Beatles record “You’re Gonna Lose That Girl”. Despite these failures, Clang (Leo McKern), the cult leader, is more determined than ever to get the ring from Ringo!

Ahme (wonderfully played by Eleanor Braun), a priestess of the cult is secretly working with the Beatles to keep them out of harms way.

Added to the mix are two bumbling scientists Professor Foot and Algernon (Victor Spinetti and Roy Kinnear respectively), and a Scotland Yard superintendent played by Patrick Cargill. To Cargill everything is “famous” (the famous Ringo, famous Beatles, famous plan).

John, Paul, George and Ringo are all charming as ever. The settings run from England, to the ski slopes of Austria to the Bahamas.

There are so many funny things in this movie that you can’t just watch it one time and catch them all.

The soundtrack to this movie is awesome: “Help!”, “The Night Before”, “I Need You”, “Another Girl”, “You’re Gonna Lose That Girl”, “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away”, “She’s A Woman” and “Ticket To Ride”.

It’s such a shame that MPI is no longer producing this movie. I truly hope another distributor will be able to gain the rights so it will once again be available.

It is well worth the trouble of hunting a copy of this movie down because everything about it is timeless.

“The Three Faces of Eve” broke new ground when it was released. It was the first examination of multiple personality disorder in a dramatic setting. Joanne Woodward gives a stunning performance as Eve a southern housewife who suffers from migranes, seems in constant emotional turmoil and has memory lapses. Her psychiatrist Dr. Luther (played by the marvelous character actor Lee J. Cobb) believes he’s treating a common form of depression but he’s startled to discover during one of his sessions that he’s not speaking with Eve but with a whole different person. Based on the famous book documenting the real case (and not a “novel” as per the DVD case) by Corbett Thigpen, MD and Harvey Cleckley MD, Nunnally Johnson’s script may be a bit pedantric for audiences today but there’s still powerful performances and sharp direction that makes it worthwhile.

This special edition from Fox part of its “Studio Classics” collection includes a commentary by film historian Aubrey Solomon. Solomon’s commentary provides precise and fascinating tidbits about how the film varied from the book and from the real case in addition to the usual background on the production of the movie. There’s also a Movietone News Reel included of the Academy Awards (Joanne Woodward won for Best Actress). The original theatrical trailer is included and the restored image and sound are quite good.

Well worth picking up for fans of classic Hollywood movies from the 50’s. My only complaint is Fox should have done a featurette on the making of the movie with interviews of Woodward and others and/or an alternate commentary track from the actress discussing the making of the movie.

Joanne Woodward gets one of those roles that most actresses must dream about - the opportunity to play a character with three distinct personalities. The film centres on this woman’s attempt to regain her life with the assistance of a psychiatrist played by Lee J. Cobb. Woodward does a very good job of creating various personalities and balancing the role. I wish I knew more about multiple personalities and psychiatry to know how accurate the film is, because I found parts of it hard to believe. The way the hypnosis is presented seems to me to be far too easy and simple, and to be honest, we don’t actually get to see very much of how the doctor helped the young woman. If you look to the film less as a case study and more as a piece of drama, you will find much to enjoy about it. And regardless of how factual and accurate it is, The Three Faces of Eve was an important step in presenting mental illness to the public, and for that reason also, it deserves to be seen.

THE THIN MAN is a landmark film in so many ways that it is difficult to over-estimate either its impact or its brilliance. Based on the popular novel by Dashiell Hammet, the film presents us with a completely egalitarian husband and wife who trade witticisms as freely as they mix cocktails–and the concept was so completely unexpected that it proved extremely controversial in the 1930s and even today still sets the standard for witty comedies in which couples engage in clever verbal sparring. The script is sharp and clever; the cinematography by James Wong Howe anticipates later film noir by mixing glossy black and white beauty with an underlying grittiness; W.S. Van Dyke’s direction is fast paced and never allows your attention to wander; the supporting cast is remarkably fine; and the production values offer MGM at the height of its considerable powers.

All of this would be enough to make THE THIN MAN memorable, but what really elevates it into a rarified atmosphere is the chemistry between leads William Powell and Myrna Loy, who handle their lines like sparkling rapiers, playing a combination of dry wit and unexpectedly silliness in high relief against a remarkably dark tale of multiple murder. Hard drinking, and mixing socially with both the uppercrust and the underworld, they are the people we would like to be in the sort of relationship we would like to acheive: glamorous, stylish, intelligent, and having tremendous fun as they work together to track down a missing inventor who may or may not be responsible for his lover’s sudden murder. Although Powell and Loy made numerous films together, including five sequels to this one, THE THIN MAN shows them at their zenith, and I can think of no other screen couple to date who have played so effectively together.

Regrettably, the DVD release has not been restored, and although the print is crisp it does contain a number of blemishes; similarly, although the DVD does include trailers for all of the “Thin Man” films Powell and Loy made, the bonus features hardly do justice to the film’s inexhaustible charms. Still, I do recommend the DVD over a VHS for the simple reason that you are likely to return to the film again and again, hoping some of the Powell-Loy sophistocation will rub off–and in the process you are likely to wear out a VHS in fairly short order. Of all the many films I have seen and enjoyed, this is probably the one I have watched most often, and I cannot recommend too highly. A must have for your collection.

“Would you mind putting that (gun) away? My wife doesn’t mind, but I’m a very timid fellow…” Talk about memorable movie lines! The Thin Man is simply one of the best detective films I have ever seen, and one of my favorite movies. William Powell and Myrna Loy star as Nick and Nora Charles, recently of California. Back in the Big Apple with Asta, their “courageous” sidekick pooch, the two drink (”Want a drink?” “What do you think?”), dine , and solve a murder case(reluctantly, on Nick’s part) while giving the audience the time of their lives. Cleverly written and brilliantly played are Nick and Nora themselves, and William Powell and Myrna Loy rival Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. I give this film two VERY enthusiastic thumbs up, and recommend these for anyone with a good taste for movies in general. Who could forget Nick blasting a hole through the window and pretending to be asleep? Or Nora’s first appearance, taking a huge spill as Asta drags her towards Nick? And who could forget that last endearing threat to Asta by Nora-”If you let anything happen to him, you’ll never wag that tail again!” How…sweet.

There is something about this movie that sticks with you long after you have watched it. Is it the way the story starts? The way it ends? The way your primary expectations are not met, and yet you find something else that you didn’t expect? Hard to say, but it eventually matters very little. You are moved, you are disturbed, and you keep thinking about it… It beats those blockbusters that you forgot five minutes after you stepped out of the movie theater by a long shot.

I personally love movies where I am unable to predict anything. How refreshing and disturbing!

It is a movie made by a Russian director, with outstanding Russian actors (the kids!), but there’s nothing “Russian” about the story. It is a “universal” story of a father returning to his wife and children after a twelve-year unexplained absence and taking his two sons - to whom he is a perfect stranger since he left when they were very little - on a fishing trip.

From then on, “unexpected” is the guideline and you hold your breath. What is going to be revealed? What is going to happen? How will the three characters deal with their new relationship?

You’ll have to watch to find out…

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Return! Click Here

The photography is beautiful, and the score at times adds real power to the images.

A must-see movie for cinema buffs, not for the average “movie goer”.

“The Return” is one of the best movies to have recently come out of Russia. Director Andrei Zvyagintsev, who has been compared to Tarkovsky by quite a few critics, does a wonderful job, and so do the three main actors Konstantin Lavronenko (the father) and Vladimir Garin and Ivan Dobronravov (as Andrey and Vanya, the sons).

The movie opens with the two brothers running. They play on the windy lakeshore with their friends, jumping off a tower into the dark water. The younger boy is too scared to jump, but too reluctant to climb down for fear of being branded a chicken. When his worried mom ultimately finds him, he declares that he would have died up there if she hadn’t. Life flows by as usual. It changes when the brothers come back home one day and their mom whispers to them, “Be quiet, your father is sleeping”. Their father (with suggested links to the Russian mafia) had not been home in the last twelve years and their only recollections about him are from an old black and white photograph. He plans a weeklong fishing trip with the kids to get to know them again. He is a stranger to them, and in contrast to their mother, is someone who doesn’t tolerate childhood tantrums and sulking and wants them to grow up and learn to deal with life the hard way. The younger boy has a miserable time, while the elder one is torn between suspicion and the desire to bond with his father. They eventually start out for an island and when the boat’s motor splutters and stops, their dad makes them row. Exhausted, they reach the island … it is here under the grey skies that the story reaches its unexpected climax.

Throughout the movie the atmosphere is gloomy and the dialogue is sparse. The movie was shot in the Siberian pine forests near the border of Russia and Finland, and the overcast sky and the drizzle work to complement the sombre moods of the characters. A lot of what the audience carries away from the movie are only suggested and never explicitly mentioned. At the end of it, we realize that we know hardly anything about the characters that we had been following for the past 105 minutes other than watching their emotions at play. All these work together to transform this thriller into an unsettling psychological study seeped in Russian mysticism.

In “Young in Heart” Miss Ellen Fortune (Minnie Dupree) is a painfully lonely elderly woman, traveling on a European train. She meets the rather roguish, wholly unusual Carlton family; George-Anne (Janet Gaynor), Richard (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.), Leslie (Paulette Goddard), Col. Anthony (Roland Young) and Marmy (Billie Burke); a rambunctious pack of congenial connivers. Recently deposed from their perch on the Riviera, the Carlton’s decide that Ellen is just such a wealthy fop, ripe for their picking. Ellen, however, is not as easily cajoled out of her savings. Forced to regroup their efforts, the con-artists are delivered into unfamiliar territory before getting their way; they’re going to have to work for it! Richard Wallace’s direction allows for just the right amount of is sensitivity and humor to prevail in a film that provides heart-warming results. After an unfavorable preview, “Young at Heart” had its downtrodden ending revamped: the result; two Academy Award nominations and a fun-loving frolic for all time.

MGM’s DVD is rather impressive. The B&W picture exhibits a very nicely balanced gray scale with smooth, solid blacks and very clean whites. Age related artifacts are present throughout but do not distract. Some minor edge enhancement crops up but pixelization is kept to a minimum. Overall the picture will surely not disappoint. The audio is mono but more than adequate for a film of this vintage. There are no extras.

This warm and delightful charmer might just be the best classic film you’ve probably never seen. Richard Wallace helmed this hilarious film based on the story “The Gay Banditti” by I.A.R. Wylie about a “family” of shallow scoundrels who find that pretending to be decent isn’t really all that difficult. A sharp and funny screenplay by Paul Osborne and a playful score from Franz Waxman make this one of David O. Selznick’s best productions. A 1930’s cast that dreams are made of includes Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Janet Gaynor, Paulette Goddard, Richard Carlson, Roland Young, Billie Burke, Henry Stephenson, and Minnie Dupree as Miss Fortune.

Our group of rascals are on the French Riviera about to get rich when they are politely asked to get out of town by the police. Rick (Douglass Fairbanks Jr.) was about to marry rich and put the family in the black for life. His “sister” George-Anne (Janet Gaynor) had just discovered too late that her mark, Duncan Macrae (Richard Carlson), wasn’t wealthy at all. He did give her a ring that has been held in his family for years, but she can’t understand why thinking about him makes her cry. Rick is wide-eyed at her musings about people who actually marry for love, and in an hilarious moment in which she is trying to understand her melancholy, she tells Rick: “How can I be in love with him? He hasn’t any money!”

Roland Young is the father, Sahib, who poses as a former Bengal Lancer, and Billie Burke is the mother, “Marmy.” She can barely keep up with her husband’s yarns of India, and at one point in the film tells a group that Rick and George-Anne were born there but she’s never been, but would like to go one day!

Given train tickets to London just to get them off the Riviera, George-Anne is shocked to discover that Duncan, despite having been made aware of what they were doing, has followed her. He thinks she’s not like the rest of her family and can be “cured” and she tries to convince him for the rest of the film that she’s just as worthless as they are! Trying to lose him, George-Anne meets a kind, sweethearted but lonely old lady named, appropriately enough, Miss Fortune. She is looking for a family to love and when they discover she is wealthy, they warm up to her in a big hurry.

George-Anne and Rick save her life when the train wrecks and soon they are all staying in her huge home, “working” her until she changes her will and they are set for life. George-Anne has gone a bit soft though, and as the others take–gulp–jobs, so they can pretend to be normal people, they slowly discover that they really want to be what the kind Miss Fortune (Minnie Dupree) thinks they are.

Duncan, still trying to win over George-Anne, gets Sahib a job selling cars. He tries to refuse it in a very funny scene but George-Anne forces him to accept the offer. Since it’s pretty much the same thing as a con, he is so successful at it he becomes the head of the London branch! The very fast car he sells is called The Flying Wombat!

Rick, meanwhile, discovers the pretty Leslie Saunders (Paulette Goddard) and charms her into giving him a job as a mail sorter. She begins to wear on him and he starts reading about engineering. When he is honest with her about what he and his family are doing, she is disturbed by his seeming lack of regret for how they are using Miss Fortune. Leslie isn’t quite sure it’s all an act, however, and she may be right.

Miss Fortune has grown on all of them and Rick begins to wonder if they’ve actually become decent people and are no longer just pretending. When Miss Fortune has a serious spell and it is discovered she may not have her wealth anymore, the truth might just come out.

Fairbanks and Gaynor are wonderful here, and would stand out even more were it not for the equally endearing performances from the rest of the cast. This is a fabulous classic with a very special mood. It is sweet, hilarious, sentimental, and full to the brim with charm. I can’t recommend this film any higher or I would. This is not a rental. This is a sparkling diamond every film buff must own, so it will be close at hand to watch over and over.

Lucid, engaging, and comprehensive does not adequately describe Sir Kenneth Clark’s magnificent survey into Western Civilization. For a series over 40 years old, the audio is remastered, the transfers are remarkably clean, and the content and opinions of the host hardly seem dated. Clark effectively interweaves music, art, science and architecture into a broad sweeping portrait that defines Western thought. For those critics who find Clark’s praise for Western art either superficial or superfluous have probably been watching and listening to the typical PBS tripe directed to an audience with a junior high vocabulary with an attention span to match.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Civilisation: The Complete Series! Click Here

Clark is a splendid presenter and teacher whose enthusiasm for his work clearly shows. It’s all here, from the ancient Greeks to the modern age (well actually, circa 1969 when the series was made), while “Civilization” is a wonderful introduction to the “humanities”–something that they used to teach in college, but now supplanted by courses and programs of dubious relevance and replete with politically correct content.

If you snoozed during your mandatory art or humanities courses in college or just found them as an opportunity to catch up on some other homework during lecture, let Sir Kenneth Clark explain to you why these things still matter today and help to define our culture and our lives. For slightly more than what you would pay for one class at a local community college, you can enjoy a most superlative achievement in truly “higher education.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Civilisation: The Complete Series! Click Here

Unlike the virtually unletterd commentators and hosts on the “History Channel” who apparently utter a profound “Wow, cool!” every time they are confronted with some architectual wonder or historical artifact, Clark’s presentation, scholarly but never “stuffy,” is a refreshing and welcome antidote.

Clark’s remarks and insight are as on target as they are illuminating–see the installment featuring Michaelangelo and the Renaissance and you will understand why. Now, if only the BBC would release Alistair Cooke’s “America” with Region 1 encoding for all of us to enjoy on this side of the pond…

If you have never seen this series before and are interested in art history, you just landed in a honey jar. Clark takes us on a 1,500 year journey through Western Civilization starting roughly at the end of the Roman Empire and ending in mid 20th century. He tells us straight out that his aim was to follow the history of Western European civilization as seen through the eyes of its artists. Why the limitation to only Western European civilization? Apparently, Lord Clark wanted to keep the series to a manageable length. The series is over 13 hours long as it is, and one can only wonder what it would have gone on to become had he included the Egyptian, Greco-Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Asian, African and Pre-Columbian cultures. The mind boggles. With Civilisation, Clark has done an incredible job of showing us the amazing cultural legacy left by our European forebears. And at the end he reminds us that this is only a fraction of what was actually achieved. You will recognize many of these works. Others will not be so familiar. But they carry the weight of historical significance, and everyone with at least a four year college education should be aware of the general drift of Clark’s presentation. He finished this program for the BBC in 1969. It was an immediate success and you can also find the book of the same name which was a popular spinoff of the series. I recommend it also. The series came along in the midst of some of the most tumultuous scenes of civic strife of the last 50 years. Against this background, Clark laid out his thesis that Western civilization has consisted of a series of catastrophes and rebirths. He indicates that our depression over the events of the twentieth century should not lead us into abandoning the cultural legacy which has been bequeathed to us. For example, if the Black Plague of the 14th century were to strike us with the same force it did before, over a hundred million Americans would die. The Thirty Years war devastated parts of Europe even worse than World War 2. And yet, the will to survive and rebuild society was always there. It is a prescient reminder for the current generation of thoughtful people.

Yes, I said trilogy. This set includes the Disney classic The Lion King and its two sequels,The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride and The Lion King 1 1/2. All three are great films, which is surprising, due to Disney’s history with doing sequels.

The Lion King is the classic story of a young lion club named Simba who is next in line to become king of the Pride Lands. As he gets older, his uncle Scar begins to despise him and Mufasa, Simba’s father and Scar’s older brother. Mufasa is king, which makes Scar furious, and he makes a plot to kill them both. The plot is proven to be a success. Mufasa is killed and Simba, believing it to be his fault, runs off. He leaves the Pridelands and meets Timon and Pumbaa, a meekat and warthog who eats bugs. Simba soon joins the two and adopts their “Hakuna Matata”(it means no worries)lifestyle. Soon, Simba grows up and one day comes across his old friend Nala, who tells him that Scar is destroying their home. Simba at first disagrees about doing something about it, but after meeting with a old friend of his father named Rafiki, a wise mystic baboon, Simba gets back on track and decides to challenge Scar and become……The Lion King.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Lion King Movie Collection! Click Here

This movie is truly one of the best animated movies ever made. With some amazing voice-overs(including James Earl Jones, Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, Whoppi Goldberg, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas) and a engaging story, The Lion King is truly a classic to behold. Five Stars.

While probably the least interesting of the set, The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride is still one amazing sequel. The story revolves around Simba’s and Nala’s daughter named Kiara. Kiara one days ventures into the territory of the lioness named Zira. Zira is the wife of Scar and she wants revenge on Simba. Zira has a young lion club named Kovu and while Kiara is in Zira’s territory, she and Kovu get to know each other. Soon, the two parents show up and Simba takes Kiara home. At her home, Zira comes with a plan: she will train Kovu to kill Simba by getting to Kiara. Years later, they are now grown up and while Kiara is on her first hunt, a fire, set off by Zira’s other children, is burning the pridelands. Kiara barely makes to high ground and Kovu arrives just in time to save her. Simba sees him and Kovu tells him to give him a chance, while truly trying to kill him. Meanwhile, Rafiki is trying to get Kiara and Kovu together, beliving it could stop the feud between the two families. It proves to be a success as Kiara and Kovu fall for each other. Soon Simba tries to get to know Kovu better and finds out the truth about Kovu plans for Simba, which Kovu now doesn’t want to go through with, due to his feelings for Kiara. Kovu gets banished and Kiara runs off to find him. Zira now decides to take on Simba’s pride by force and kill Simba by herself. Now, Kovu and Kiara must stop this before the worst happens.

Better than most sequels, Simba’s Pride brings back all the characters from the original and introduces fascinating new characters. The story, while less interesting than the first, still works for this film and the voice-overs are good as well.

Four Stars.

The newest addition to the series is The Lion King 1 1/2. This is the first film’s story, told from Timon’s and Pumbaa’s point of view. The story begins with Timon and his life before he took on his Hakuna Matata lifestyle. He makes tunnels for a living, but always screws them up. While Timon’s mom beleves he just hasn’t found his place yet in the clan, Timon, along with his Uncle Max and the other meekats, believe he is just a klutz and he isn’t gonna get better anytime soon. Timon decides it’s time to find the home of his dreams and sets off with his mother’s permission. While on his quest, he meets Pumbaa and the two form a “aquaintship”, which soon becomes a friendship. They soon find their dream home and everything seems perfect until one day they find Simba and decide to raise him until that fateday when Nala arrived. When they hear Simba has gone back to the Pridelands to become king, Timon and Pumbaa must now help Simba regain his right to become the rightful king of the Pridelands.

This one is incredibly funny and also, very clever. The idea of seeing the story from Timon and Pumbaa’s point of view is delightful and the laughs are plenty. Overall, a new addition to the series that is fresh and fun. I give the Lion King 1 1/2 five stars.

I hope this review was helpful. I hope you enjoy this set of movies as much as I did.

This three movie, six disc collection is definitely worth the price paid. This collection contains Disney’s The Lion King, Lion King 1 ½ and Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride. The Lion King is a much beloved Disney classic. And while the Lion King 1 ½ and 2 are not nearly as good as the original - they are funny and enjoyable in their own right.

The special features, frankly, are not that good. There’s some games on them and some short montages on the characters. But mostly, I just watched the movies.

This movie begins with a phenomenal if misleading shot. It shows a top hat and cane belonging to former dancing legend Tony Hunter being auctioned, with no takers. Of course, if you see a top hat and cane, you think “Fred Astaire.” But despite the implication and reference, Fred Astaire was, at the time this film was being made, still very much the greatest dancer in the movies (with apologies to Gene Kelly). Unlike Tony Hunter, he had never ceased to make “A” pictures. But no one could have played this role with more authority than Astaire.

The plot is simple: washed-out and used-up former dance legend Tony Hunter is returning to Broadway in an attempt to revive his sagging career. That provides the pretext that is needed for a nearly perfect musical. THE BAND WAGON is a magnificent blend of great songs, great music, great dancer numbers, great actors, and great comedy. The cast is perfect. You get not only the greatest song and dance man in movie history but also a magnificent partner in the elegant and leggy Cyd Charise. You get great comic relief with Oscar Levant and Nanette Fabray. And you get one of the few musical comedy performers who could rival Fred Astaire for elegance and charm in Jack Buchanan.

The musical numbers are both marvelous and apparently never ending. The film begins with Fred performing “By Myself” and then soon shifts to a thoroughly rousing version of “Shine on My Shoes.” Later in the film, two enormously debonair song and dance men (Fred and Jack) perform “I Guess I’ll Have to Change My Plan’s.” And that doesn’t even come close to exhausting the list.

Perhaps the highpoint of the film, however, comes when Tony and Gabrielle, the ballet performer the producers want to partner him with, uncertain that they will be able to dance with each other at all, take a carriage ride through Central Park to try to get to know each other. As they drive, they come upon an outdoor dance floor, with an orchestra playing the haunting Dietz and Schwartz classic “Dancing in the Dark” (which lyricist Dietz intended to be a meditation about the nature of human existence; Schwartz’s music matched the mood of the lyrics perfectly). Tony and Gabrielle get out and begin to walk together in rhythm, gradually and tentatively attempting a few dance steps. Eventually, they discover each other’s rhythm, and they begin to dance together marvelously and magnificently, matching the mood of the music precisely. It is one of the greatest moments in either Astaire or Charisse’s career.

This is a must see film for any fan of the movie musical. I have to confess that I am not, by and large, a big fan of the MGM musical. I prefer the kookiness of the older RKO musicals, or even the stylized musicals of Warners or even Fox. MGM musicals were, to me, too often overproduced and dominated by the art directors. This film, however, is a magnificent exception.

I’m not prepared to be objective about “The Band Wagon.” To me it has the artistry of “An American in Paris” and the rollicking fun of “Singing in the Rain.” Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse have never danced better before or since and this backstage musical with plenty of tunes by Dietz and Schwartz gives them plenty of opportunity to strut their stuff. To me the “Dancing in the Dark” sequence is the most sublime dance number ever recorded on film.

“The Band Wagon” is not just a musical, but a musical about musicals. Fred Astaire plays a slightly down-and-out version of himself, “Tony Hunter,” who was “in all those singing and dancing pictures ten or twelve years ago, but the critics say he’s washed up.” Against his better judgment Tony gets teamed up with Cyd in an arty version of “Faust” that has disaster written all over it. But you know show people . . . and musicals . . .

This movie really gets a split response. Nobody hates it but for some it’s “just okay” and then there are the ones like me who LOOVE it. It’s my favorite musical and one of my favorite movies, period. I’m very glad Amazon is stocking it again. If you’re a fan of Astaire, director Vincente Minnelli, or the MGM films of the early fifties, I doubt you’ll be disappointed if you take a chance on “The Band Wagon.”

A couple months ago I saw TOKYO! at a film festival in San Francisco. One of the reasons I went to the screening was because of Michel Gondry, who directed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Be Kind Rewind. His piece was actually one of three short films that are in Tokyo! Each story takes place in the great city, but offers something different. The first, by Gondry, is about a young couple who are going in different directions. The second, by Carax, is about a sewer dweller who terrorizes the streets of Tokyo. And the thrid, by Joon-Ho, is about a OCD man who leaves his house for the first time in 10 years after falling for the pizza delivery girl.

I’m excited Tokyo! is coming to Blu ray because it now has a chance to reach a wider audience. I think this particular film will benefit from a High Defintion transfer because of the different locations and colors used throughout the film. My personal favorite story of the three was Gondry’s, but one of the great things about this film is that everyone has an opinion as to which one was the better story. Tokyo! is a visually appealing film that is worth checking out.

Really, not a bad movie. I didn’t have high hopes for this one, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Gail O’Grady and Robert Mailhouse star in this Christmas flick. O’Grady plays a widowed mother, who runs a soup kitchen in desperate need of a financial bailout. Low and behold, her son enters a contest call “All I Want for Christmas” and he wishes for her a husband. Of course, he wins and the toy company begins a nationwide search for a new hubby.

I’ll stop there, that gives the gist of the plot.

Entertaining, light fare that will pass a cold winter’s night.

There aren’t any special features on the dvd. The audio and picture quality are fine for this made for tv film

I recommend it. Enjoy.

True this is not the movie described above. But it is a cute christmas movie that was on the Hallmark channel last year.

Its about a boy who hears about a contest that would grant 1 child’s christmas wish. So he asks for a husband for his mom and wins. Making it a very interesting holiday season.
