The official announcement of the exact contents of this DVD set has just been made, with the set containing the Donald Duck cartoons of 1942-1946. These first official announcements occasionally have some mistakes or omissions, but they are generally accurate. In addition to the cartoons, the following extras were announced:

A chat with the current voice of Donald Duck.

The complete episode of the Disney TV Show “A Day In The Life Of Donald Duck”, first shown February 1, 1956. The cartoon Donald (and his car, at times) is placed in live-action settings to show his “typical work day”. One special scene has Donald arguing with his “voice” Clarence “Ducky” Nash, with Nash getting the last “quack”. Jimmy Dodd, Roy Williams, and the Mouseketeers also appear. A few of Donald’s cartoons are included.

A featurette on Donald Duck artists Carl Barks “The Art And Animation of Carl Barks”.

The 1940 Donald Duck public service short 1940 “The Volunteer Worker”. If this info is correct, I don’t know why this is repeated from the Walt Disney Treasures DVD set Chronological Donald Duck Volume 1.

A timeline of the Walt Disney Studios during the World War II years 1941-1945.

Donald-themed still frame art galleries.

The cartoons below noted with a “*” were also previously released on the Walt Disney Treasures DVD set On The Front Lines. Cartoons noted with a “+” should be in the set, but were probably mistakingly left off the official announcement list.

1942

1. The Village Smithy - Donald is a smithy who is continually frustrated in his work on a wagon wheel and trying to shoe a donkey.

2. Donald’s Snow Fight - When Donald destroys his nephews’ snowman, the snow fight escalates into Donald’s snow ship attacking the nephews’ snow fort. The nephews win the fight, with hilarious results. My favorite of the Donald/nephews conflict cartoons.

3. * Donald Gets Drafted - Donald eagerly obeys his army induction order, but soon suffers through a humiliating physical and a sadistic drill sergeant. I always got a laugh out of Donald reporting to an army induction in his sailor suit.

4. Donald’s Garden - Donald continually has gardening problems - first, with his watering can and water pump; and then with a gopher who eats his prize watermelons.

5. Donald’s Gold Mine - Donald’s conflicts with his donkey in his gold mine results in finding gold; but, in the end, Donald looks like one of his bars of gold.

6. * The Vanishing Private - Donald uses invisible paint to camouflage an anti-aircraft gun. His sergeant Pete angrily chases an invisible Donald. Pete finally loses his temper by throwing grenades where he thinks Donald is. Donald gets the last laugh when a general has Pete thrown into jail, with Donald as the guard.

7. * Sky Trooper - Donald continually bugs his sergeant Pete by saying he “wants to fly an airplane”. Pete tricks Donald into being a member of a parachuting team. When Donald refuses to jump and Pete tries to force him out of the plane, both Donald and Pete fall out without a parachute. As they fall, they dislodge a bomb, which destroys the general’s headquarters. Donald and Pete both end up doing KP peeling potatoes.

8. + Bellboy Donald - After Donald’s hotel manager gives him a lecture about Donald’s impoliteness to the guests, Donald is taunted continually by Junior, Senator Pete’s son. Donald controls his temper until the very end, when Donald ends up spanking Junior after Donald has lost his temper and his job.

1943

9. * Der Fuehrer’s Face - Donald has a nightmare that he is living in Nazi Germany, where everything (buildings, trees, clouds, etc.) is shaped like a swastika. He dreams of bayonet discipline, starvation, hard labor on a munitions assembly line, and having to “Heil Hitler” every minute of the day. He awakens to find himself glad to be a U.S. citizen. This is a very effective propaganda cartoon and is also an entertaining, funny cartoon. It is the only Donald Duck cartoon to win an Academy Award.

10. Donald’s Tire Trouble - While speeding through the countryside, Donald has a flat tire. Due to the wartime rubber shortage, Donald has several hilarious misadventures in trying to fit the flat.

11. Flying Jalopy - Donald buys a defective plane from Ben Buzzard, who makes Donald’s life insurance out to Ben and then proceeds to try to wreck the plane while Donald is flying it.

12. * Fall Out - Fall In - Donald suffers through the drudgery of the life of a soldier, including impossibly long marches through all types of weather. Donald wrestling with his tent while trying to pitch it is hilarious.

13. * The Old Army Game - His sergeant Pete catches Donald sneaking back into his barracks after curfew. Donald takes off, with Pete chasing him, with funny and interesting results.

14. * Home Defense - Donald, a civilian war aircraft spotter, falls asleep at his post. His nephews trick him by launching a toy plane and toy parachutists to make Donald think there is an enemy attack. Several funny scenes follow.

1944

15. Trombone Trouble - The gods Vulcan and Jupiter are kept awake by Pete’s awful trombone playing, so they give Donald the power to stop Pete. After Donald wins, he picks up the trombone and starts playing it himself. One of the funniest Donald/Pete conflict cartoons.

16. Donald Duck and the Gorilla - Donald and his nephews scare each other with a fake gorilla suit when the radio announces that a gorilla has escaped from the zoo. But a frantic chase begins when the real gorilla shows up.

17. Contrary Condor - Donald Duck, an egg collector, pretends to be a baby condor when the mother condor catches him trying to steal one of her eggs. Very funny scenes follow of Donald trying to get out of his predicament.

18. * Commando Duck - Donald is given a secret mission to wipe out a Japanese airbase. Unfortunately for Donald, he isn’t told how he is supposed to accomplish this alone. There are several very imaginative scenes that follow, resulting in Donald wiping out the airbase.

19. The Plastics Inventor - Donald bakes a plastic airplane from radio instructions and proudly goes out to try it. But several hilarious scenes follow as the plane melts in a rain storm.

20. Donald’s Off Day - Donald’s nephews and the weather continually frustrate his efforts to go golfing.

1945

21. The Clock Watcher - Donald works as a department store gift wrapper, but his job is threatened by his tardiness, laziness, playing with the merchandise, and the gifts just refusing to be wrapped.

22. The Eyes Have It - Donald mistreats Pluto by using hypnotism glasses to change Pluto into different animals. Pluto turns the tables on Donald and chases him when Pluto is changed into a lion.

23. Donald’s Crime - Donald, needing money for a date with Daisy, steals from his nephews’ piggy bank. After the date, his conscience makes him get an all-night dishwashing job to get the money to put back into the piggy bank. But Donald doesn’t get away with his theft - the nephews catch him putting the money back into the bank and thinks he’s stealing the money.

24. + Duck Pimples - A fun and imaginative cartoon in which characters in a murder mystery book come to life and Donald is accused of the crime.

25. No Sail - One of my favorite Donald/Goofy cartoons. They rent a sailboat that runs on nickels. After they run out of nickels, there are several frustrations for Donald due to Goofy being silly and clumsy.

26. Cured Duck - Daisy refuses to see Donald again until he is cured from his terrible temper. Donald uses an “insult” machine to cure himself. He returns to Daisy cured, but then has to deal with her temper.

27. Old Sequoia - Forest ranger Donald is fired after many misadventures in trying to prevent some beavers from destroying a sequoia tree.

1946

28. Donald’s Double Trouble - Daisy breaks up with Donald due to his numerous faults. Donald meets his “sophisticated” double and uses him to win back Daisy’s love. The trick backfires when the double falls in love with Daisy.

29. Wet Paint - Donald gets into a war with a bird that destroys Donald’s new car paint job and uphostery while gathering material for her nest. Donald gives up when he sees her nest full of her baby birds.

30. Dumb Bell of the Yukon - Artic trapper Donald gets the trouble he deserves when he takes a cub from a sleeping mother to make a fur coat for Daisy. Several funny scenes follow when the mother bear chases Donald.

31. Lighthouse Keeping - Donald, a lighthouse keeper, must deal with a pelican who is trying to douse the lighthouse light. As usual, Donald causes his own problems by first playing tricks on the bird.

32. Frank Duck Brings ‘Em Back Alive - Donald loses his sanity in trying to capture “wild man of the jungle” Goofy.

These cartoons are among Donald’s funniest and most imaginative. These Walt Disney Treasures sets of the Disney cartoons are among the best bargains of any DVD set. I own these cartoons since VHS tapes of the 1980s and the Disney Channel cartoon shows and still enjoy them after watching them for many years. I very much look forward to the DVD sound and picture quality that these Walt Disney Treasure sets have had.

The Disney treasures collection is the best and cheapest way of getting the entire series to their golden age shorts.

I must warn you not to buy any of these mini DVDS if you are someone who would love the full collection being the mini DVDS are just repeats or shorts due on future disney treasures.

Donald Duck has Stared in 162 colored shorts in total from 1934-1967. Below is a complete list of all his appearnces. it comes in 4 collumns: first the episode number, then the date, then the official clasification of the series it comes under, then the title.

All ones clasified as mickey mouse are seen in the both volumes of Mickey Mouse In Living Color which I would rather call Mickey, Donald, Pluto, Goofy & Friends being all Mickey’s shorts on his colored DVDS star at least one out of Donald, Pluto & Goofy who all have DVDS of their own in the treasures starring just them and not Mickey in their shorts when none of Mickey’s DVDS star him and not them meaning his colored DVDS are just origins to the real stars being Chosen because Donald, Pluto and Goofy star in all of Mickey’s shorts which were made before all them three started getting shorts of their own at the same time as they stopped producing regular Mickey Mouse shorts for good as though Mickey’s cartoons were just pilot shorts where they sussed out what characters are best that should be given their own regular series which all three of Mickey’s friends got at starring them selfs but not Mickey or anyone else originated from previous cartoons, but Mickey him self could not be a cartoon star due to his mean character not going with his lovely personality which made them limited on available stories to suit Mickey’s Character(READ MY MICKEY REVIEW TO LEARN MORE)

On Donald’s DVDS their is one short clasified as mickey not seen in mickeys collection being it does not star mickey which you will see in the list and understand better if you read my Mickey Colored Treasure Reviews, also the ones clasified as War are seen in the ON THE FRONT LINES Disney Treasure release. the episodes seen on the front lines DVD of Donald based on the war which are not clasified as war in the below list were still part of his regular series which is why they are repeated on his own general release even though already on the front lines, but the ones clasified as war in the below list are only seen on the front lines DVD because they were not part his regular series, they were commercials made for the war.

All The ones clasified as Donald and Goofy are in the donald duck collection.

Disney Treasures: Donald Duck Vol.1-2 feature all the cartoons in the list I said are included in the donald duck collection from 1934-46. which means 2 more volumes are due to complete the donald duck series.

Any other cartoons starring donald duck other than the below list were either theatrical movies, plus movies that were shorts combine when originally released which you can get on DVD now such as Mellody Time. Or TV series and Specials made in the modern age, but below is a complete list of all his original production golden age shorts.

I saw this movie at Cinema Village in NY and was so impressed by its raw, fly-on-the-wall approach. Being a New Yorker I knew nothing of the plight of these farmers in South Central LA and their attempts to take on greedy developers and city hall to save their community garden, but this story has universal appeal. An enthralling and necessary doc.

This documentary is masterfully directed and edited including some remarkable historical footage of New York City from the 60’s and 70’s. While the story revolves around one persecuted individual, Dhoruba bin Wahad, formerly Richard Moore, and one group, The Black Panthers, the story of persecution and the struggle for truth and freedom is compelling and universal. I remember learning about the Black Panthers in Junior High Social Studies class in the mid-1970s. Until I saw this film, I had no idea their early mission had as much to do with feeding and mentoring children as it garnered self-esteem and unity to take a stand against racism and police excesses. The inclusion of FBI sponsored operations to contain the civil rights movement is breathtaking. This very powerful film presents a very different viewpoint from the story presented in my 1970s textbooks. It is distressing to see how Richard Moore was framed and sent to prison for nearly two decades for a crime he didn’t commit. He is a compelling speaker. He tells of his persecution with poignancy all the while maintaining the powerful voice of a truthteller. The film never gets in the way of his very articulate voice. Rather, the film provides just the right amount of supporting materials to develop interest and understanding of the political and societal climate of that time. The editing is extremely sharp. The directing and production are exceptional. I highly recommend this film.

This documentary tells the story of Dhoruba bin Wahad, one of the lesser known but no less passionate political prisoners in the U.S.A. Following from his youth to politicization to incarceration and eventual freedom, Passin’ It On is a tale of Dhoruba’s triumph against all odds, and of those seeking to thwart him. While older, this film is extremely relevant to the issues at hand.

There is only one reason to buy this DVD, to baby-sit the kids. I give this release 4 stars because the cartoons are great and look excellent, but the DVD animation collector has already bought these in the DISNEY TREASURES COMPLETE GOOFY DVD TIN released years ago (which wasn’t complete). I had really wished the missing Goofy cartoons “Freewayphobia”, “Goofy’s Freeway Troubles”, “Soccarmania”, “Paracycling” & “Skating the Half Pipe” would have been a part of this, that would have completed the Goofy collection, but NOOOOOO!

If it weren’t for movies based on books today, many of us would never become acquainted with classic literature. Silas Marner is a gem of a movie, obviously based on a classic, and after seeing it, I understand why the book is required reading in many English classes. I myself have never read the book, and therefore appreciate becoming acquainted with it through this movie.

The setting appears to be in the 1600-1700s England. Silas Marner is wrongly accused of murder and is exiled from his community. When he arrives in another village, he becomes the mysterious weaver of fine cloth, who lives alone and rarely speaks to anyone. The squire from whom he rents his cottage meanwhile, is providing for his opium-addicted wife that he has secretly married. He keeps her and their baby daughter hidden from the public in a tiny apartment in the village. Struggling to the squire’s mansion one night to reveal her existence to his family, the woman dies in the snow, and Silas Marner finds the toddler in his cottage. Immediately he takes to her, and convinces people he should adopt her. The following part of the movie of his developing relationship with this adorable little acress is precious.

Marner lives frugally, raising the child, but when she is 16, the squire steps in, and Marner and his daughter must make a decision that will test their relationship. There is a subplot concerning the squire’s wayward brother whose actions affect all their lives, forcing all the characters to a turning point.

Ben Kingsley’s acting is excellent as he goes through the different periods of his life, and the movie does a fine job of portraying the era. The movie, like the book, may not be top-draw, but like the book, it also deserves classic status.

After reading George Eliot’s masterpiece, Silas Marner, I rented this video from my local library. I was presently surprised to see that the movie followed the basic pattern of the book. Though there were a few variances, for the most part Ben Kingsley did a masterful job of bringing Silas Marner to life. Kingsley’s portrayal of the old miser was stunning. However, the best acting came from the young lady who portrayed the heroin-addicted wife of Godfrey Cass. The love between Eppie and Silas was almost felt by the viewers. Kingsley is a most remarkable actor, and this is one movie that you should purchase for your own collection. END

Bava’s original version of LISA is one of the best lyrical euro-horror films ever. The presentation here looks just like the old ELITE laserdisc which also suffered from some slight digital artifacting…nothing awful, but it isn’t perfect. Everything about this move is great- the music, the style, just the general feel of it…it’s also completely unconventional. Of course, than there’s the re-edited HOUSE OF EXORCISM version which added new “exorcist” type scenes and rearranged the film to make it accessible to audiences in the mid-70’s. It’s bad, of course, but it’s great to have both versions together to see exactly how the film was damaged by the re-edit….this DVD in a way is the euro-trash fan’s version of the Criterion “Brazil” DVD! As far as extras go, the DVD unfortunately does not have 2 alternate scenes that were on the ELITE LD - one being an alternate extra gory scene of Silva Koscina’s death and the other an alternate erotic scene between Elke and Orano. The DVD does contain the extra ‘unfinished’ softcore sex scene, though, so why the other 2 scenes were left off is strange and disappointing. Other extras include the uncompleted L&TD trailer (also on the LD) plus 2 trailers for HOE. There’s a very minimal “photo/poster gallery” (lasts 23 seconds! ) and some minimal filmos and bios. The HOUSE OF EXORCISM has an audio track featuring Elke and producer Leone who explains how he butchered the film (although he doesn’t word it that way!). All in all, it’s a GREAT DVD from IMAGE - don’t pass this one up!

In the liner notes of Lisa And The Devil/The House Of Exorcism Alfredo Leone ask Mario Bava that if Mario had carte blanche (a blank check), what movie would he make? His answer was this movie, Lisa And The Devil, which is Bava’s most personal film.

Lisa (Elke Sommer) is a foreigner in a tourist group (it’s never explained what country she’s from, or what country they’re visiting). While admiring a fresco of the devil (which looks amazingly like Telly Savalas), she hears music and is drawn to it, abandoning the tourist group in the process. This leads her to a man(Telly Savalas) carrying a life-sized dummy. Lisa recognizes him as the devil from the painting and from this moment on the viewer is taken for a nightmarish journey that’s hard to tell which is actually real or a hallucination. Not that the end result is a mess, far from it; it is remarkable how Bava holds such a non-linear plot together so well where other filmakers before and since failed and it’s easy to see why this is Bava’s favorite film. The cast ensemble is excellent and so is the direction. It’s definitely one of his best.

Unfortunately Leone couldn’t find a distributor for this film. Seeing the success of The Exorcist, Leone had Bava reshoot some scenes that had Lisa “posessed” (spouting profanities, spewing pea soup, and so on). Bava balked at filming material he felt was blasphemous, so he walked and Leone finished filming the scenes, edited them into Lisa And The Devil, and called it The House Of Exorcism. The end result is really pathetic and an insult to Mario Bava’s movie. There is an audio commentary with Leone and Elke Sommer which is enjoyable and provides some of the information in making Lisa And The Devil but mostly tries to justify the filming of The House Of Exorcism. In my opinion he fails.

The DVD special features include beside the commentary, a Mario Bava biography, Bava’s and the cast filmographies, a theatrical trailer for Lisa and the Devil, two theatrical trailers for House Of Exorcism (whoopee), a deleted softcore sex scene between Silva Koscina and Gabriele Tinti, a photo and poster gallery, and liner notes by Bava scholar Tim Lucas. Too bad there wasn’t an audio commentary by Tim Lucas on Lisa And The Devil; his knowledge is incredible and he’s always interesting to listen to.

As bad as House Of Exocism is, I still recommend getting this DVD not only for comparison’s sake but for the Leone/Sommer commentary. Otherwise, get the Lisa And The Devil DVD which is available seperately.

In French the title of this movie is perhaps appropriate, but in English it is misleading. What is “forbidden” about the games that the children play has nothing to do with sex (the usual designation of “forbidden” in English). Instead what 11-year-old Michel Dolle (Georges Poujouly) and 5-year-old Paulette (Brigitte Fossey) do that is forbidden is they steal crosses, from the cemetery, from the top of a horse-drawn hearse–Michel even attempts to steal the rector’s crucifix. They do this as a way of coping with death. The crosses are for dead animals, her dog, some chicks, a worm, etc. that they have buried in a little plot under the mill near a stream.

But this is not a horror show or anything like it. Instead, René Clément’s celebrated tale of childhood love is actually a strongly religious anti-war movie of incredible delicacy, laced with humor and poignancy.

It begins with an air attack on a stream of people (presumably Parisians running from Paris) along a country road trying to escape the encroachment of the Nazi army. Little Paulette is in a car with her parents and her little dog, Jock. They are gunned down by a German fighter plane. Paulette’s parents and the dog are killed. Paulette is left alone carrying the dead dog in her arms. Eventually she wanders onto a farm where she is met by Michel who takes an instant liking to her and becomes her protector and her friend. His is a peasant family of farmers who really don’t need another mouth to feed, but they take her in. She is so clean, they exclaim and she smells so good. She is from Paris. She has just undergone the most horrible terror, the death of her parents and her dog, and now she must somehow come to grips with that loss. What transpires is a child’s interpretation of the healing power of religious ritual and symbol.

Clément uses the world of the children as a counterpoint to the war in the background and as a gentle satire on the church. The children make a game of religion and in doing so demonstrate the healing power of ritual and sacrament.

What makes this totally original and deeply symbolic film work is the uncluttered and naturalistic vision of Clément and his wonderful direction of his two little stars. Fossey in particular is amazing. She is completely unaffected and natural, an adorable little girl suddenly alone in the world who must make a new world for herself against great odds. Her sense of personal integrity and her strong will makes us believe that somehow she will succeed. Incidentally, Fossey’s performance here in conveying the creative world of the child should be compared with 4-year-old Victoire Thivisol’s performance in Jacques Doillon’s Ponette (1996), as should the skill and vision of the directors. Both are deeply religious films that rely on the pre-socialized world of the child to show us our own spirituality.

Also very good is Poujouly as the farm boy who loves little Paulette and shows that love by assuming the psychological and spiritual responsibility for helping her to overcome the tragedy of being so brutally orphaned. He is himself experiencing a pre-adolescent coming of age, a transition exemplified by rebellion and a growing independence of mind and spirit. Poujouly is intense and fully engaged, so much so that in one scene we can see him mouth in unison Paulette’s lines in preparation for his time to speak. Clément left this in perhaps because he knew it would further characterize Michel’s intensity.

This film won the Grand Prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1952 and an Academy Award the same year as best foreign film. It is one of the wonders of the French cinema, a masterpiece of the human spirit not to be missed. See it for the children, whose strength of character can inspire us all.

Forbidden Games deals with the reaction of a couple of children -Paullette, who losses both her parents as the consequence of an air attack, and Michel, the youngest of a peasant family in which Paullete finds refuge- in the context of the horrors of war, in this case, the second world war, in 1940.

The movie (unlike others dealing with children and war, like “Germany, Year Zero”) does not portray a miserable and deadly environment. Certainly, war is sensed all the time, and the danger of falling bombs is ever present. However, the movie is set in the seemingly peaceful countryside, not among ruins and combats. That doesn’t diminish the tragic context of the movie at all. Because we have witnessed what Paullette has gone through. And although Michel doesn’t seem to have had any kind of traumatic loss, he’s old enough to know what’s going on, and what Paullette is suffering. Maybe, this explains the way Michel wants to please Paullette, in her way to direct her pain. Their game of stealing crosses to complete a “big” animal cemetery could be seen as a morbid and macabre play by chlidren spoiled by the war, transformed into monsters. However, we never question the innocence that remains in the main characters as children that they are: what’s macabre is not what they do, it’s the war that they are witnessing. They just channel the influence of war and its implicit dead without malice.

Whether this topic is analized as the simplicity of an ill influenced child’s play, or through any psychological or mental connotations or meanings that could be applied, Forbidden Games is still, even today, a very original piece of cinema, that would hardly reach the same meaning if it’s filmed today, without the context and recent history that influenced it back in 1952. Anyway, nowadays, any director that would try to make a movie like this would find himself being very cautious, and I think he would end up doing something too tragic or too simplistic. René Clement did the right thing with the material that was handed to him, and the story and its meaning is so powerful and well executed that can still be enjoyed today. And what seems to be an open ending, is useful to reminds us that in war, for children there are no happy ending stories.

Unlike what one might think about a movie made in 1952 and with children as the lead actors, acting is flawless. I said that we never question the innocence of the children, and that is due in great part to the looks and great work of Briggitte Fossey and Georges Poujoly, whom give great credibility to that premise.

Criterion Collection has made available this magnificent movie on DVD for the first time. As usual, it’s a commendable work of restoration in many senses: in the sense of allowing more people -like me- to get to know this movie, and in the sense of giving it the best quality that the latest techniques allow.

The original French soundtrack is included, along with the english dubbed, both of them monophonic. Of course, english subtitles are included.

As Bonus materials we have alternate opening and ending, that would have given the movie a different context, less realistic, if you will. But I cannot help but think that they also could have given the story some more contrasting connotations. Also, there are interviews with the director alone and him with Briggitte Fossey (both from the 60’s) and an interview with the actress in 2.001.

Unlike some other Criterion releases, there is no additional track with an expert shedding some light on aspects that might be of interest, but a little printed essay is included in a booklet.

This movie doesn’t really fit in well with the other Ball-Hope movies; it’s much better. There is a lack of slap-stick comedy and a presence of realism that I found refreshing. If you are looking for a typical Hope movie, try “Fancy Pants,” but if you are looking for a great semi-dramatic movie, try this. Just try to remember that the characters are not Lucy Ricardo and the usual Bob Hope: they are the Ballentines. Highly Reccomended!

This movie is a must see for Lucy fans! If you enjoy “I Love Lucy”, then you’ll enjoy this movie. Lucille Ball is fantastic! I admire her very much. She is my idol. No other actress, or person for that matter, has left such a legacy. She shines in this movie. I don’t care what the professionals think. If you love Lucy as much as me, then you’ll love her in this movie. It reminded me in some ways of “I Love Lucy”, because in this movie Parker Ballentine(Bob Hope), doesn’t think that his wife, Angela(Lucille Ball)has enough talent to write a play, similar to the way that Ricky doesn’t think that Lucy has the talent to be in his shows. This movie is great for all the Lucy fans!

Like many people here, I detest the recut DVD version of this film. Seeing the original theatrical version in 1992 was one of the key moviegoing experiences of my life. I don’t buy DVDs to see a new spin on a movie I liked, I buy them to be able to rewatch that same movie. Alternate cuts are fine as a bonus feature, but once I saw how Michael Mann had butchered his mainstream masterpiece, giving no option of seeing how it was originally, I sold the DVD and bought a copy of the mercifully untouched widescreen VHS.

Recently, however, I discovered that while this American director’s cut DVD is from Fox, Warner Bros holds the rights to Mohicans outside the USA, and they have released the original theatrical version on DVD around the globe. I have a regionless DVD player, which is easy to get in many stores for under fifty dollars, so I bought a copy of the British DVD at amazon.co.uk

Wow. It’s as I remembered it, with the Clannad song, without the extra monologue over the closing scene, and with my favorite line back in — “My father warned me about people like you. He said do not try to understand them, and do not try to make them understand you.”

If you love this movie like I do, get a regionless DVD player, they’re worth it for so many reasons, and then get a copy of the British DVD. You’ll be glad you did.

Re-release of a previous review so those who read nearby reviews NOTE the difference between VHS (excellent) and DVD (POOR): Waited in great anticipation for the DVD release of this one. The Last of the Mohicans is a great movie enhanced with terrific music. The VHS widescreen version in THX is a wonderful piece of entertainment. Unfortunately, this Director’s Expanded Edition has destroyed the flow and continuity of the original. In Director Michael Mann’s attempt to supply us with his “definitive vision of the film” via his own editing, he has ignored the professional editors and provided us with a substandard version of what was a fine film. Several of the added clips have no musical sound track at all and come across as painfully awkward - making the viewer fully aware he/she is watching actors in front of a camera rather than immersing us in the action. There is even a series of scenes in the original (and VHS) that has a vocal music piece overlaid that has been completely omitted from the DVD. All in all, I was very disappointed in the DVD after having distinctive and memorable images etched in my mind from the original theater and VHS releases.

I just received my new season three set. I couldn’t believe what they did to this set. In place of the nice box set, they sent a snap case that is usually used for just one movie. All three discs are setting “ON TOP” of each other. Their is absolutely no partition. This is going to be extremely easy to scratch the discs. Now it would have been nice if they had sent these in slim-line cases, but these are ‘piled’ on top of each other. Cheap all the way! I also discovered that these discs do not play in my computer, (like every set I’ve ever purchased does). This set is going back tomorrow. Sony really did a number on their customers.
