Like a lot of the other reviewers, I’m a big fan of Asian horror of all kinds–I had overlooked this modest little film until now, but it was reasonably entertaining and, despite the occasional silliness, has a cohesive plot and some good effects. (There’s a very brief moment when the shadow of a passing coffin falls over a young woman’s face, which then contorts into the most terrifying expression I’ve ever seen. I don’t know if it was CGI or not, but it’s *really* creepy.)

It’s not exactly non-stop terror and the young heroine’s cluelessness occasionally gets irritating, but I still found it preferable to some of the earlier j- and k-horror movies that suffer from disjointed plots and ridiculous inconsistencies. Stylistically, it’s much closer to the Pang brothers’ Eye movies.

This is a film that was produced in Singapore, where my inital thought, that this film just wanted to capitalise on the current unstoppable flow of horror films that seem to follow from the asian countries. Add to that a title that seems even more tacky… I wasn’t expecting much… But i was indeed in for a shock…..

The Maid; like it’s title, is a tale that is centered around a domestic helper, aged 18, who has travelled to the Philippines to Singapore, in hope to earn money so as to provide a better life for her family back home. Situation is such that money is urgently required to save her ill brother back home.

She is employed by an elderly couple, Mr and Mrs Teo who have a mentally-handicapped son Ah Soon. The relationship between all of them is good, and all seems to go well.

In chinese mythology, the 7th month of the Lunar Calendar is widely considered the Hungry Ghost festival - when the gates of hell swing open and for 30 days, the dead walk among the living. There are some rules during these months that are praticsed during these months amoung most… of which include - not to turn your head when some1 taps or calls your name over the shoulder… Lot of other rules are also mentioned, and most of these have been brushed off as Old wives tale…

The maid (Alessandra De Rossi) brushes them off, and unfortuantely, she gets entangled into the ghostly world….

The acting is decent, with my hat going out to Alessandra De Rossi who makes her performance very believable. But what makes this movie a regular scarefest is the fact that the director is trying too hard to scare us that the scares all seem too rehearshed. This film has a very decent premise, and the acting an’t too bad… But i would suggest a rental for all those interested, before committing a purchase, as this is a film for only the acquired taste.

Dvd wise, Tartan issues the regular stuff-along with Mandarin Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 Surround tracks with a few trailers of it’s upcoming movie selections - English subtitles will be available….

******** I have just recieved word that the dvd presentation has a very serious problem with it. For some reason Tartan has tried to stretch what appears to be a 1.85:1 ratio into about a 2.35:1. Also the image is non-anamorphic. For this alone…. i suggest you skip the release!!!

This seasons twists and turns have renewed my interest and respect for Lost. There were no fillers due to the (mostly planned) reduced episode count and even with the writer’s strike it was a solid season. There were really only 2 hours lost to the writer’s strike anyway, which ABC has stated they will “give back” by giving 1 extra hour to the next 2 seasons. The quality of the show this season more than made up for the reduced episode count.

It was interesting in the final show of the 3rd season to see Jack’s focus change (seen in a flash forward) from getting off the island to getting back on it. This season was spent giving a set up to the reason why without really answering the question but creating enough suspense to make it worth finding out…next season I hope. This season is about who gets off the island (the Oceanic 6, as they’re called) and how, and a bit about what they’re going to do back in the real world. A few other people also get off the island but they aren’t included in “the Oceanic 6″ and you’ll also get a partial reason why by the last episode, as well as finding out who was in the coffin in the final episode of the 3rd season that had Jack so upset (but not why or how.) Jack finally finds out who Claire is to him, but we still don’t know what actually happened to her. Ben’s character becomes more complex, as we start to see how he manages to go from outcast to leader and gets people to do what he wants (such as Locke, Sayid, and even Jack,) even if they are uneasy in their association with him. Clearly some other Oceanic refugees have escaped the island but we don’t know how yet, and it doesn’t seem like the “Oceanic 6″ are necessarily even aware of them.

Another interesting addition this season is the newcomers, the “freighter folk,” who may as well be the new “others.” Some are decent people and some are evil, and one will be familiar face from previous seasons. Speaking of “the others,” who they are, where they came from, and what is their nature became a new set of unanswered questions this season. I wasn’t thrilled with Rosseau’s or her daughter’s storylines, but it seems what happened was done in order to develop Ben’s character.

Witness the power of the show’s many musical themes as well as its innovative use of instruments-and learn how music affects the production, from writing to directing.

I recommend this season for anyone who ever enjoyed this show. You won’t feel the writer’s strike when watching the DVDs.

LOST Season 4 started off with a bang. In the final episode of Season 3, we see Jack finally getting an opportunity to go back home but having that opportunity being taken away from him. We see the Others attack the camp of where the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 were staying but most of all, a significant death of a main character. But what was even more surprising for everyone was to see Jack and Kate several years in the future. With Jack telling Kate that they need to go back.

This left fans with a significant hint that there are survivors who made it off the island. But who were they? Also, who will be rescuing the survivors or more like, are they even there to save them?

There are so many things that happened in Season 4 that it would be too difficult to explain but I can tell you that the whole season was exciting and despite the writer’s strike possibly hindering the amount of episodes in the season, “LOST” was able to capitalize with quality over quantity in a total of 13 episodes and boy did they deliver.

“LOST - THE COMPETE FOURTH SEASON” features the following episodes:

1. The Beginning of the End

2. Confirmed Dead

3. The Economist

4. Eggtown

5. The Constant

6. The Other Woman

7. Ji Yeon

8. Meet Kevin Johnson

9. The Shape of Things to COme

10. Something Nice Back Home

11. Cabin Fever

12. There’s No Place Like Home (Part 1 of 2)

13. There’s No Place Like Home (Part 2 of 2)

Again, I really don’t want to spoil the season for anyone but I will say that the body count of this season is quite high and the amount of action is also quite high for the fourth season. The storytelling was just awesome and the acting was well done. Especially the final episode. Absolutely fantastic!

VIDEO:

The video is featured in 1080p High Definition/1:78:1. One of the first things you will notice is how the island just comes alive with the vibrant colors. From the lush greens to the variation of blues from the sky to the ocean. And yes, you will be able to see the pores, the wrinkles of each actor. The picture quality was absolutely beautiful. I did see a few scenes (low-light) where there was considerable noise. But only a few scenes.

AUDIO:

The audio features are English 5.1 uncompressed (48khz/16-bit) and English and French in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Spanish in Dolby Digital 2.0. During the action scenes or when you hear the music during a suspenseful scene, that is when you hear the audio being utilized. Especially for this season due to the amount of explosions. But overall, the audio is primarily dialogue. You won’t hear birds chirping or the oceans waves pounding from the island, but after watching the featurettes and the challenges of filming in public beaches and areas near traffic, I can understand the crew trying to make sure the dialogue came out clear and not trying to incorporate another noises that could have hindered the dialogue.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Blu-ray edition of “LOST - THE COMPLETE SEASON FOUR” definitely is full of special features. Included are:

* LOST in 8:15 - Learn about “LOST SEASONS 1-3 in 8:15

* The Right to Bear Arms - Guns are used a lot in “LOST” but because they are on an island, who has to track who has what weapon and how many weapons there are. This featurette was quite interesting.

* The Freighter Folk - A look at the new faces on this third season of people on that freighter

* The Island Backlot: Lost in Hawaii - A fantastic featurette that is quite lengthy and shows how certain scenes have come to life on “LOST”. How certain countries around the world were all filmed in Hawaii and how post-production came through to make it look like it was filmed elsewhere. Very entertaining featurette.

* The Oceanic Six: A Conspiracy of Lies - A very interesting 20+ minute documentary about those who challenge the inconsistencies of the Oceanic 6 survivors and research disputing the survivor’s stories. Very interesting!

* Offshore Shoot - The building and shooting on the freighter

* Lost - The Missing Pieces - These “MOBisodes” were featured on abc.com and there are certain scenes not shown on “LOST” that definitely shows missing pieces from previous seasons that actually make you think and wonder of past storylines. Without spoiling this part for for anyone, I will talk about one which took place in the early parts of Season 1 between Sun and Michael. Sun was burying her California ID which she was going to use after separating from her husband. But Michael arrives and really listens to her. The two nearly get romantic. You never see this on Season 1. You get a feeling that perhaps Michael may like Sun but you never see anything happen. But after seeing this one MOBisode, you actually see both of them nearly kissing.

* Soundtrack of Survival: Composing for Character, Conflict & the Crash - This section was on how the music is scored for “LOST” but also featuring the live performance of the Honolulu Symphony Pops. The Blu-ray version features more live performances including “The Others” (uncut).

* LOST on Location - Behind-the-scenes of the cast and crew

* Course of the Future: The Definitive Flash-Forwards

* LOST Bloopers

* Deleted Scenes

* Audio Commentaries - LOST fans will love the commentaries by Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. The two have always had this cool chemistry and humor during their discussions since the first year and their old LOST podcasts and it continues. More insight on the show and inside jokes.

* SeasonPlay: This technology allows people to watch the episodes like watching it on television and even if you eject your Blu-ray to watch something else, when you put it back in to your player, it will remember where you last left off.

* And much more…

Like previous “LOST” Seasons on DVD and Blu-ray, there are also Easter Eggs. In fact, there over 20 of them. You can find many of them here.

[…]

I’ve owned every season of “LOST” on DVD and Blu-ray but the fourth season on Blu-ray is visually and audio appealing for “LOST” fans, there are so many awesome bonus features, let alone Easter Eggs that you can’t help but be content and happy with the overall product.

The fourth season with it’s gripping storyline, action and acting really made the fourth season quite enjoyable. But the Blu-ray version really enhanced my love or this show due to the vibrant colors and just the beauty of the island and the audio quality but how many special features (that were quite lengthy) included on this box set. You’re getting your money’s worth with this release.

There are not many television shows on Blu-ray at this time but currently, I have to say that “LOST - THE COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON” is the best out there right now. A total package and a must own for fans of the series!

This incredibly impressive DVD captures many fascinating and often unknown hummingbird behaviors, as well as the remarkable beauty of species found in both the US and south of the border. My family and I have never seen a hummer program this good on a commercial DVD release. Videographer Kaminski is at his best delivering incredibly colorful clips of hummers “doing their thing,” often in slow motion so we can see what they’re really doing. His humorous narrative provides loads of educational information and rare insights into the typical lives of 57 species. The musical score is outstanding. This is a very entertaining DVD that should be in every hummer enthusiast’s collection.

This beautifully-filmed DVD is the second Avian Video Center hummingbird program we’ve purchased, and we are so happy to have witnessed, via excellent camera work, these small, but powerful creatures. In addition to showing every U.S. species, it depicts dozens of incredibly colorful hummers that are found in Mexico, Central and South America. It also shows hummers for what they really are: wild animals that live by the law of the jungle, with special adaptations that allow them to do what they do. We enjoyed the comparison of hummers’ hovering flight to that of raptors, for example, but one of our favorite revelations was that the birds shut kown their kidneys at night. Wish we could do that! We liked the information “time out” when we were shown hummers flitting from flower to flower (none of those flowers are red!) to the tune of Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz of the Flowers.” There is so much information that you have to watch it several times to take in everything. A very creative, informative and entertaining DVD that we, and our young grandchildren, give our highest recommendation. I’m buying another to give as a gift!

“The Brak Show” is a spinoff of “Space Ghost Coast To Coast,” but is completely different in content, concept, and character development. This is a wonderful little set of offbeat episodes that will delight and amuse. The best part of “The Brak Show” is the interplay of Brak and Zorak, particularly when they interact with others. Of all the episodes on the set, I love the episode starring Mr. Tickles, the goldfish owned by Thundercleese. Brak makes a mess of the situation, ultimately having to meet the brother of Mr. Tickles: Don Tickles, Notary Public. Despite the scheming, Thundercleese is not fooled, and Zorak gets his hilarious comeuppance. I liked this episode so much than when I was recently given a Beta fish, I named him “Don Tickles, Notary Public”, which seriously made my petsitter stop to ponder the situation.

“Unforgiven” is much more than a breathtaking Western, it’s an amazing film altogether. With elements of drama and film noir, this is a picture that shows us that there are some demons you can never put to rest, no matter how hard you try.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Unforgiven! Click Here

Clint Eastwood stars as William Munny, a once notorious and violent killer and thief. If Munny didn’t like you, chances were that you wouldn’t live long enough for him to tell you so. However, that was in the old days. Now, he’s just a quiet and tired farmer who is a devoted father still in mourning of his dead wife. He’s been straight for years and is trying to put all of his demons to rest, but you still get the feeling that no matter how hard he tries, he will always be haunted. An opportunity comes to him in the name of `The Schofield Kid.’ He gives him a chance to be his partner and have him help on a bounty. Knowing that the money could help his family out, Munny finally decides to take the Kid up on the offer. He also brings with him Ned Logan; an old friend and partner. Little Bill Daggett is the Sheriff in town, and the thing he hates most are assassins. He will do anything in his power to take care of them and make sure they do not succeed on their killing. The last remaining part of the film stands out the most and is so well executed that it catches you off guard.

This really is a great film and it surprised me like I would’ve never expected. I don’t like Westerns all that much, but this isn’t your typical Western. That is probably why I enjoyed it so much. There is so much story and character development. You really are able to sympathize with Munny, despite his dark and violent past. You want him to be able to get on with his life and forget the past, although you know deep down that things will never be put to rest, and agreeing to go on this bounty only increases the chance of Munny returning back to his old ways. This isn’t a Western where the line between good guys and bad guys are clear and the storyline is simple; good guy kills bad guys and gets the girl in the end. No, you won’t find any of this here. In this story there are no clear good guys or bad guys, just regular people. This is a real story with real characters that you can feel for. There is a huge issue of morality that takes place, which is something you don’t see much in Westerns.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Unforgiven! Click Here

Not only does Eastwood do a terrific job in acting, he also does an amazing job as director. He’s a man with vision, and who more qualified to direct a film of this magnitude. I don’t think the film would had been as successful had it been done by someone else. The cast is also outstanding. Morgan Freeman really does his role justice. Gene Hackman spreads fear inside of you as the mean and tough Sheriff. Richard Harris also deserves mention for his part as well. (He is sorely missed. He was a very gifted actor.) Everyone really did great in their roles and really knew how to bring the film together.

This new DVD edition really does the movie justice. Though it may not have the most special features, the one feature that stands out the most is the new digital transfer that really makes the picture look crystal clear. The sound is also very impressive as well. Special features included are as follows: Audio commentary by Film Critic and Eastwood Biographer Richard Schickel, Eastwood film highlights, awards list, trailer, and 4 documentaries.

“Unforgiven” is really a spectacular film that deserved the Academy Awards for “Best Picture” and “Best Director.” And it is a true masterpiece in my eyes. I think anyone who is a lover of films should give this one a try. Remember, you do not have to be a Western fan to enjoy this, because I am certainly not one. Some people may be disappointed in the lack of action or shoot-outs, but the film is about so much more. It’s about morals and trying to put the past to rest. It’s also about accepting who you are and that there are some things you will never be able to change, no matter how hard you try. This will end up being one of my favorites in no time. I was very surprised, indeed.

Unforgiven is clearly among the top westerns ever made. This movie is simple, dark and yet highly complex in its superb script and the outstanding performances by all concerned. Few westerns will draw you into the lead characters as this one does. Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman and the sorely missed Richard Harris all deserved awards for their collective performances. What is a western without Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman!

The premise:

Welcome to Big Whiskey Wyoming, where in a small “billiards” saloon, a cowboy gets angry at a whore and, with the help of his buddy, cuts her face up. The other “women” of the establishment, pool their money and start telling everybody that they’re offering a reward to whoever kills these two young cowboys. This is precipitated by Gene Hackmans character Little Bill, who essentially doesn’t punish them for their crime.

Clint Eastwood plays William Munny, who in his earlier days was every bit one of the worst, meanest gunslingers in the west. Some ten years prior to the events at the beginning of this fine film, William Munny met his wife Claudia, who turned this serious gunslinger into a family man, unfortunately for him and his little children, his wife died three years prior. He is now a poor pig farmer, with two little children.

The son of one of his old riding buddies has heard about this reward and seeks out William Munnys assistance in tracking down these unpunished criminals. After some hesitation, he seeks out his friend Ned, played by Morgan Freeman, one of the finest actors of our day. The three of them head north to seek out the reward.

What follows is clearly a movie that while, for the better part is melodramatic; it is that melodrama that is gripping. All those who received accolades for this fine film, richly deserved those accolades.

This exceptional film that graced the silver screen so beautifully and then the home theater, deserves a hallowed place on ones DVD rack and is perfectly well suited to repeated viewings. I highly recommend this masterpiece to any and all, even those who may not find themselves interested in westerns will find this film highly compelling. {ssintrepid}

A modernized samurai film and who best to create such a film that would appeal on a worldwide level, what better than Takeshi Kitano aka Takeshi Beat.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi! Click Here

“The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi” is written and directed by Takeshi Kitano and is based on the novels by Kan Shimosawa. The film would go on to win many awards worldwide and receive positive reviews amongst the critics but would achieve success because of its modern-take on the samurai genre. Needless to say, Kitano fans have been waiting for another brilliant film from the popular actor/director and the film definitely received worldwide respect.

In Japan, Takeshi Kitano is one of those talents that can be seen on television via a variety show, a serious talk show and radio show and mostly a comedic talent that is known for making people laugh or bringing out subjects that people in Japan, often don’t want talk about. But a a filmmaker, Kitano is world renown. From his role in “Taboo”, “Hana-bi”, “Battle Royale”, “Brother” and “Dolls”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi! Click Here

Known for also being tough in his yakuza-genre based films, he also shown his resilience after bouncing back from a nearly fatal motorcycle accident that paralyzed one side of his boy.

Although a celebrated filmmaker, Kitano is known to do things his way and his style and in 2003, he intended to do just that for a samurai film based on Shintaro Katsu’s “Zatoichi” TV series. But again, in Kitano’s style and not redoing things that people have already seen in the TV series. To give his own spin and also to not make things serious by utilizing CG-blood, Kitano would also have blonde hair and most interesting is that the film included a dance number at the end of the film.

“The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi” features Takeshi Kitano as Zatoichi, a samurai who is blind but wanders around the country using his senses to win at gambling and also his skills as a masseuse. But he’s also, a samurai with tremendous skills and is a man who is known to protect the innocent and those who have been hurt or oppressed.

In this film, he enters a town which has suffered from the various Yakuza gangs and business owners are expected to pay them from monthly to weekly for “protection money”. Unfortunately, a lot of these business owners are unable to afford to live with the earnings minus what they owe to the Yakuza and if they try to stand up to the Yakuza, they are either killed or beaten.

One of the women who has dealt with the Yakuza is Aunt Oome (Michiyo Ookusu) who has taken Zatoichi into her home temporarily.

Meanwhile, we learn of a talented ronin samurai named Hattori Genosuke (Tadanobu Asano) who has a wife that is sick and willing to take any job. Desperate in trying to make money to pay for medicine, he takes a job as an assassin for one of the Yakuza gangs (who are planning to eliminate the other two gangs and take sole control of the financial resources).

One night, Aunt Oome talks about the Yakuza’s who try to take money from the farmers and also about her nephew Shinkichi who is a hardcore gambler. With Zatoichi being a big gambler himself, he wants to check out the various gambling spots in town. He manages to meet Shinkichi at the gambling area but also surprises him by his wins through using his heightened senses and the two end up becoming friends.

While the two continue to gamble, we are then introduced to two Geishas named Osei (Daigoro Tachibana) and Geisha Okinu (Yuko Daike) who appear to be geisha’s that commit murder.

While becoming lucky at the gambling hall, both Zatoichi and Shinkichi go to celebrate their winnings and eventually look for some fun visiting various geisha but instead hook up with the two murdering Geisha’s but Zatoichi quickly senses that these two are not who they think they are.

We learn that both geisha are actually brother and sister who want revenge after the Yakuza who killed their entire family. Due to circumstances, the four may end up needing to team up with each other, as each become targets of the Yakuza.

But for Zatoichi, he has heard enough of the oppression by this Yakuza group and the target becomes the Yakuza.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi” is presented in 1080p High Definition (1:85:1) and comes with mix results. Disney Blu-rays are typically known for their quality picture and audio quality but “Zatoichi” has been DNR’d (digital noise reduction) but not excessively.

Also, there are signs of edge enhancement as well and makes you wonder if the original film was in bad shape. Nevertheless, it would have been nice to have a more detailed image quality with its original grain but nevertheless, the picture quality is not vibrant as I have hoped. But for the most part, picture quality leans more to good than great.

As for audio quality, this is a heart-breaker as this is another film released by Disney that only the English dubbed track is featured in lossless DTS-HD quality (48 kHz/24-bit). Granted, the film’s English dub is actually quite good and I found it interesting that even during the dub, the voice talent tend to pronounce some Japanese words with the R and L’s and even adding the silent “u” after certain words. But compared to other Asian films that have been released via English dub, this one is one of the best (along with “HERO”).

With the lossless track, some scenes utilize surround during the rain scenes but for the most part, the film is a front and center channel driven film. Dialogue and music is clear and the ending dance performance really features a wonderful musical soundtrack.

But for many of us who enjoy Asian films, we prefer to watch the film in its original language and unfortunately the Japanese is only featured in 5.1 Dolby Digital (Spanish 2.0 Dolby Digital is also included). It would have been nice to hear this film in its original language via lossless but at least it was offered.

SPECIAL FEATURES

“The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi” comes with the following two special features (in 480i, English 2.0 Dolby Digital, English SDH and Spanish subtitles):

* Behind-the-Scenes Special - (35:55) An informative behind-the-scenes featurette showing the viewers of the first press conference, shooting throughout the various weeks from start to finish and then the premiere of the films at the film festivals. Featuring interviews with director/writer/actor Takeshi Kitano and the cast members.

* Exclusive Interviews with Crew - Featuring individual interviews with Katsumi Yanagishima (Cinematographer), Norihiro Isoda (Production Designer), Kazuko Kurosawa (Costume Supervisor), Tatsumi Nikamoto (Master Swordsman).

JUDGMENT CALL:

“The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi” is one of those films that you can’t help but enjoy. In fact, I have enjoyed this film so much that I don’t know many times I’ve watched it. I really enjoyed the modernizing of the samurai film and respect Kitano not wanting to emulate the classic but to do something different for the modern crowd.

Where the classic samurai films will always be there, Kitano wanted to bring some energy into the film with adding humor after major battle scenes, making the blood after a person gets slashed via CG but how it sprays, his goal was to make it more artistic. But possibly the most surprising of the film is how it ends with a beautiful dance. Where many samurai films end with the lone samurai leaving and happy villagers celebrating, he wanted to showcase that celebration through a more modernized Japanese dance that would include tap dancing.

I know for some hardcore samurai film fans, they may have a hard time seeing “Zatoichi” so far from the original television series but knowing Kitano’s films and his humor, this was definitely one of those films that has his style but also capturing the spirit of those classic samurai films.

As much as I have loved the film, I still have some problems with the Blu-ray release and its decision to feature it via DNR for the picture quality and to find out that the original Japanese language is not in lossless audio but for the most part, Disney is not the only one who has done this as other Asian (especially anime) films or television shows feature the original language without the lossless audio.

But by no means is this a bad Blu-ray release, the picture quality is not terrible and truthfully, with the videophiles as the exception, most viewers may feel the picture quality to be clean and satisfactory and as for the English dub, for those who hate reading subtitles can find solace in knowing there is a solid English dub included. I’m not so much into dubs but I have to admit that “The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi” does have a solid English dub.

Overall, “The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi” is not going to be anywhere near reference quality nor will it be up there for great Blu-ray releases but for fans of the “Zatoichi”, it’s still a wonderful film that is worth checking out!

OK, let me get this straight: the disc comes with a documentary where the director of photography EXPLICITLY details how and why the director agreed to go with a desaturated color palette for this film. Unfortunately for him, the American version of this disc simply chose to ignore their wishes, saturating the color to make the film look “normal” for American audiences (since we are a bunch of neophytes who could not understand that the color was desaturated on purpose). Joe six-pack apparently also wants films that have been oversharpened, distorting the original film look. This, and not providing us with a high quality version of the original Japanese soundtrack (naturally that is reserved for the dubbed English version, since, again, American audiences cannot bother to read subtitles or care about hearing the original language of the film) make this version of the film on Blu-Ray a slap to the face of any discerning film lover.

There are noble, handsome princes who traverse afar for the good of society, defending the weak, giving money to the poor… And then there’s Gokudo. An ill-tempered, lecherous, money-grubbing adventurer whose only thoughts are for his own safety and pleasure, he manages to accidentally save at least four people every episode, usually stealing from them in the process. His goals are never honest, and his methods are despicable, but he’s got spunk. Each episode is laugh-out-loud hilarious, the fight scenes are most excellent, and the enemies are superb. A must-see for the Slayers fan.

Gokudo: Collection Extraordinare collects all the six individually released disks for the series and put them in one over-sized pack. Spanning 26 episodes this is both one really looong breath of fresh air compared to your typical fantasy anime.

First of, let me say one thing. I simply can’t help but ADORE Gokudo, the exraordinary main character! Seeing him mess things up in his unending quest for fame and riches (in the most arrogant way possible) is encredibly entertaining. In short I’m a little biased in this review, but who wouldn’t be after loving a series.

The show features about five main story arcs that really go all over the place. One has Gokudo felling the Magic King from power, another has him come in conflict with the Buddah, God and Magic World races in one huge confrontation and yet another has him face off against Buddaha and Magic World people with the fate of the entire world resting on his actions! A little over the top, I know, but the slap-stick, often intellectual (a better word would be contextual…), keeps things running light. Gokudo and his companions are always fighting and arguing. Fighting and arguing. Not at all what you’d always expect from a group who’s destined to save the world… somehow.

Basically, you have more comedy than you can shake a stick at and, even though it won’t appeal to everybody, it will definetally have an impression. The voice actors (in both Japanese and Enlgish) to a good job making everything… absurd. As for plot, it may get a little overwhelming and overcomplicated with so much going on so quickly throughout the show that is may loose other peole who just want to relax their brains and go on auto.

Recommended! Tired of white-knights saving the world with charm and good looks? Get Gokudo: Collection Extraordinare! Its not perfect but at least it is (you guessed it) Extraordinare.

The Perfect School is one of the best Goosebumps that my seven and nine year olds have ever seen. They liked the ending because it had a clever twist. It wasn’t too scary and had just the right amount of suspense.

This is a great movie. This is my ALL time favorite Goosebumps movie. I love them all, but this one is very simple to understand, and the twist is not to confusing, and the main character is likeable.

I reccomend this movie to anyone who likes Goosebumps. There is a lot of suspense in this movie. It’s not the kind of movie that you want the good guy to loose. I was really afraid he would get caught in some of he scenes. There is a great twist at the end of this movie. I thought it would be something completely different. It is the best and probably is the best and easyist to understand. If you want to find out what this great twist is, BUY THIS MOVIE. I gaurentee you will like this movie. Here is what it is about.

The movie starts out when the main character Brian plays a prank on his little brother. Apperently he has done this before and his parents are sick of it, so they send him to a military type of school called the Perfect School. He then finds out that strange things are happening at the school. To find out what happens, see this movie!

English country life could never have been as poetic, pictorial, and enchanting as this dramatization of the lives of those living in and around the two 1880’s towns of Lark Rise and Candleford. Even the DVD’s music puts a sanguine sugarcoating on the period. All of this is to the delight of the viewer of this masterfully done TV series sure to endear any North American who has a tender video heart toward Victorian Britain. Perhaps, consider it a British mutation of “Little House on the Prairie” or “The Waltons.”

This set of 4 DVDs, 10 episodes totaling 582 minutes, is actually a 9 1/2+ hour saga (continuing panorama of human relationship) of the commoner village and the more sophisticated Candleford. The short 8-mile separation allows for much intermingling, bigotry, conflict, forbidden love, political and economic interaction. It is not a family saga, not a nobility bloodline dramatization, but a saga of struggles and lifestyles of different kinds of personalities, each caught in their own born-into world, and interacting with another different, and not always understood, class of folk.

Darling Laura Timmins (Olivia Hallinan), oldest child of a Lark Rise family, is sent off to Candleford to learn the trade of postmistress. She is the spark caught between the two towns (sometimes world’s different.) Her mentor, Dorcas (Julia Sawalha), has a personal secret. There is the expected, token-gentry, rich, Squire family, Sir Timothy (Ben Miles)& Lady Adelaide (Oliva Grant). The rest of the regular cast (at least 20 appearing in all 10 episodes) is an assortment of either the die-hard, disheveled, working class or the Candleford higher class, but yet short of nobility range. It is the individuals that make this spectacular (or fill in your own highest superlative.)

One episode travels into the next with carryover from earlier material. If you have the time, it’s best to watch it as a near 10-hour feature production. What a horrible time the original TV viewers must have had waiting for the next installment. Each episode has multiple plots so it is impossible to break down the episodes into short summaries. And with carryover from one episode to another, it’s more like moving to Lark Rise or Candleford and living with the good people (and the bad). A delightful scenic experience even Disney has never matched.

Ah, but the folks you will meet. Dr. Seuss eat your heart out. Queenie (Linda Bassett), an old bee keeper, is married to ole Twister (Karl Johnson) and both will make you laugh and cry, perhaps in the same scene. Pearl (Matilda Ziegler) and Ruby (Victoria Hamilton) own Pratt’s General Drapers & Haberdashers. They represent the best of fashion and fitness, just ask them, as they spurn much gossip and controversy. Thomas (Mark Heap) is a postal delivery man who helps keep Christianity alive and aloud. Portly Caroline (Dawn French) a mother with her man off to sea, divides her time between frivolity and beer and would make a fine Viking helpmate. And dear, dear old housemaid Zillah (a standing O for Liz Smith), is the life and death of every party–a quirkiness totally lovable. Assistant gamekeeper Phillip and melodean-playing Alfie vie for Laura’s affection, while her ma, Emma (Claudie Blakley), and pa, Robert (Brendan Coyle) try in vain to keep sanity to the comings and goings of life from “Lark Rise to Candleford.”

Oh and more, locations and sets to die for a vacation in. Costumes to dazzle, delight, and disgust, depending upon the event. Every emotion you have ever felt in your past will be repeated sometime throughout this English town saga. The adapted books by Flora Thompson have never been read by this reviewer, but I can’t imagine them being as fine as this TV series (and I’m a book lover). A superb British cast has perfected this story.

I have been waiting for this series to be released here in the United States, and watched it within two days. I have to admit that I have yet to read the book (of the same name) by Flora Thompson that this series is based on (I plan to do so soon). The book is said to be semi-autobiographical but I can’t really comment on how faithful the series is to the book since I’ve yet to read it. My review as such will be confined to the BBC drama.

The story follows the lives of the inhabitants of the poor, sleepy hamlet of Lark Rise and the more affluent and snooty inhabitants of Candleford during the last decades of the 19th century (sometime in the 1880s I believe). The central character Laura Timmins (Olivia Hallinan) is a young girl from Lark Rise who is sent by her parents to work as an assistant to the postmistress, the capable and sensible Dorcas Lane (a brilliant Julia Sawalha). Initially Laura balks at the more restrained and formal way of life in Candleford, and is humiliated by the way some of the town’s more snobbish inhabitants (such as the Pratt sisters, Pearl and Ruby, credibly portrayed by Matilda Ziegler and Victoria Hamilton) look down upon her, but she gradually finds satisfaction and a measure of happiness in her job and new surroundings, and comes to develop a true understanding of the inhabitants of both Lark Rise and Candleford, in all their complexities. Julia Sawalha is amazing in her role as the kind postmistress who acts as a sort of mentor to young Laura, and whose own life seems deceptively straightforward, despite some undercurrents, brought on by her close friendship with town squire, Sir Timothy Midwinter (Ben Miles) who is married to a city girl, the cool and composed Lady Adelaide (Olivia Grant).

To delve too much into the plot would detract from the viewer’s pleasure, and so all I will say is that this excellent series has everything to recommend it - a wonderful score, beautiful cinematography of the lush English countryside, and plenty of human drama, dealing with social issues, marital strife, forbidden desires, love across the different social classes, friendship, and lots of good old-fashioned humor. The ensemble cast is excellent and a delight to watch, engaging viewer’s interest from the first episode till the last of the season, and I was sorry to see it come to an end. I laughed and I cried and I can’t wait for Season 2 to be released on DVD!

People all over the webbins have been talking about Trick r Treat for some time now - exploring conspiratorial notions on why the film has sat shelved for so long while rhapsodizing about just how well X-Men 2/Superman Returns scribe Michael Dougherty’s directorial debut works. Having recently seen the film, I can tell you that I know why the film sat for years: It’s one of the more ruthless studio-funded horror films ever made. It’s not very gory or explicit at all - but it has a truly, deeply, bad attitude. If William Gaines penned morality plays this venomous - to hell with the Comics Code. He’d have probably served time. Trick r Treat is overflowing with the kind of anarchic, mean-spirited hilarity that never sits well with the suits.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Trick ‘r Treat! Click Here

One of the reasons the film feels so vile is that the people who populate the tale feel so utterly real. It’s really hard to explain without spoiling a lot of what makes it work so well, but - to give you an idea - director Michael Dougherty explained to us that one of the notes he received during the production process was that the children he cast were “too young”. Couldn’t he make the kids older? Couldn’t he cast hotter? That’s not to say that elements of the cast aren’t flat-out “foxy” (witness the sexi-sexi of Lauren Lee Smith and Rochelle Aytes) but there are sequences in the film that work perfectly because they’re not about plasticine twentysomethings. Again - I can’t explain exactly what I mean without doing you a disservice - but when you finally see the film, you’ll understand completely.

Trick r Treat has been described in certain quarters as an anthology film - but that’s not wholly accurate. In truth, the film possesses a non-linear narrative structure - it’s more a Pumpkin Pulp Fiction than a Creepshow copy (though the EC Comics connection this film shares with Romero’s classic make them kindred spirits - and a great double bill). The film moves back and forth between tales that, at first, seem to be related only by the presence of the mysterious, malevolent little creature seen in the film’s promotional materials. Over the running time, we come to realize that the tiny creeper pops up for a reason - and even that detail is something I don’t want to spoil for you.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Trick ‘r Treat! Click Here

Despite the aforementioned EC Comics vibe (wherein the table-turning reveal that hands the petty thief or adulterous couple their just desserts is par for the course), the twisted twistiness of Trick r Treat still manages to surprise. At different points during the running time, the audience could be heard to speculate on how they felt some swerve might play out - very early on, I had an idea of how I thought the tale featuring Dylan Baker should end - but I was convinced that there was no way my resolution would fly. That Dougherty was able to do exactly what common sense told me would be excised by an executive before it was ever filmed completely negated my anticipation of the last shot. The sequence ended the only way an understanding of the horror genre dictates it should - but instead of feeling “been there, done that” - the payoff plays like the reward for sitting through all of the committee-created genre projects that lack the spine to do it right. Another reveal - easily the film’s most glorious - made me feel like a complete idiot. Thinking about it now, I still don’t understand why I didn’t call it with a chuckle the very moment True Blood’s Anna Paquin awkwardly stepped out of her fitting room to face the derision of her friends. At least I wasn’t alone - by the end of her character’s arc, the audience I was part of sat in stunned silence…then burst into reverent applause - a response based on elements converging in a perfect storm: a beautifully-shot and edited sequence featuring a fantastic revelation, a flawless mix of practical and computer generated imagery, an awesome character beat - and one super-cool line of dialogue. You could sell the film with that single scene…if it didn’t give so much away.

The most brilliant thing about Dougherty’s film is how it uses Halloween holiday iconography to craft iconic visuals (if the film received the 3,000 screen release it so richly deserved, really cool parents would be dressing their kids up as “Sam” for years). It’s Jack O’ Lanterns and autumnal golds and vacuformed masks and flame retardant costumes that tie in the back and urban legends and classic monsters and tainted candy and everything else you know and love about October 31st. As so many before me (including Dougherty himself) have said, this is not a film that takes place during Halloween - this is a film about Halloween. It’s about the reason for the season. Dougherty says his hope was that his film could become a Halloween holiday perennial - the one you watch every year. And trust me - it is. I’ll watch Trick r Treat every CHRISTMAS - because the film is a gift.

Jason Pollock

I had a chance to see Trick ‘r Treat at the Midwest Premiere in Chicago on the big screen and I am mystified as to why this excellent film was never given a full theatrical release? It far exceeded my expectations and I believe it to have already become a classic film for horror aficionados and lovers of the greatest holiday ever, Halloween.

The film is set up as a sort of anthology of short stories, yet they all intertwine and complement each other in the end. There is some great artwork in the tradition of Creepshow and at times reminded me of that film, but the main difference is Creepshow’s stories are all their own and Trick ‘r Treat follows one night with several groups and characters that each have their own encounter with a very evil character indeed. The film has lots of suspense, violence, gore, and some sexy nudity in one story involving werewolves. We also have a serial killer principal, some rotten teens trying to scare a nerdy girl, and a story told that is destined to be some type of urban legend in the future involving mentally disabled kids and a disastrous fate. The greatest thing about Trick ‘r Treat is its style and campy flavor that truly stuck to the evil side of the tracks. The film was so much fun to watch and destined to be a genre classic.

It’s too bad that an original idea comes to Hollywood and and they respond by not giving it a release in theaters and snubbing it. I was very lucky to see it in a theater at all. It really is a shame Hollywood is only pumping out atrocious sequels, remakes, and reinterpretations left and right. I guess seeing indie flicks is the only satisfaction I will be getting anytime soon, for the major studios are filling the theaters with boring horror crapfests!
