Adult Swim have realy outdone themselves this time. Who would have thought that a cartoon about a post-apocalyptic death metal band ruling the world would be this good? Whether they’re unleashing swarms of murderous kitties on an unsuspecting populous, summoning giant trolls to ravage the countryside, trying their hand at stand-up comedy (death metal style), or destroying hippies with the combined darkness of thrash and the blues Dethklok always finds a way to keep the mayhem coming.

Featuring the world’s fastest guitarist, a bassist who can pull off a wicked solo playing with his johnson, an alcoholic drummer who used to front a bad 80’s metal band, an amusingly naive childish rhythm guitarist, and a singer who talks in his growling metal voice all the time and is obsessed with all things brutal, the show is never short of hilarious characters to abuse and the laughs just do not stop. And I haven’t even mentioned Dr. Rockso, the rock ‘n roll clown who uses his high Axl Rose-ish voice to screech his catch phrase, “I DO COCAINE!!!” at anyone who will listen.

The music is fantastically metal with plenty of double-bass drums, shredding guitar, and nearly incoherent ranting (the subtitles help lots) that will make you bang your head and laugh at the same time. The episodes are short, to the point, and packed with satire, heavy metal references (a fast food place named Dimmu Burger, anyone?), and shear insanity. My personal favorite episode involves bassist William Murderface looking for religion after a near-death experience. The band takes him to a lame christian rock show where several concert-goers and band members wind up dying grisly deaths after a Dethklok member tries to join the fun by starting a mosh pit. Later, they give devil worshipping a try in what has to be one of the funniest animated scenes (and possibly most true to life) I’ve ever watched. Best satanic quote ever: “Pick up after yourselves; this is a Church of Satan, not a wastepaper basket.”

If you don’t see a special features menu when you fire up your DVD’s, don’t freak out. The bizarre assortment of features are hidden within the menu and can be found by moving the cursor to highlight different parts of the logo or band members’ faces. There is a tour of Dethklok’s compound, Mordhaus, a series of amusing band interviews, a slightly extended Murderface bass solo, a montage featuring the series’ more violent moments, and even a little porn. Then there’s the 20 minutes of frontman Nathan Explosion reading Shakespeare; if you can sit through that, you are a bigger fan than I. My only complaint is that -while the special features are freeballing it- the show itself remains censored. Sure, the cool guitar noises beat the hell out of the bleeps other shows use, but they should be optional. Still it’s a minor complaint about an awesome set.

So if you’re a metalhead with a sense of humor or are looking for some truly twisted, violent, and laugh-out-loud funny animated entertainment to NOT share with your children then “Metalocalypse” is as good as it gets. And with each episode clocking in at a little over 10 minutes, it’s a fantastic way to catch some quick laughs and hear some headbanging good music on the run. “Now go forth and DIIIIIEEEE!!!!”

Metalocalypse… I shouldn’t really have to say more but I’d love to anyway. I was channel surfing one night and came across the best show Adult Swim has to offer, and changed the channel. It was halfway through the episode and I didn’t know what was going on. Later, a buddy of mine told me to watch it. We watched Dethwater and I was hooked. This show is great for any fan Metal fan or not. Now I have introduced to a lot of my friends. Even ones that can’t stand heavy metal, and they can attest to the greatness of this show. Five friggin stars. Anyone, who’s already a fan of Adult Swim shows, should have no problem getting quickly attached to this show. Squizgar Squigelf Taller than a Tree, Toki Wartooth not a bumble be, William Murderface, Murderface, Murderface, Pickles the Drummer doodlie doo, ding dong doodlie doo… Nathan Explosion.

I normally don’t review things that haven’t been released yet because one usually can’t have an authoritative opinion on something s/he hasn’t personally watched, listened to, or read. However, in this case I’m going to make an exception, seeing as all 4 of these shorts have already been released. There are no surprises here. This will be like the 13th time that ‘Disorder in the Court’ has been released, and there’s already been a colorised version to boot! Yeah, it’s a great short and an undisputed classic, but due to how it’s one of the 4 public domain shorts, it’s been released over and over again. Sometimes overexposure can make even great things seem boring. Seriously, why did the powers that be think the world needed yet ANOTHER release of ‘Disorder in the Court’?

The other three shorts have also been released on various other discs. ‘Dizzy Doctors’ is already on a disc of the same name, ‘Pop Goes the Easel’ is on ‘Stooges and the Law,’ and ‘Calling All Curs’ is on ‘Cops and Robbers.’ They’re all great shorts, but why, if they insisted on continuing to do this colorised nonsense, couldn’t they at least have chosen some titles that haven’t been issued on DVD yet, like, say, ‘They Stooge to Conga,’ ‘I’ll Never Heil Again,’ ‘Uncivil Warriors,’ or ‘So Long, Mr. Chumps’? And why in the name of all that’s holy are they only putting 4 shorts on each disc now? The previous two colorised DVDs sold predictably poorly, and now they’re doing it all over again, setting themselves up for the exact same situation where a DVD will sell badly and the executives will conclude that that means there’s no widespread public interest in this material? Who is actually going to buy this disc when all 4 titles are already all available on other DVDs? At least the other colorised discs didn’t consist of ALL repeats.

The latest word on the street is that Sony has confirmed the rumor that, sometime in 2007, they’re going to start issuing all 190 shorts in boxed sets, properly, with no colorisation. Supposedly this disaster of a release is just to tide the fans over until the real goods hit the market. This is a pointless and self-defeating marketing move if I ever heard of one. How is one supposed to feel tided over while waiting on proper boxed sets with the likes of this? A disc meant to tide the fans over would consist of shorts not already available on DVD, and any way one slices it, all of the previous DVDs will be rendered pretty much useless and obsolete anyway when the boxed sets start coming out. I’d recommend waiting until next year instead of spending money on this.

Please stop releasing colorized Stooges shorts. Us Stooges fans want a collection of the team’s work with all the shorts remastered, in chronological order, and in black and white. We don’t want DVD’s that have shorts where the Stooges have the same jobs (ex. doctors, policemen, soldiers, etc.). We really, really want remasterd sound and picture quality, black and white shorts that are in chronological order. We don’t want four shorts on one disc. We want at least eight shorts per disc. Almost all the shorts are under 18 minutes. 18 minutes times 8 shorts equals 144 minutes. There are 97 Curly shorts. So you can have 12 discs with the last one having nine shorts.

I am not generally an Adam Sandler fan, but this film really surprised me. I liked it very much, and the music used brought back a lot of good memories. He plays a down on his luck wedding singer that is left at the alter, and when he meets Julia played by Drew Barrymore, sparks fly. I was very surprised by the chemistry Sandler and Barrymore have on screen. A romance with a generous amount of comedy mixed in is the perfect formula.

This was one of Adam’s breakthrough films before pointless blockbusters like “Waterboy” and “Big Daddy”. While those films have a few funny moments and are OK, this one is very cleaver and showcases Sandler as a human being rather than just some dumb hick or just some loud bastard.

“The Wedding Singer” is about Robbie Hart, an average guy, that lives a simple suburban life with a hot fiancée and a cool gig in the mid eighties. Life is great until his lady dumps him. He’s crushed and his career as a weeding singer goes down the toilet as he sinks into a depression that includes listening to The Cure. Sounds like a great depression. Anyway, a young girl named Julie (Drew Barrymore) helps him to get his life back together. The only problem is that she is engaged to a smug yuppie loser. So what’s going to happen. Well, like in most eighties comedies, the hero will try to win over the girl even if it takes the help of Billy Idol!

Not the most original story in the world, and the chemistry is only OK between Drew and Adam, but its really all the eighties jokes that make this film so very funny. People have niches and dress in styles. People dress up like “characters” like Madonna, Don Johnson, Boy George and even the guy from Flock of Seagulls. The combination of an awesome soundtrack and ’80s clichés, not to mention great acting (Steve Buschemi’s cameo steals the show) make the film a winner. Adam can really act like a normal romantic and this movie proves it. Too bad so many people prefer him as a moron. Comedy lovers and Sandler fanatics unite and buy this film.

We get the privilege of watching Lady Slane make her discoveries and the reaction to this by the family. Of particular interest is her great grand daughter is now on the cusp of making the same life choice that Lady Slane succumbed to.

Based on the novel by Vita Sackville-West, “All Passion Spent” we see a lot of Vita’s real life parallels. The screen adaptation is by Peter Buckman. This film has that BBC quality.

Wendy Hiller and Harry Andrews deliver haunting and very, very beautiful performances in this, one of the best films I have ever seen. It is all–every bit of it–utterly charming, provocative, true, beautiful, and brimming with life in every scene.

And the reviews that speak of Vita’s feminism, though true, miss entirely the point that this film is as completely relevant socially, emotionally, and spiritually now as it was in Vita’s 1930’s.

The film is not glitzy, or fast, or loud, but it is one of my few all-time favorite films. Like the rest of them, it seeps into one’s soul like wine falling slowing through water, eventually coloring one’s whole view of life. You will not be quite the same once you have given yourself the gift of All Passion Spent.

From the reviews, you would think that only girls should watch Dora. In fact, I see very few reviews for any of the Dora videos mentioning sons. This surprises me.

My almost 3 year old son has loved the Dora shows and videos since he was just months old. Early on, I’m sure it was the colors, the repition and music that attracted him. Now he loves the adventure, the language, the lessons and characters. My husband often speaks Spanish to my son, but he retains more from Dora. He loves that Dora can be a princess, a pirate, a musician, a balloonist, an explorer, a friend or anything else she happens to be that day.

I hope that other parents of boys are not avoiding Dora based on the gender of the main character. That would be a shame. These videos provide such good lessons (both moral and educational) that should apply to children of any gender.

Hooray for Dora!! My son is all boy, and we love her at our house!!

My 17 month old daughter is in love with Dora. We have not stopped playing this Dora DVD since we bought it. For whatever reason, this particular Dora adventure has her glued to the screen. She loves helping Dora along the way and the songs have a good beat to them. I highly recommend this DVD.

I think this video probably needed to be 2 hours instead of 1. The coverage of Freud’s major contributions/concepts is much too superficial–it also presumes previous knowledge. For example, “libido” is mentioned but the video fails to describe what Freud meant by that term. His conceptualization of personality (i.e., the id, ego, and superego) is never mentioned! Some interesting details about Freud’s personal life, but the video fails to capture his theories and the controversies surrounding them.

This is a very interesting look at the life of Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis and, to some, the “doctor of love.” It is, of course, a look at his life and not an analysis of his work and ideas - while it certainly mentions many of Freud’s theories, ideas, and publications, it does not go into an in-depth analysis of them. I tend to think of Freud as this wildly successful, albeit controversial, psychologist lounging back in his office chair with a cigar, nodding toward a patient lying on a nearby couch, and generally basking in his great fame and accomplishments. This is not really the case, however, as this video makes clear.

I knew nothing about Freud’s childhood. After his birth, he lived in a one-room abode with a father in his early 40s, a mother in her early 20s, and two step-brothers as old as his mother. In the next few years, six more children would be born, but when the family moved to Vienna, Sigmund enjoyed the comforts of his own room and a doting the less precocious children were denied. Born a Jew, the anti-Semitism around him spurred him on to ever greater efforts at learning, and before entering medical school he spoke six languages and had been recording his dreams for a number of years. He wanted to do research, but a quota on Jews in this field made this impossible; he decided to become a doctor, and he chose to work in the field of nervous disorders primarily because such doctors were in short supply and he was anxious to establish himself and marry his sweetheart (the courtship was an interesting one characterized as exceedingly Victorian). Early in his career, he experimented with and recommended the use of cocaine for mentally afflicted patients, but this work with a drug he did not yet recognize for its deadly addictive qualities didn’t exactly win him the acclaim he yearned for. His much more fertile ideas on the nature of hysteria and similar disorders of the mind as stemming from physical causes were changed during a period of study in France. When he opened his own practice, he made use of hypnotism among more traditional methods; soon thereafter, he began using “the talking treatment” and observed that his patients almost always seemed to trace the origins of their problems back to some traumatic childhood experience involving sex - be it real or imagined. From this work would come his ideas on the Oedipus complex and, much later.(…) At the age of 40, Freud decided to analyze himself using free association techniques, the results of which would form a large part of his most famous book On the Interpretation of Dreams (which sold all of 300 copies in its first six years).

The video then traces Freud’s attempts to establish psychoanalysis as a recognized science. Many of his colleagues derided him as a dirty-minded man obsessed with pornography, and his Jewish heritage also worked against him among the establishment. Not until the 1920s would he become a household name. By this time, he had put forth his ideas on the death drive among men, having seen his worst visions of man’s unconscious unleashed by World War I. His pessimism about man’s inner nature grew in his final years, culminating in Hitler’s rise to power and his own dangerously-delayed escape from Vienna. Bouts with oral cancer cursed Freud with great pain in the final decade of his life, but he never gave up his addiction for cigars.

The most interesting information presented here centers upon Freud’s own neuroses, with the cigar addiction being just one of many. He also suffered from a paranoia about travel, gave up sex after the birth of his sixth child despite the fact he argued that any restrictions upon a husband’s sex life (including birth control) would make him neurotic, and tended to faint in the presence of talented male friends such as Carl Jung, with whom he bitterly parted ways after Jung’s ideas began to diverge from Freud’s own insistent theories. This was a complex man who broke down the barriers between man and his formerly repressed drives. While his ideas on psychoanalysis were already beginning to be rejected or changed before his death in 1939, he continues to tower over the field of psychology and wields immense influence over popular culture still today. A study in contrasts, the life of Sigmund Freud makes for a fascinating documentary.

If you watch these dvd’s you will notice that while watching the English version, ocasionally it will automatically change to Japanese…I was like what the heck is this about. I thought I had defective dvd’s. I wrote the company that released them and this is what they told me. The versions that were sent to them were in bad shape and much shorter than what is actually on each disc the way they are now. When they switch from English to Japanese, this is becuase these were added scenes that were originally not there when they were received. Since these shows are from the 60’s, and obviously these are not in production any more, there’s no way they can loop the new scenes.

So you pretty much just have to take them as is and enjoy them. These scenes were not contained in the original US release apparently.

I’d reather have them longer with Japanese than shorter, chopped up versions.

PS Volume 2 is set to be released November 7th 2006. We need to remember that this series is 40 years old this year. Not everyone can afford or maybe some studios are just too cheap to spend 10 to 20 million dollars on restoration of prints al la George Lucas with Star Wars.

We have to take it for what it is.

Just enjoy them. We’re lucky that we have something decent on dvd. I know the audio problems are bad, but trust me, if the original makers were around, then maybe they could work their magic and fix the issue. But I’m sure Ultraman has several owners now and are not filthy rich to restore these things. Or are they?

It’s great to be able to watch these shows again! I lived in Japan in the mid-to late 60’s and obviously watched Ultraman then along with all the other great Japanese TV shows of the time. I never thought I would be able to see Ultraman again-but even at 45+ I still enjoy watching them. Yes I suppose I’m going through a second childhood–but who care I’m going to enjoy every minute of this boxed set!! Highly recommended to kids today-even with all their high tech distractions kids really seem to like this show.

I really enjoyed this film, based upon the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, “The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love” by Oscar Hijuelos. With its sexy, pulsating, and rhythmic soundtrack, as well as the strong performances by the entire cast, this film is highly entertaining.

The events in this sharply stylized period film take place in the nineteen fifties, at the height of the mambo dance craze. Two young Cuban musicians, brothers Cesar (Armand Assante) and Nestor Castillo (Antonio Banderas), flee Cuba after a love triangle takes a potentially deadly twist. The love sick Nestor leaves behind the love of his life, the beautiful Maria Rivera (Talisa Soto), now married to his romantic rival.

The brothers arrive in New York, where Cesar meets the lushly sensuous, blonde bombshell, Lana Lake (Cathy Moriarty). They eventually marry, while Nestor, still carrying a torch for Maria, meets the sedate and quietly pretty Delores Fuentes (Maruschka Detmers), whom he eventually marries. Given a helping hand by fellow Cuban, Desi Arnaz, Sr. (Desi Arnaz, Jr.), Cesar and Nestor shortly become stars of the dance halls and clubs they play, where they are christened the “Mambo Kings”.

Unfortunately, Cesar’s dreams are not necessarily Nestor’s dreams and conflicts arise. The brothers also run into trouble when Cesar’s arrogance pits him against a musical syndicate that rules the clubs and dance halls with an iron hand, derailing their careers for a time. Moreover, Nestor’s marriage is seriously troubled, because of his obsession with his lost love. Still, no matter what, there is always the music.

Armand Assante gives an over-the-top, manic performance as Cesar, the older brother whose arrogance and single-minded ambition nearly alienates his brother. He over-acts the part, making his character almost cartoonish, at times. It is as if he were drowning in his own machismo. Still, he infuses the role with a certain energy that makes him strangely compelling. Moreover, the guy can really dance!

It is the bittersweet performance by Antonio Banderas, however, that takes one’s breath away. Antonio Banderas infuses the role of the artistic, younger brother, Nestor, with a poignancy, sensitivity, and sensuousness that is remarkable. He handles the role with a delicacy that nearly brought tears to my eyes. Banderas makes the viewer feel Nestor’s pain, so palpable is his anguish over his lost love, Maria. When he sings his ode to her, “”Beautiful Maria of My Soul”, the viewer is transfixed, so beautifully does he sing it.

Look for a cameo by the late Tito Puente. The late Celia Cruz also appears in this film, cast as Evalina Montoya, a popular club singer. The viewer is in for a treat with these two salsa greats doing what they do best. It was also somewhat eerie to see the role of Desi Arnaz, Sr. played by his real life son, Desi Arnaz, Jr., as the resemblance is so remarkable, right down to the accent. Special note should also be taken of Roscoe Lee Brown’s silky performance as club impresario Fernando Perez.

The film captures the flavor of the nineteen fifties, when night clubs were synonymous with night life, and big bands still held sway. I particularly enjoyed this film, because my parents emigrated from Cuba. Having grown up in New York City during the nineteen fifties, this film holds a certain amount of nostalgia for me.

Definitely on my top 10. The Mambo Kings has several things that make it an all time favorite. First, it uses the medium to pull you in an give you the feeling you are part of the moment. The sets, costumes, cars, and music are detailed to perfection. Especially the music! Cameo’s by the great singers of Cuban music make it real. Celia Cruz and the late Tito Puente are awesome! The theme song is beautiful and nothing less than haunting. Check out fantastic soundtrack.

Second, the plot takes some unique twists and turns. The relationship between two brother seems formulaic at the beginning and then both characters acquire unexpected depth and traits. I believe that both Antonio Banderas (this was his first Hollywood film) and Armand Assante give their best performances to date.

The new DVD release is to be avoided. I pre-ordered this a couple of months ago and upon arrival, was totally dissapointed by the quality. It’s not 16×9 as advertised. It’s not even full frame as it was filmed. Very poor transfer from an old answer or release print. Poor sound, doesn’t even look good with a 1080 upconvert DVD player.

I have this film on VHS tape. Three years ago I transfered it to DVD. My VHS tape copy is far superior to this release.

In short, it sucks…….

This movie provided Liz Hurley with her big break. Soon after this, Dennis Potter snapped her up for the lead role in the BBC adaptation of Christabel Bielenberg’s ‘The Past is Myself’. She became Hugh Grant’s girlfriend and the rest is history. She transformed herself physically during her twenties, which is why some viewers have had problems identifying the occasionally nude actress that appears here as the very slim Liz Hurley they now know.

For me, ‘Aria’ was the classical music community’s response to the rise of MTV and the pop video. Directors like Ken Russell and Nick Roeg wanted to show us that opera could be equally colourful and sexy, even if you couldn’t dance to it. And they proved their case, to my mind.

But like a pop video, you wouldn’t want to watch this too often. There’s no substantive connection between each of the videos, so you end up feeling much the same as you would after a 90-minute immersion in MTV.

In an initial review I wrote for the first volume of this series, I presented Chrono Crusade as no more than an action-oriented comedy that dealt lightheartedly with some rather controversial stuff. While I believe that was okay for the time, I’ve since learned, in watching the entire anime, otherwise. Yes, this series will make you laugh, especially at the antics of the two main characters. And about half of the of the twenty-four episodes are light-hearted, while the others are surely dark. Of those twelve more serious episodes, the last four or five are as as heart-wrenching as Aztec sacrifices. But, so as not to confuse, the constant contrasting emotions have no effect on the anime itself. The happy-go-lucky stuff happens early on, mainly to introduce the characters or the settings, or whatever, and the darker stuff comes later, during the main story line.

The story itself follows Sister Rosette Christopher, a spunky girl great at destroying things, and her trusted partner-in-mischief Chrono, a peaceful, child-like devil. Both of them work for the Order of the Magdalene, a fearless group of exorcists and devil-slayers. Early on in the series, Rosette and Chrono are sent on a collection of unrelated missions, either to destroy threats from devils or to save those in danger. In one of these missions, they meet Azmaria, a girl with a tremendous power to heal, yet a power she’s unable to control. They take her under their wing. Soon after, the real story begins. Chrono and Rosette’s histories are revealed, and the two main enemies, Aion and Joshua, Rosette’s brother, begin their quest to start the apocalypse. This ignites a war between man-kind and devil-kind, and though the sides are sometimes blurred between the two, it’s clear that the final outcome wanted by Aion is one that may be inevitable. Still, help for the good-guys comes from odd places, including a pagan jewel-witch who has the power to materialize creatures from gemstones, and a horde of devil/hell-police, who want to keep the order in place, the way God had intended.

By the end, I, personally, was floored. Not only did I like the idea of devils with morals, but I enjoyed the fact that Chrono Crusade was fearless in its attempt to present a great story, controversy or not. It uses stories from the Bible, as well as religious mysticism, and mixes things that would be considered sacrilegious in our society, such as the love between a human girl and a devil. Even with that controversy, though, the message of this series is deep, and one that tells the story of human history and how many mistakes we have made over the years.

And of course, there is the actual climax of Chrono Crusade, which I will admit brought more than just one tear to my eye.

Chrono Crusade ranks close beside Last Exile as one of GONZO’s greatest anime. The story ranges from moronic to dead serious, and pulls this off well by presenting a message and a theme, something that’s uncommon in anime meant for laughs. The ideas in this story, though rich with controversy (if anime were as mass marketed as Harry Potter, this would be a series in the burning pits), are unique for an anime, and the ending is one of the best I’ve seen, especially when you consider the history of anime endings. I recommend this box set to anyone who wants to see something unique and worth multiple viewing, because that’s exactly what Chrono Crusade is.

I’m really surprised at some of the negative reviews surrounding this series. My wife and I just finished the collection, and we were both blown away. If you’re at all into Catholic mysticism, exorcism, angels, and demons, all with a good helping of Japanese existentialism, you’ll love this series. If you want mechs, you’re on the wrong page. Chrono Crusade has its silly, humorous moments, but by the time you’ve gotten to the end, you’ll find yourself moved, unsettled, and sad that it’s over. It’s worth seeing, and the five-disc collection is an excellent value.
