I’m not certain why this movie is so low-rated. Is it a movie in the same manner as “Sense and Sensibility” and “Pride and Prejudice”? No. Is it a good movie? Yes.

The movie follows young Catherine Morland, an addict of early gothic novels, with a vivid imagination. When the kindly, wealthy, childless Allens take her on a trip with them to Bath, Catherine is overjoyed. She soon befriends gushing Isabella Thorpe and her vulgar brother John, who appear to be fortune-hunters. Catherine also befriends the kindly, wealthy Tilney brother and sister, Eleanor and Henry. There is also a brother, Frederick (who is VERY interested in the newly-engaged Isabella) and their eerie, falsely-enthusiastic father General Tilney.

Eleanor invites Catherine to their eerie family estate, Northanger Abbey. In the mysterious castlelike building, with a death harkening back many years, Catherine’s imagination soon disrupts reality, and her slowly growing affection for Henry.

I must contradict the people who said that you need to read the book to understand the movie: I haven’t, and I did. This movie contains the staples often found in a Jane Austen story: witty repartee, a flurry of manners and morals, dancing and dresses, creeps and nice people, and a chastely tense romance wherein at least one of the people involved must learn a lesson. While in “Pride” it was learning about pride and prejudice, and in “Emma” it was meddling; in this particular movie, it is learning about distinguishing reality from fantasy.

Katherine Schlesinger is perfect as Catherine Morland, smaller and wider-eyed than the usual blonde girls in this film. Peter Firth is sexy and sweet as Henry Tilney, who occasionally launches into monologues that both insult and compliment (”She is a disgrace to her sex… and it is a quality I will be sad to see her lose”) and Ingrid Lacey is delightful as the haunted Eleanor Tilney. Cassie Stuart is good as gushy fortune-hunter Isabella Thorpe, whose constant effusion hides a mercenary little excuse for a soul; Jonathan Coy is also good, in his relatively brief role, as the rotten John Thorpe.

This movie is filmed in a slightly different manner than most Jane Austen films. Reality is interspersed with Gothic fantasies and nightmares of Catherine’s; however, this will be entertaining if you have even a passing knowledge of books like the “Mysteries of Udolpho.” The soundtrack is relentlessly, over-the-top Gothic in a way that is downright funny. We also get to see more of Bath than in movies like “Persuasion”–I thought those gardens were extremely pretty. The movie is shot in a misty sort of way, with looming decaying buildings and white-clad heroines–it seems to be half spoof, half serious story. And as Jane Austen was a master of satire, I imagine she’d be highly amused.

I’m a little surprised that the travesty of Mansfield Park is rated higher than this (watch the BBC version, where they care about the original story) as this is a darn good movie. It’s not exactly like Emma, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility; however, it’s still very good.

Though below the standard of any other Austen film I’ve seen (I haven’t yet seen Persuasion) in terms of quality and acting, this film version of Northanger Abbey is strangely satisfying - or perhaps I should say - not completely dissatisfying. After hearing so many terrible things said of the music and dream sequences I was expecting something far worse - something entirely laughable. What I’ve found is that with such low expectations the film did alright.

Before one watches or reads Northanger Abbey it is almost vital that one reads Anne Radcliffe’s masterpiece, The Mysteries of Udolpho. The reason for this is that NA is consistently referring to the book and is often a direct parody. What was obvious from this film, is that the filmakers had never read Udolpho and didn’t understand Austen’s jokes. What made it quite clear that Udolpho had not been read were the strange fantasy sequences, as they did not have anything to do with the book or Radcliffe’s style at all. What is portrayed in the film is far more graphic and horrific than the book Catherine makes reference to. As a result, the fantasy sequences are over the top and even make Catherine seem a bit mashochistic, which is completely different from Austen’s intent. If you haven’t read Udolpho, you shouldn’t notice these issues at all, however if you have, the filmmaker’s approach will seem rather bizarre.

Aside from that, one of my main complaintd is that the music does not fit the film whatsoever and did at times become a distraction. The chanting celtic sounding voice may have sounded better without the synthesizers and St. Elmo’s Fire saxophone playing with it. The rock guitar that occasionally flared up was much easier to stomach than the lusty saxophone that played at the most unusual times. On top of this, there were some unnecessary changes made to explain the character of Major Tilney and further create the Gothic suspicions that Catherine harbors. I thought this actually lent her actions more credence instead of making them more ridiculous (and hilariously stupid) as they are in the book. The filmaker’s need to validate Catherine in this way really removed hilarity from many of the greatest scenes. It was strange to see the BBC and A&E of all people, do this to a piece of literature. However, the changes were not so strong as to entirely change the story.

Casting also plays a key role in the quality of this film. Isabella is twice as annoying, maybe thrice, as in the book. The actress who plays her smiles in such a large and ghastly way that her attractiveness to men is entirely unbelievable. Her brother, Catherine’s unwelcome courter, is better cast, however the scriptwriters portray him as more of a scary abuser than an awkward baffoon as he is supposed to be. Mr. Tilney, our hero, is at times perfect in his role, and then awkward, but in the most important moments, pulls off his character perfectly. Northanger Abbey itself is an historical inaccuracy, as they use a castle - and assume we don’t know what an Abbey is. Major Tilney is perfect, and one of the better actors in the film. However, it is Catherine herself that made the film worth watching for me. She was the embodiment of everything Austen described her to be and I can’t imagine another actress in the role who could have done better. She had the awkwardness of Catherine, yet at times could be unbelievably beautiful, and at all times maintained the innocence you would expect her to have. I would very much like to see a remake with this same girl in the role, however, I’m sure she’s much older now.

Oh, and one more thing, this may be the only film in which the filmmaker’s were ever allowed to use the actual waters at bath built originally by the Romans. It is remarkable to see how they were used. Men and women actually climbed into the waters fully clothed, hats and all, and stood around and talked. In this film, the showed the actors with some sort of floating plate tied around their necks. It looked like the plate was covered with flowers or something that was possibly an aromatherapy type treatment. Very interesting for history buffs and likely never to be done again.

In summary, this film is worth watching if you are a true Austen fan. However, if you aren’t, the whole thing may come off as some strange Saturday afternoon made for tv movie gone wrong. If you aren’t familiar with Jane Austen or films of her books, don’t start with this one. However, if you are getting to the bottom of the pile for Austen things to read or watch, this is worth the effort.

This is by no means a frightening movie. Instead, it is an entertaining adventure story in which the villain happens to be a werewolf and the hero is a kid with a severe handicap. He may not have the use of his legs but he does have bravery, a sister that takes him seriously and an uncle who is too much fun to be a really good role model.

When a town his plagued with sudden a violent murders tensions grow high and neighbors become suspicious of one another. At first no one takes the idea of a werewolf seriously but the bodies continue to pile up. Eventually a young boy confinded to a wheelchair sees the wolf firsthand an escapes on the zouped up wheelchair his uncle built for him. His sister knows that he is a royal pain in the backside but she also knows his character and believes him. She discovers the identity of the lycanthropist. Unfortunately, the wolf also learns theirs. The stage is set for a confrontation.

One of the things I like about this movie is that it depicts young people able to act well and make good decisions in spite of the attitude of the adults. It does not depict young people only as selfish idiots seeking only their own gratification. Here it is the youngsters that save the day with the help of an uncle with childing tendencies.

It’s a fun movie, not at all serious, just fun.

You don’t normally expect to find well-crafted characters in horror movies, which is why SILVER BULLET can catch a first-time viewer by surprise. There are suspenseful scenes aplenty, but it really is the characters and their relationships that make this movie stand out. Corey Haim is Marty, eleven years old and reliant on a motorized wheelchair to get around. Megan Follows is his fifteen year old sister Jane, jealous of the special attention her brother gets because of his disability. Their parents are Bob and Nan, and Nan’s brother is played by Gary Busey. Uncle Red is the sort of relative that families are not proud of and would probably rather not associate with at all; it’s unfortunate for Nan then that Red loves his nephew Marty so much.

Marty is just getting old enough to realise that Red isn’t exactly an exemplary human being. Early in the film a friend of Marty’s scares Jane with a snake, causing her to fall flat in a puddle of muddy water and ruin the outfit she’s been showing off. It’s the sort of prank that a brother would pull on a sister and then immediately regret it, and Marty’s face shows the regret not only at that moment, but later at night when he gives Jane money to help make up for it even though it wasn’t his fault. At that point she apologises for verbally wounding Marty in retaliation by telling him that Uncle Red, his idol, is a useless drunk.

Because Marty gets preferential treatment from everyone, Jane always feels like she gets no attention, and that carries over to some of the reviews on this site that mention she’s a minor character. The importance of her character (especially as the emotional center of the film) is too easily overlooked. When Marty confesses his nighttime encounter with a werewolf to her, she believes him enough to help look for evidence the next day, and her experience leaves her utterly convinced that Marty’s story is the truth. At that point the familial relationship between brother and sister (and eventually Uncle Red) begins to strengthen until it reaches its peak at the film’s very end with a heartfelt and touching (and not at all saccharine) piece of narration. The movie is narrated by Tovah Feldshuh as a grown-up Jane, and it takes place in the summer of 1976 (just ignore those anachronistic Diet Coke cans in the garage). It’s a combination of the beautifully-done narration, the unusually romantic score and the genuinely good acting and interaction between the leads (Haim, Everett McGill as the town’s concerned Reverend Lowe, and especially Follows and Busey) that gives the movie an almost lyrical sweetness that not only is unexpected from a low-budget horror movie but also quite simply *works*.

This DVD edition is quite nice in the area of picture quality. Anamorphic widescreen at about 2.35:1, good contrast and sharpness, nothing distracting like severe edge enhancement or anything. A very pleasing image. Sound is good too… but the disc falls flat in the area of extras. Basically, there aren’t ANY. One wishes they could have included the commentary that comes with the R2 edition (I believe). But this movie is good enough to still warrant a spot in your collection even without the extras.

Why does Sony keep ruining Christmas classics like this and now Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town with a stupid Mariah Carey video. When is this dumb so-called trend going to stop. Leave the Christmas classics(Rudolf,Frosty,Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town)as is.Please, NO MORE EXTRA SONGS & VIDEOS…these are not good extras they are just pure crap!!!

The DVD transfer is pretty good but the scene with Yukon discovering peppermint has been cut.

The movie primarily takes a look at two Holllwood stunt woman: Jeannie Epper, who doubled for Lynda Carter during the Wonder Woman series run, has been working in the business for approx 30yrs and comes from a whole family of professional stunt men and women; and Zoe Bell, a New Zealand native & young up and comer who doubled for Xena during that shows six seasons who is now looking to make her mark here in L.A./Hollywood.

We get the background of each woman, a look at the difficulties that women face in the business, a lot of celebrity interviews, and some additional celebrity cameos that the filmakers shot while making the film.

What I particularly enjoyed was the immediate bond between Epper and Bell. Epper seems to take Bell under her wing rather quickly by helping with valuable training and allowing her to stay at her home while she struggles to get work and make her own name in the stunt woman profession. It’s a nice inside look that goes to show not everyone in “the business” is just out for themselves. Epper comes across with genuine eagerness, kindness, and integrity as she guides Bell through the Hollywood machine.

If the plot line so far interests you, or your a fan of shows like Wonder Woman and Xena, then this documentary should not disappoint.

This movie explores the lives of 2 incredible stuntwomen: Jeannie Epper (Wonder Woman, et. al.) and Zoe Bell (Xena). It provides an interesting look at the newcomer, Zoe, and her struggles in finding her way into this predominantly male profession. The profile of the legendary Jeannie Epper was very intriguing to me. At 60+ years of age, Jeannie is still going strong and still pursuing work. Amanda Micheli has done an incredible job putting this film together.

The DVD also contains some great interview footage with Lynda Carter and Lucy Lawless. The only disappointing aspect is the fact that more of Jeannie’s Wonder Woman footage was not included. As I understand it, Micheli wanted more footage, but Warner Brothers was not cooperative. Who knows why???!!!

I also had the privilege of seeing this film in the theatre, along with a live Q & A sessions with Lynda Carter, Jeannie Epper, and Amanda Micheli. What a thrill. It was so great to hear Lynda and Jeannie recount their days on the Wonder Woman set and give praise to each other for their respective performances. Amanda also gave great insight into the making of the film and what her vision had been for the project. She is a super lady herself and presents a terrific documentary that you will want to check out.

From the first moment I AM SAM began, I realized I was in for a rare movie treat. As part of a movie class I was fortunate to recently preview I AM SAM and find now, several weeks later that I am still as enthusiastic about this film as I was when I first saw it.

Sean Penn, and I cannot say enough about his performance, plays Sam, a mentally challenged adult with the mental capacity of a 7 year old. We first see him working at Starbucks while he puts out sugar packets in an obsessive manner, calling out orders over and over and endearing himself to customers in his charming Sam manner. Suddenly, Sam is called away and we watch him enter a hospital and witness the birth of his daughter. Elated and awestruck, Sam names the baby girl Lucy, after the Beatle song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Unfortunately Lucy’s mother isn’t intersted in either Sam or Lucy and as they leave the hospital, with Lucy in Sam’s arms, simply runs away from them. Ill prepared and ill equipped to raise a child, Sam somehow managaes to bring up Lucy with the help of a kindly and eccentric neighbor played to perfection by Dianne Weist. As the years go by, we see glimpses of Lucy growing up as she plays with Sam, as they read Green Eggs and Ham together before bedtime, as Sam buys shoes with Lucy aided by his friends who are also mentally challenged and finally when Lucy begins school. And while I know realistically that Sam being capable of raising Lucy mostly on his own till she reaches grade school might be unlikely, Sean Penn as Sam is so loving and good with Lucy, that I truly wanted to believe this could happen.

While it isn’t firmly established how Sam and Lucy manage to evade child welfare agencies all of this time, eventually these beauracratic agencies do become aware of Lucy’s situation and challenge Sam’s ability to care for her. Sam now must fight for Lucy as he never has had to do before. Confused and heartbroken, Sam initially finds a high powered lawyer played by Michelle Pfeiffer. But she wants no part of the case. Beset by a career which takes over her life, Michelle Pfeiffer’s character has a sullen young son at home and little to say to her husband. Eventually, though, she does take the case, is almost shamed into it by other lawyers in her firm. But in a remarkable twist of fate and and while helping Sam, she learns a great deal from him about parenting and unconditional love. What happens to Sam and Lucy as they are separated and the case is argued in court are memorable scenes filled with tremendous poignancy and deep emotions. For after all, who is truly fit to be a parent. Is love enough? Who does make a good parent? And most of all, what is in the best interest of Sam’s daughter, Lucy

As an addition and complementing the tremendous perfomances of Sean Penn, Michelle Pfeiffer,Dianne Weist and Laura Dern Lucy played by Dakota Fanning, the movie inclues as background music many of the songs of the Beatles. And at various times the screenplay includes relevant lines and quotes which are fitting to the scenes. It was particualrly eerie watching this movie a few days after the death of George Harrison to hear Sam talk about the success of Harrison’s song, “Here Comes the Sun,” from the Abbey Road album. But what an appropriate comment I thought as the sun shined down on both Lucy and Sam as Sam ran around the soccer field with Lucy in his arms.

I cannot praise this movie enough. While at times one couldn’t help but think of the movies Rainman and Kramer vs. Kramer, I AM SAM stands on its own as being a truly wonderful movie. I fully expect that Sean Penn will be nominated for many awards for his magnificent performance. I certainly hope he is acknowledged for this, a performance of a lifetime. If not I am confident that viewers like myself will never forget Sean Penn as Sam or this finely drawn character.

This video is not a sugary “warm-fuzzy”. Instead, it deals with the reality of life, which is sometimes harsh. Life is not perfect, yet there is strength to be found in the perfect love of Jesus. I recommend it to parents who want their children to appreciate the true reason for CHRISTmas.

This is a FINE example of what Christmas is ALL ABOUT and not being too preachy. This is the story about Aaron, the Little Drummer Boy, who hates all people because his family was murdered by a group of Desert Thieves. Aaron is kidnapped by Ben Harmed, the greedy and crooked, self proclaimed “Kin of the Desert Showmen”. (played superbly by Hosse’ Ferrer) and his bubling assistant, Ollie. The story is told by Greer Garason, with a great air of dignanty. I cry every time I watch this story and there is good reason why (not tears of sadness, but tears of joy over the words of the African King about the Christ Child, because he is SO right!) This story was created by the GREAT Romeo Muller, who is the FINEST children’s writer who EVER lived! You can’t go wrong with a story writen by Romeo Muller. This one, in fact was his most favorite story that he ever wrote for Rankin/Bass Productions (his most favorite he EVER wrote was NOEL, which is also on video.) But I would HIGHLY recomend this film to anyone and everyone. It’s VERY enjoyable and you and your family will love it.

There is a reason why the original DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (1951) is a classic and the remake (2008) is not. The FX of 1951 were minimal, but the emphasis on plot, acting, allegory, and scripting combined (as they so rarely do) to produce a film that is watchable even after many viewings. Where Keanu Reeves sleepwalks through his role as Klaatu, Michael Rennie invests his with a riveting performance as a pseudo-human who slowly and naturally learns what it means to be human. Hugh Marlowe in the original is totally believable as the weasly love interest for Patricia Neal. Marlowe’s sliminess paired off well with Rennie’s saintliness. In the remake, there is no one, except perhaps in a collective sense, who can distract the audience long enough to see Reeves as anything more than a mobile pained automaton who is only slightly more interesting than Gort.

Rennie causes the earth to stand still in a manner that emhasizes his godlike powers. His assumed name of Carpenter further allies himself as one who must suffer, die, and be reborn himself so as to save humanity from itself. Reeves arrives on earth determined to exterminate human life as a prerequisite for maintaining it in its supposed pristine state. His argument that John Cleese artfully exposes that Klaatu’s own race avoided self-immolation only after arriving at a precipitous tipping point is exposed as a sophomoric inability to connect one moral thread of one race to a similar thread of another.

In the original, director Robert Wise uses deliberately blurred camera angles to present Rennie as one whose true nature can be only slowly revealed. Recall Rennie’s introduction when he arrives at the boarding house to seek a room. Compare that masterly hiding of face and form with Scott Derrickson’s inability or unwillingness to show Reeves’ face as no more than a perpetual scowl. Kathy Bates as the Secretary of State manages to invest her role with the film’s only note of authenticity as she correctly notes the inevitable results that occur when a technologically advanced culture collides with a significantly less advanced one.

Unless the audience manages to care about the lead (it does with Rennie but not with Reeves), then the director has no place to go but with FX. And for the umpteenth time, the revised version of TDTESS proves that the lack of acting and scripting cannot elevate a film to the point that FX can salvage.

I’ve been beaten to the punch by a lot of really fine, insightful reviews. I’ll only add that, like so many movies we seem to see today, this is one that could have been so much better.

It is poorly paced, and miserably directed, with such an imbalance of emphasis between Klaatu’s heavy-hearted, planet-wide mission, and the irritating, recurrent focus on the “cute kid” character (Jaden Smith) who becomes as welcome in the story as an insect at a picnic.

Jennifer Connelly is wholly unbelievable as a “world class” super-scientist, but at least the director resisted the temptation to create some smarmy love-affair concoction between she and Klaatu. Given how uninteresting the rest of the story was, I was afraid that he might resort to such a technique to breathe life into this otherwise prosaic rendering of the original science fiction classic.

The special effects… well, yes, they were good. It’s 2009. The special effects always ought to be good. But as we’ve all known for a long time, good special effects do not necessarily make a good movie.

Other than the explanation of where he (Blade) came from, who he and everyone else is, at the beginning, this film stands nicely on its own. for those of you that know the first one, then this opening explanation will be a little irritating (and a tad confusing, but it becomes clear later). The opening does smell strongly of franchise potential, being repeated in all the inevitable sequels still to come. Once past this though, we are lead through a massive fight and action scene that sets up the whole movie. and warns anyone who can’t stand Hong Kong action scenes that they are probably watching the wrong screen.

The movie is essentially a platform for Snipes to have fun with his most renowned character. And he does so with very entertaining results. The movie has reasonably well rounded characters, suspicion piled on top of everyone, some amazing set pieces and a good sense of humour. The impact of all the blood and guts is reduced by the obvious fantasy of the fights (wires and SFX a lot of the time), but its still pretty powerful.

The lead performances are all very good, although some of the peripheral characters are a little too hammer horror. Luke Goss demonstrates great potential, although you would need to see him without the make up, body doubles, and special effects to really judge. and there is occasionally that urge to shout “when will I be famous.” and the pure blood female vampire who takes a shine to blade is well worth being bitten by.

Overall it feels less like a sequel and more like a stand alone movie. with this in mind, I think its in fact better than the original (a rare example of the exception that proves the rule).

Blade 2 was diffenetly a movie that shot down the theory that sequels are worse then the first movie. Again Snipes went above and beyond during the fight scenes in this movie. It was interesting to see how the directors were able to establish moves from the wwf(or now, the wwe, and bring those moves into blade. I thought the bad guys in this movie were the best, and my hat comes off to the make-up artists. All in all, Blade 2 was a great movie, with awesome action scenes, tight bad guys, and a good plot.

Quite simply one of the greatest war movies ever made. A top notch thriller loaded with action, espionage and double crosses, “Where Eagles Dare” is the kind of movie that Hollywood just doesn’t make anymore. This isn’t some politically correct drama steeped in reality. No, this is good guys vs. bad guys. This is pure unabashed fantasy which keeps the audience on the edge of its seat. This is just darn good entertainment!

Richard Burton is absolutely cunning as the British agent who leads an elite group of soldiers behind enemy lines and into a seemingly unpenetrable German castle to rescue an imprisoned American General. A young Clint Eastwood is the only American on the mission. Clint is his usual cool and calm self. However he, like the audience, isn’t sure who to trust. Somebody’s a double agent, but exactly who is anyone’s guess. Don’t worry about figuring it out, just sit back and enjoy the drama. You’ll love the growing tension and suspicion between Burton and Eastwood.

The journey into the castle is classic heart-stopping drama. Even better is Burton’s fight with a German soldier high atop a ski lift — truly one of the most riveting action sequences ever filmed. Bullets are flyin’ and bombs are blastin’ throughout. In the end, heroes emerge while evil perpetrators get their just due. Classic, absolutely classic!

And yes, as several reviewers have noted, the stunning scenery and beautiful cinematography in this film would greatly benefit from a widescreen DVD treatment. So, how ’bout it, I want my DVD!

This movie, filled with drama, action, and a complex plot that will make your head spin, has it all. Richard Burton is dashing as the cold plotting secret agent who is leading his team on a mission to save D-Day from disaster. Clint Eastwood, here little more than a teenager, is wonderful as the somewhat befuddled American army ranger who cannot figure out why he is even on the mission.

Any attempt to go into detail about the story would ruin some of the fun. Suffice to say that you will be riveted both by the action and the performances. One note though, Burton’s monologue is amazing.

If you like WWII movies and have not seen this one, you don’t know what you are missing.

I actually passed on seeing “Sliding Doors” several years ago because of a review I read by Roger Ebert. I knew about the basic premise of the film, which is that a character played by Gwyneth Paltrow gets on a subway train and does not get on a subway train. The film goes back and forth between the two plotlines, basically playing out both sides of Robert Frost’s two paths diverging in the woods. Ebert’s complaint was that taken independently neither of the plotlines was worth watching, which was enough to convince me to see something else.

Well, now I have seen “Sliding Doors” and while I agree with Ebert’s critique, I want to argue that what is interesting about this film is not the two plotlines but the way they interact. Think of it as two wrongs making a right or the total effect being greater than the sum of the two parts or whatever makes sense to you. Writer-director Peter Howitt makes “Sliding Doors” into more than just a gimmick film. It is not in the class of “Groundhog Day” or “Memento,” but it is certainly on a level with “50 First Dates.”

Paltrow plays Helen Quilley. One morning she goes off to work, leaving behind her lover, Gerry (John Lynch). As soon as she gets to work she is sacked. On the way home she both catches and misses the subway in a sequences that is rather clumsily staged, but you get the idea. The Helen on the subway gets home in time to catch Gerry in bed with his supposedly ex-lover, Lydia (Jeanne Tripplehorn). The Helen who misses the subway gets hurt when her purse is stolen and gets home after Lydia has left and therefore knows nothing about the affair.

Because of the near mugging Howitt is able to have one Helen look different from the other because of a bandage on her head after the hospital visit. By the time that heals the other Helen, trying to put Gerry behind her, has shortened her hair and bleached in blonde. The other key distinction is that while one Helen is still with Gerry, working two jobs in order to support him while he (does not) write a novel (and does continue to see Lydia), the other is seeing James (John Hannah), a nice man she met on the subway home and who believes the Monty Python line “Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition” helps to put life in perspective (which is certainly true).

It seems fairly obvious that both Helens should be with James and leave Gerry far behind, but it seems clear that Howitt is going to work the irony angles as much as possible in this film. It is not so much that these are parallel stories as their are recurring elements of symmetry and at some point I decided that what was going to happen here was that Howitt was going to be able to have his cake and eat it two. This indeed turns out to be the case, but telling you that does not give away the end game.

Paltrow is fine in the main role, although why the two main female characters had to be played by American actresses is beyond me. Tripplehorn’s character is in the “Fatal Attraction” mold, which makes Gerry’s inability to choose between Helen and Lydia rather laughable, a fact repeatedly pointed out to him by his friend, Russell (Douglas McFerran) at the bar. Russell has the best lines in the film, calling Gerry “a morality-free zone” and pointing out that his advice will be unappreciated since it is based in reality. Lynch manages to play Gerry so that there is some hope of redemption and we remain open to the idea that things could work out between him and Helen, while we wait for Helen to catch up with our feelings for Hannah’s character, who is likeable in a rather surprisingly unpretentious way for such a gabby guy.

This is not a brilliant and creative film, but Howitt constructs what I think is a smart story line bouncing back and forth between the lives of the two Helens. There is no profound point to be made in the end beyond the ancient idea that when it comes to the lives of human beings and their attempts to find love in the world the gods tend to look down and laugh. But in a world where so many films are exercises in stupidity and I find myself thinking that what ended up on screen was a first draft that needed some serious work, “Sliding Doors” has all the pieces fit. The other film I have seen by Howitt, “Antitrust,” was also smartly crafted, although in that one somebody else wrote the script. Still, that is not a bad pair of films for viewers who like to have their brains engaged.

What can say ? I’ve seen this extremely funny and intelligently romantic movie about a dozen times after seeing it in the theater (and that’s for lack of time) and I’m still not bored with it. I’ve shown it to people of all ages and both sexes and they all loved it. The “What if she had caught the rain?” becoming reality principle is not plausible of course but the rest of the movie is extremelly realistic.

Gwyneth is absolutely perfect, John Hannah delivers more one-liners than you could think of and yet never sounds contrived, his total lovability and his accent turn him into this so obvious babe. Jeanne Tripplehorn is cast in this very unrewarding role, yet -in one very memorable monologue especially- she manages to give it more than one “evil” dimension. In fact, all supporting roles are extremelly well-crafted and allow the movie never to see its pace slow down.

I should add that the first time I saw it I was wondering how the story would fall back on its feet in the end and I was so pleased to see how they had dealt with it. Thumbs up ! and thank you for this little gem.
