The New Adventures of He-Man is a series that has unfortunately been badmouthed a fair bit over the years, usually by people who watched one episode, decided it was too different, and branded it ‘awful’. This has put the series at somewhat of a disadvantage over time, with people judging it without even watching it(and I note this has spread to amazon with two people reviewing this set before it was even released). Admittedly the character desgins are very different to the filmation versions, but if you can get past the characters differences and focus on the storytelling you should be able to appreciate this as an exciting continuation of the lives of He-Man and Skeletor.

He-Man himself is the same character, voiced by the ever excellent Gary Chalk. Skeletor is quite different to the old version, more of a comedian here, he is no longer the bumbling oaf seen towards the end of the old series. He actually manages to defeat He-Man and drive him into exile in a multi part storyline, as well as gaining some other victories(and a new costume). He’s comparable to Mark Hamill’s Joker from Batman: The Animated Series, and is a very well developed villain who usually steals the show when on screen.

While the old series is a classic, it was weak in many areas. Characters were often toned down and a childish tone taken, while moral messages took over the episodes, not to mention the overuse of stock footage animation and almost total lack of continuity. The New Adventures maintained a strong continuity, with multi part storylines with more depth than seen before. The animated is of a superior quality, while more anime influenced.

There are an abundance of extras as with all the BCI sets, this one featuring a documentary where the writers talk about the creation of the series, and a documentary talking about the various comics of the He-Man franchise. Overall a great set, if you come to this series with an open mind, you’ll find it a good continuation of the He-Man series with a different spin and some nice throwbacks to the classic series every so often.

In the grand scheme of things, The New Adventures of He-Man is perhaps the most underrated, most misunderstood, least popular, and heavily criticized of all of the incarnations of our favorite blonde haired swordsman. BCI, in attempt to release a DVD compilation of He-Man of simply unprecedented thoroughness has not allowed the lack of hype surrounding The New Adventures to stand in the way of bringing the entire season (65 episodes) to the home market. I must confess that I somehow managed to completely overlook this show in it’s original syndication broadcast (1989-1990) and didn’t even realize it had existed until the DVD sets were released. Volume One consists of the first 33 episodes of the massive 65 episode season spread out across 6 discs. My mission was to delve into the series, a newcomer with no premeditated expectations to hold me back, and to determine where the New Adventures of He-Man stacks up in the animated Masters of the Universe universe.

The first five episodes of the show were its unofficial pilot and bear some physical differences from the remaining episodes that followed. Most noteworthy of these changes include a completely revamped Skeletor (which was definitely a wise move considering he looked doughy and rather silly initially) and the addition of a pony tail to He-Man’s new much shorter hair do. Aside from such nuances, the core of the program and all of its characters transition smoothly from the pilot into the actual series.

That said, is the program worthy of the abuse it often receives from die-hard fans of the Filmation original? Absolutely not. In fact, The New Adventures actually contains some of the richest plot developments and most intelligent scripting of any of the three incarnations of He-Man (not counting the live-actor feature film of course). The trouble, I suspect, arises when fans of the original stumble upon the New Adventures and immediately notice that aside from the name, there is nearly no connection to the fantasy-driven roots of the original to be found. Having come into this set directly after viewing (and reviewing) the entire Filmation He-Man & She-Ra shows, indeed this transition takes some getting used to. The program looks completely different and that goes well beyond simply environments but includes characters mutual to both versions as well (He-Man, Skeletor, Sorceress, etc. are all nearly unrecognizable from their Filmation counterparts). The bright colors of the Filmation series are replaced with a more washed out pallet and the animation itself is much more action oriented (and used far less stock footage than the original relied upon). Yes folks, even He-Mans transformation routine is entirely new and much shorter. For reasons unknown, by the power of Grayskull becomes by the power of Eternia this time around as well. However once the viewer becomes accustomed to these differences, the show begins to shine in its own brilliance. In other words, it is foolhardy to attempt to compare this series to the Filmation version as it never intended to replace the universe created there. Instead this is an entirely separate concept that intended to bring the concept of He-Man to an entirely different demographic. Did Jetlag productions succeed? Without a doubt.

He-Man, in all of its incarnations, has always been great about sneaking popular culture into its plots. New Adventures keeps this tradition alive by having Skeletor lead a band of mutants in the struggle against good. In case you have been living in a cave or are too young to remember the late eighties, mutants were all the rage thanks in no small part to a quartet of ninjitsu trained shelled reptilians. Additionally Skeletor’s make over moved away from the mindless heckling and turned into a very welcome impression of Jack Nicholson’s rendition of the Joker from the 1988 blockbuster film, Batman. I cannot stress how much of an improvement this change alone brings to the richness of the show. While the show’s creators wisely kept his sidekicks in the lower reaches of the IQ scale, the writing for the Skeletor character had been improved upon tenfold.

Also unique to the series was the anime style its Asian artists incorporated. The look, texture, and feel of the show bears more of a resemblance to earlier 1980s programs such as Voltron and Robotech than it does Filmation’s take on the Mattel franchise. Then there were the plots. Long gone were the rudimentary good versus evil backbones that a majority of the Filmation episodes revolved around and in their place are much richer plot developments and more fleshed out character relationships. This is immediately apparent through the program’s use of continuous (multi part) episodes that setup the framework for the entire show. Continuity is spot-on and little, out of the way details in earlier episodes are most always revisited and further explained in later ones.

The supporting cast of characters takes a little getting used to as well. Gone are the cliche staples such as Orko and Man at Arms and in their place are a host of very Japanese feeling supporters. Among these is the wise sage Master Sebrian (a cross between Yoda and Dungeon Master), the quartet of comic relief scientists whose names are all but impossible to remember (except for Gepple), two young shepard siblings, and a few robots. Fortunately the hero (Galactic Guardians) roster quickly expands and within the first few discs we find He-Man fighting along side an impressive team of superheroes that are equal parts classic fantasy meets GI Joe.

By the time I had completed my tour of this 6-disc set, I had concluded that the show’s lackluster position in the He-Man hierarchy has less to do with quality animation and solid writing and much more to do with fans of the original incarnation becoming upset with just how different New Adventures was. However, BCI in their untiring attention to detail has arranged so that He-Fans no longer have to consider The New Adventures a threat to anyone’s pristine memories of the Filmation version. After all, they have released both shows in their entirety for fans to enjoy. Which reminds me, the actual box set itself is typical BCI magic which, in case this is the first of my many reviews you’ve stumbled upon, means beautiful cover and interior art, a full color booklet, a sixth disc filled with bonus material, and a pair of collectors art cards (this time by Ed McGuinness and Bryan Hitch).

I have been writing to this company for years asking them to pick up this property again and they finally did! So you can thank me for this juicy bit of Samurai Cinema. These films are wonderful and I would recommend them for anybody (over the age of 18) who loves “Zatoichi” or any other Samurai film or series such as “Lone Wolf and Cub.” Purposeful plots and fun fight scenes splatter across the screen in these first four films of Nemuri Kyoshiro, the Son of the Black Mass, as he roams the streets of Edo or the countryside of fuedal Japan. Give these films a try and you wont be disappointed, fail to do so and you may be disemboweled…

I own the laser disc versions of episodes 1-4 from Animeigo so am eagerly awaiting the price going down to ‘upgrade’ my collection of these great films into DVD format. Raizo’s character in this series just doesn’t operate with a consistently moral deck - he is erratic (and thus the films are always surprising. Great character.) The middle period of these “Son of Black Mass” films (ep 5-8) have better production values than these four and the series gets more psychedelically baroque as it moves on (not to detriment.) I find myself not really responding fully to the series (which I watch repeatedly) until episode three. The bad princess in film three is great, and the somewhat slower/dark (by that I mean not very bright prints) episodes 1 & 2 are left behind. From this point on the series becomes consistently exceptional, albeit a bit episodic with arbitrary plotting at times. The Black Mass films have replaced the Lone Wolf and Cub flics (the six films) as my favorite all-time chambarra fix.

These “It’s a Small World” DVDs use classic Disney cartoons to take viewers around the world. They’re not geography lessons, but they do make a fun complement to Disney’s “The Little Einsteins.”

Originally shown in theaters, the cartoons feature bright animation atop gorgeous watercolors. And though they are often filled with sight gags, they’re never the least bit cynical. Destinations on this “Volume 1″ disk include Argentina, the Netherlands, Australia and Africa:

A boy finds a flying donkey and enters it in a horse race in the charming “The Flying Gauchito,” a cartoon the whole family will enjoy. Kids will crack up at the donkey; adults will like how the off-screen narrator controls the action — and often changes his mind.

All ages will also like the Pluto cartoon “In Dutch.” Pluto’s expressive face is irresistible when he gets embarrassed, cries and gets a sneaky idea. When Pluto meets a cute girl dog he gets so smitten his face nearly transforms into Goofy’s! The plot has a simple arc any child can understand: Pluto and the girl are first treated unfairly by authority figures (they accidentally ring a Netherlands city’s emergency bell and get banished from the village) but eventually become the town heroes.

Pluto steals the show in his appearence with Mickey Mouse, “Mickey’s Down Under.” As Mickey battles an angry ostrich, Pluto tries to catch a boomerang which seems to have a mind of its own. Once it gets stuck in his mouth, Pluto’s hilarious facial expressions will tickle a viewer of any age — even a teenager.

The other cartoons are pretty good, too. Goofy’s “African Diary” combines silly animals with even sillier sight gags (the Goof does fire his rifle point blank at a rhino, though miraculously it doesn’t get hurt). Grandparents, or perhaps great grandparents, will love sitting in on “A Cowboy Needs a Horse.” It’s set in a 1950s suburban home that, if you’ve been to Walt Disney World, combines the retro waiting area of the `50s Prime Time Cafe with the eye-popping color of It’s a Small World. And everyone will succumb to the catchy theme song. The plot? A young boy’s dream-like vision of what it’s like to be a cowboy.

A modern Japanese short, “Grievance of a Starmaker” plays out like an ancient folk tale. When a depressed starmaker (Mr. Hoshi) takes his stars out of the sky — because pollution has ruined their beauty — a young boy (Yasu) volunteers to clean them. As a reward, the boy gets “a future as bright as the stars.” The cartoon was originally produced in Japanese but you’d never know it: the only voice comes from an off-screen (and now, American) narrator. Produced by Walt Disney Television Animation in 1992, the film’s rich compositions are some of the best things that outfit has done.

The set has one weak link. A tiny elephant lives in constant danger of being killed in the scary, if slow-paced, “Goliath II,” a cartoon in which the characters look lazily similar to those in earlier feature films. The crocodile is identical to the one in “Peter Pan.”

Disney collectors often dismiss these DVDs because the cartoons often contain dust marks and other signs of age — frustrating since the company cleaned up the shorts for the earlier “Walt Disney Treasures” series. But frankly that shouldn’t discourage you. To a preschooler — or anyone watching on a backseat DVD player — it won’t matter.

Also check out Walt Disney’s It’s a Small World of Fun, Vol. 3.

Personally, I do collect the Disney Treasures tins, so for me there were only two shorts of interest in this DVD collection of 7 Disney animated shorts, but I decided one of those was reason enough to make the purchase. And with that in mind, I was slightly disappointed. But more on that later.

As previously stated, this first volume of Disney’s 4 volume (so far) “It’s a Small World of Fun” line is a collection of seven short Disney cartoons. Six of these cartoons are theatrically released classics. The seventh is a first-see for Americans, “Grievance of a Starmaker” from 2002, and was the result of a Japanese story-writing contest. The winner’s story was made into a Disney animated short, and this DVD is the first and only way for Americans to currently see the short. Now, the idea behind the title of this DVD line and how the shorts were selected for it is that each short represents a different part of the world. Naturally, the line title is taken from that very popular Disney theme park ride/song, “It’s a Small World (After All)”. Unfortunately, the song is not featured anywhere on the disc, not even on the menu, which would have been nice.

Here is the line-up:

1. “The Flying Gauchito” (South America): This short was originally part of the 1944 feature “The Three Caballeros”, but was released as a solo short the next year. It is the story of a little boy who captures a winged, flying Donkey and tries to use him to win a horse race and get rich. A very enjoyable short, but the major flaw of this collection because the print used looks like something you’d find on a $1.00 DVD of a public domain cartoon. The picture is shaky and loaded with artifacts. You’re better off getting this one in the context of Three Caballeros, which is a wonderful film anyway. Luckily, the rest of the shorts on this disc are of excellent quality.

2. “In Dutch” (Holland): This 1946 Pluto cartoon presents his romance with Dina the Dachshund as a setup for trouble. Pluto’s mistake of an accidental false alarm causes their village to simply not pay attention to him later when the nearby dyke really springs a leak and only he and Dina know!

3. “Goliath II” (India): All Jungle Book fanatics like myself should enjoy this 1960 treat about a tiny little elephant who is a pain to his herd until the day comes when he is the only one who can save it. Sterling Holloway provides his always charming narration.

4. “Mickey Down Under” (Australia): From 1948, this classic Mickey cartoon features Pluto’s problems with Mickey’s boomerang and Mickey’s troubles with an angry mother ostrich.

5. “African Diary” (Africa): Goofy heads out on safari accompanied by narration until a run-in with a rhino sends him packing! Hilarious Goofy antics from 1945.

6. “A Cowboy Needs a Horse” (U.S.A.): Brimming with 50’s nostalgia, this musical treat is a boy’s fantasy of being a cowboy and done in some delightfully stylized animation from 1956. A longtime favorite of mine.

7. “Grievance of a Starmaker” (Japan): From 2002, this short tells the tale of a little boy who wonders where all the stars have gone. He sets out to find the old starmaker, and when he does, he befriends him. It seems the starmaker is upset that pollution has dirtied his stars and no one seems to care, but through hard work, the little boy cleans all the stars and earns them back for the world. It’s a cute little story, but feels rather rushed and while some like the animation style used, it looked rather like simple Flash animation to me (or one of those home computer styles, I’m really not an expert on them) and not really all that charming. Not terrible though.

So, there you have it. If you don’t have these shorts, this is definitely worth owning. Not that I would pay too much, as it’s only around 55 minutes and has no bonus features. Incidentally, I do like the colorful cover art, but a funny side note is that pictured on the back as a scene from “The Flying Gauchito” is actually a scene from a totally different cartoon not even on this set, “Pedro” (the little airplane) from Saludos Amigos, ha (Pedro’s short is actually on It’s a Small World of Fun volume 2). As for my personal issues, like I said, I already had many of these but bought it for two: The Flying Gauchito and Grievance of a Starmaker. Truth is, since I own The Three Caballeros, I didn’t care much about getting the short version of Fying Gauchito but saw it as a bonus. I mainly bought this for Grievance. But that doesn’t excuse the awful quality in which Gauchito was presented, for which I’ll be docking this disc one star. But I was more disappointed in Grievance due to both how rushed and how short it was (4 minutes and 4 seconds, I believe) and how cheap the animation appeared. Stylized is one thing, but to me this just looked cheap. Nevertheless, I do not regret buying this DVD. As a Disney completist, I had to get Grievance for my collection, and I certainly don’t mind having backups/quicker access to the other shorts on here than fumbling through my Treasures sets. So, if you don’t own these shorts, this is worth getting, but if you have all the Treasures collections and Three Caballeros, you’ll have to decide for yourself if you are a completist or not and NEED “Grievance of a Starmaker”.

Season 3 of Lost in Space had a very ambitious start. You could feel the excitement of the new direction the show tried early in this season. From the exciting and grand new theme to actually going into space more often, Season 3 did start out very well. However, the lazy writing to “comedic villain” of the week started to creep up by the middle of this volume.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Lost in Space - Season 3, Vol. 1! Click Here

Season 3, Volume 1 features some of the best episodes of the third season and a few approach the best or at least the most ambitious of the entire series. We start out with the action packed “Condemned of Space” where we see the Robinson’s lift off, dodge a comet, loose the Robot in Space and come across a frozen prison. We move on to “A Visit to a Hostile Planet” where we feature one of the best of the series (though logic is out the window) where our crew returns to Earth of the Past. We take a trip to a comical yet original premise in “Kidnapped in Space” and then the traditional “crash” in Hunter’s moon. And even when stuck on a planet for a while, they to attempt new fresh ideas, most notably some bonding between Don and Smith in “Space Primevals.” And bad creature effects aside, “Space Creature” gave us one of the deepest Lost in Space episodes to date.

Near the end of this volume, it would seem that the writers milked all they could out of the return to action and adventure and had to settle back to farcical fantasy and the results not very good. We get three episodes in a row that pretty much sign the death certificate of the entire series. “A Day at the Zoo” puts the Robinsons in a traveling Zoo. “Two Weeks in Space” features the Jupiter 2 as a resort for fugitive aliens, complete with a cash register and badminton equipment. And “Castles in Space”, while starting strong, falls on its face with a silver Mexican, Don making a mannequin in the likeness of a Mexican woman, and the robot getting drunk. If it weren’t for the excellent “The Anti-Matter Man”, this volume would have gone out on a horrible note.

Season 3, Volume 1 is presented in broadcast order I believe. This is a welcome change because prior video releases did not have them in this order and we often had illogical order to them being crashed and then back in space. The DVD transfers are good but again, a remaster would have been welcomed.

Season 3 rates way above season 2 in terms of quality but because of hitting rock bottom with some truly dreadful episodes, the show alas was doomed. Volume 1 of Season 3 features the strongest of the entire season.

LOST IN SPACE was a silly series. Of that there can be no doubt. It was, however, quite fun. Jonathan Harris, playing Dr. Zachary Smith, stole the show as a cowardly, greedy, lazy and incompetent stow away. He was always causing problems and good for a few laughs.

The series changed over the course of 3 seasons. It started out as a fairly serious science fiction series. By the second season, it had become nothing more than a campy comedy. The third season saw a reversion back towards the serious end of the spectrum but only just barely. The plots were, by a large, a bit more believeable but there was no doubt that this was as much comedy as drama. The cast did not take themselves too seriously and that contributed to the fun.

The series was noted for laughable costumes and special effects which used a bang, flash of smoke and disappearance/reappearance to solve any effects situation. What the series lacked in seriousness, costume, plot, and effects, it made up for with good humor and some of the richest color to appear on television at that time. It comes through well on the DVDs.

The episodes in this collection include:

One of the things I like about this particular collection is the music. The theme was different each season had had nothing to commend it until the third. For some reason, this theme song struck a chord in me as a young boy and I still like it. It is not great but, to me, it is memorable. Like the series itself, it is not to be taken seriously it is to be simply enjoyed for fun.

Condemned of Space - The Robinsons and crew are finally back in space again. They had no choice since the planet they had been stranded on was targeted by a rogue comet. As to be expected, they barely made it. No sooner than they out into space, Smith manages to jettison the robot by pushing the wrong button. It seems that the robot is lost for good when the ship finds its way to a space station for convicts. Lo and behold, the robot is there waiting for them. While Prof. Robinson and Maj. West go looking for some spare parts, Smith and Will go exploring. Smith wandering around in a prison is NOT a good idea.

Visit to a Hostile Planet - They almost make it. An accident takes the Jupiter II to Earth. They land but are mystified when they cannot contact anyone. Slowly, the awful truth sets in. They are not in their own time of 1997 but are in 1947 instead. People think they are hostile aliens and the reception is decidedly cold. Things get even worse when Smith decides to stay on earth to become some sort of a leader. As a bonus, Judy has more lines in this one than she has had in any episode for almost a year.

Kidnapped In Space - The Dr. Smith hears an SOS from another ship while he is listening to the radio. He is inclined to ignore it until he hears that there is a reward. That caught his attention. When he shows up he is told that he will be forced to do brain surgery on their leader. Failure to effect a cure will result in a death sentence for Smith. It gets more complicated when the leader turns out to be a computer. This is where the robot steps up to the plate. His services are liked so well that they do not want to let him go.

Hunter’s Moon - An emergency leads to a forced landing on a planet. The problem is that their presence interrupted a hunter during his hunt. The hunter is a crown prince and his suitability to the throne will be determined by how well he does in his hunting. He decides to make up his deficient score by hunting the Robinsons.

Space Primevals - Volcanoes are threatening the Jupiter II and Smith is sent with Maj. West to set of a charge to cap one of them. When they get near, they are captured by a tribe of cavemen who are ruled by a computer. Smith and West are sentenced to death. This one is kind of sick in that West and Smith hate each other but impending death draws them together. Seeing the robot do caveman dances does not make up for it.

Space Destructors - Smith stumbles into a cave with a machine that makes cyborgs. He decides to make his own personal army to conquer the galaxy. Needless to say, the others are not happy with this development.

The Haunted Lighthouse - This one features Penny who finds a castaway boy with strange powers to affect the minds of others. The Robinsons take him in just as they launch. While whizzing about, they come across a lighthouse from earth and its caretaker. They have an opportunity to get home but that means that the boy will not be able to get home. He is not pleased.

Flight Into the Future - Will and Smith accidentally land on a strange planet in the spacepod. A machine tries to convince them of a Rip Van Winkle event and that they are all far in the future. Meanwhile, the rest of the Jupiter II crew lands and tries to find them.

Collision of Planets - While the Jupiter II is grounded doing some repair work, the planet they are on is on a collision course with another planet. The inhabitants of that other planet dispatch a shiftless crew to destroy the Robinson’s planet. They are a bunch of inconsiderate hippies who will not grant the Robinsons a few extra hours to complete their repairs. I didn’t care for hippies in the 60s and they seem no better now.

Space Creature - The Jupiter II is captured by a living mist. If this is not bad enough the mist is evil and feeds on fear. It does all it can to frighten the travelers. Smith makes a likely target.

Deadliest of the Species - While flying through space, a foreign probe hitches a ride behind the Jupiter II. When they land, the probe crashes nearby. It turns out that it contains a very dangerous prison escapee and that escapee is a robot, a female robot. The Robinson’s robot naturally falls in love and is willing to work against his own family. This one was pretty sappy.

A Day at the Zoo - In intergalactic zookeeper captures the Robinsons to put on exhibit in his zoo. Smith manages to ingratiate himself and even manages to take over, lured to this course of action by his own avarice. He again manages to hack off everyone. This episode is more like those of the previous season in tone. The first appearance of the alien is so ludicrous that it is a relief to learn he is only wearing a mask to frighten his prey.

Two Weeks in Space - While most of the family is away, Will, Smith and the Robot are left behind at the Jupiter II. They get a call from an incoming spaceship and Smith sets up as a resort hotel to cash in on the visitors. The problem is that the visitors are fleeing robbers and are looking to set up their hosts for the fall.

Castles is Space - While working on a remote communications relay, Wlll, Dr. Smith, Maj. West, Judy and the robot come across a frozen alien sarcophagus. The revived alien turns out to be a beautiful princess from an ice planet. Another spacefarer shows up looking for her. He has been searching for her so that he can hold her for ransom. When West refuses to give the princess up, the bandit kidnaps Will.

The Anti Matter Man - Don’t expect antimatter to mean was physicists mean. In this case is means the “evil twin”. Professor Robinson gets kidnapped by his evil double from an evil parallel universe. The plan is to replace the real Prof so that he can stay in our universe. When he comes through, however, everyone notices that he does not act like himself.

“The Brak Show” is a spinoff of “Space Ghost Coast To Coast,” but is completely different in content, concept, and character development. This is a wonderful little set of offbeat episodes that will delight and amuse. The best part of “The Brak Show” is the interplay of Brak and Zorak, particularly when they interact with others. Of all the episodes on the set, I love the episode starring Mr. Tickles, the goldfish owned by Thundercleese. Brak makes a mess of the situation, ultimately having to meet the brother of Mr. Tickles: Don Tickles, Notary Public. Despite the scheming, Thundercleese is not fooled, and Zorak gets his hilarious comeuppance. I liked this episode so much than when I was recently given a Beta fish, I named him “Don Tickles, Notary Public”, which seriously made my petsitter stop to ponder the situation.
