Released on Christmas Day 1947, “Daisy Kenyon” has become a favorite among Joan’s devoted followers. Because “Daisy Kenyon” is just as beautiful as any of Joan’s other Oscar-nominated roles. But, perhaps overshadowed by that other hugely successful film coming out in ‘47, Possessed, at the time of its release “Daisy Kenyon” had little fanfare. Unfortunately, up until now this movie has never been released on DVD (not even on VHS or the dreaded LaserDisc!) And since this film isn’t licensed to Turner it has never even been shown on TCM (good luck trying to find anything halfway edible on AMC or the even more obscure Fox Movie Channel.) So, for the passed 60 years “Daisy Kenyon” has been left in a rather befuddled and unreachable halfway point; somewhere between purgatory and paradise.

The tagline for this classic 20th Century-Fox picture is: “I don’t belong to any man.” And doesn’t that describe Daisy Kenyon perfectly; not to mention the always in-control Joan Crawford…! Both Joan and Daisy set their own rules and made certain that all the boys in their lives always followed them! Joan portrays the lead title-role of Daisy Kenyon astutely. Because she is so believable in this dramatic masterpiece. And, this time Miss Crawford’s character, Daisy, has both experience and intelligence on her side!

The film is in black and white and is 100 minutes long. (BTW the picture color might seem rather obvious since 99.99% of Miss Crawford’s movies from the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s are not in color. However, I always like to state this because there is an entirely new generation of younger fans who may not realize this!) And Joan’s costars include: Dana Andrews (as Dan O’Mara) and Henry Fonda (as Peter Lapham.) The movie also includes cameos by Walter Winchell, Leonard Lyons, John Garfield and Damon Runyon! Also in smaller parts is Ruth Warrick (as Lucille O’Mara) and Martha Stewart (as Mary Angelus). (And, no, that’s not the same Marta Stewart that makes apple pie and hocks tablecloths at Bamberger’s basement.)

Don’t you just love the cover of this DVD! It looks almost exactly like the classic movie poster that was originally used. Joan looks so beautiful and youthful. I’ve added some more pictures of Joan from this wonderful picture, just click this link !

I especially love this film because it’s totally a throw-back to Joan’s M-G-M days. If you enjoyed Joan in Sadie Mckee, Chained or Forsaking All Others (1934) you will adore her in “Daisy Kenyon!” Daisy is a career woman (working as a commercial artist) and takes up with married Dan O’Mara. She loves Dan and hopes to marry him one day. Dan finally divorces his wife just as Daisy says “I do” to Peter, a man who although is kind, does not ring Daisy’s bell!

These are some of Miss Crawford’s comments on “Daisy Kenyon” (from the book, Conversations With Joan Crawford:) Daisy Keyon -if Otto Preminger hadn’t directed it the picture would have been a mess. The script was a cliché. The usual triangle helped out by two very handsome young men, Dana Andrews and Henry Fonda. It came off. Sort of.

Trivia:

* Joan had an older sister named Daisy, who passed away as a very young child (before Joan was born.)

* One of the scenes is filmed in the famous NY nightclub, The Stork Club.

* Even though Joan was under contract with Warners, she went out on loan to 20th Century-Fox because she fell in love with the script for this film.

* Besides Joan’s earliest uncredited roles, silent films & very early “talklies” from the mid-20’s & early 30’s, up until this DVD, Joan’s only major motion pictures that have never been released on any format commercially, in any country, ever include: No More Ladies (1935,) Daisy Kenyon, This Woman is Dangerous (1952) & Female on the Beach (1955.)

* Contrary to popular belief, Miss Crawford participated in almost no promotion for this movie.

* The movie was based on the book, by the same title, by Elizabeth Janeway.

* “Daisy Kenyon” was retitled “Entre El Amor y El Pecado” for the Spanish release, which means: Enter the Love and the Sin.

* The plot/subplot for both “Daisy Kenyon” and Joan’s forgettable flop “When Ladies Meet” were both similar to her classic “The Women.”

* This is Joan’s last movie she ever made with that stereotypical-MGM love-triangle storyline.

* Both of Joan’s first 2 real-life divorces were constantly in the society papers and just as dramatic as the proceeding in “Daisy Kenyon.”

* Joan wore a similar fur coat in her defining picture “Mildred Pierce,” although that one was more theatrical.

* Joan wore a similar looking veil as Daisy (during the court scenes) when she divorced her second husband.

* This is one of Henry Fonda’s only films that he does not take first billing in.

* This is Henry Fonda’s last studio-system movie for 20th Century-Fox.

* In 2005, “All My Children” veteran Ruth Warrick, at the age of 89 was the final main cast member of “Daisy Kenyon” that was still alive.

* Griff Barnett, Jeffrey Sayre & William H. O’Brien (who all played bit/uncredited roles in “Daisy Kenyon”) each had small parts in Joan’s other ‘47 film “Possessed.”

* This is Joan’s final film for more than a year; she can be seen next with a new cropped hairstyle in “Flamingo Road.”

This is an extremely far-reaching film for both film historians and Joan Crawford admirers. “Daisy Kenyon” can he credited for helping to pave the way for other strong leading female characters on the silver screen. This is one of the first films that showed the modern American woman who was totally independent. It wasn’t one of those typical sappy love triangles that Joan was famous for (although the plot was similar.) Daisy Kenyon called all the shots. If I had to use just one word to describe Daisy Kenyon I would use “control” because she was in constant charge. This is also an important film for anyone who follows Miss Crawford’s 50+ year career because “Daisy Kenyon” marked a point when Joan was just banging ‘em out. As you may know, throughout Joan’s career she always tended to go through stages (the shop girl, the flapper, the scream queen, etc.) But during the time of “Daisy Kenyon” Joan was just making some extremely high-quality dramatic films. Of course you know that after “Daisy Kenyon” she also had “Flamingo Road,” The Damned Don’t Cry, “Goodbye, My Fancy” and Harriet Craig.

If you know just one fact about Miss Crawford (heaven knows there has been so many untruths written about her,) you know that she was always the consummate professional; and this film is no exception! By the way, some more of Joan’s movies will also be out in February: The Joan Crawford Collection, Vol. 2 (A Woman’s Face / Flamingo Road / Sadie McKee / Strange Cargo / Torch Song)! Please always remember that there never was a finer actress or a star that was more kind-hearted than the one and only Joan Crawford!

I think this film and 1947’s “Possessed” are my favorite two films from the middle part of Joan Crawford’s career.

I realize Fox did make lots of great film noirs in the 1940’s, but they’re just about all on DVD now, and so now Fox is labeling some movies as film noir that really aren’t at all, probably partially as a marketing strategy. Film noir usually involves a situation that must end in tragedy of some kind and involves characters that are all unlikeable and unsympathetic. This is really not the case here. This film is a great vehicle for Joan Crawford, though. In fact, I can’t imagine any other actress in the lead. Daisy Kenyon (Joan Crawford) plays a commercial artist who is the strong independent type. She has fallen in love with a married man of means (Dana Andrews) who has a clingy and emotionally unstable wife (Ruth Warrick) and a couple of daughters that he knows he will lose access to if he gets a divorce. In other words, he is permanently married and he and Daisy’s relationship is going nowhere. Enter Peter Lapham (Henry Fonda), a widower recently back from World War II. Both men love Daisy, but only one can “do right” by her - Peter. Unfortunately, he is not the man she loves.

The resulting love triangle, the idea of any of this being particularly scandalous even to someone aiming for public life, and in particular the then quite backwards divorce laws of the state of New York might seem quaint to a modern audience, but the private situations and emotions of the characters still ring true. Who does Daisy choose in the end? The man willing to give her up. I’ll let you watch the film and find out which of the two men that is.

James Garner turns in a great performance in this pair of western spoofs, although not related to his popular Maverick role both films are similar in their comic style and Garner is just as crafty as his Bret Maverick character. In Support Your Local Sheriff, Garner is a slick drifter who accepts the job of sheriff in a small Colorado town and uses his wits and quick draw to clean up the town and win the heart of a beautiful yet clumsy lady. In Support Your Local Gunfighter, Garner is a kept man with a bad habit of losing money to the roulette wheel. He then uses another drifter to pretend to be a famous gunfighter in a scheme to make some quick money. Yet when the real gunfighter shows up it is up to Garner to save the day. The two films are quite similar and are companion films with many of the same actors and a similar plot involving a sly stranger who is able to win over the town and a lovely lady with his charm and ability to out think his opponent. I bought this combo pack for a great price; both films are very funny and are classic western spoofs along the lines of Blazing Saddles only G Rated. A great buy for any fan of James Garner or Westerns in general. Just make sure you get both films in this neat combo and save a few bucks while your at it.

These two films are as good as it gets when it comes to comedy westerns. The only problem is the colors on Support Your Local Sheriff are somewhat faded and too red. The print is clear without any scratches or other defects. It’s just that the colors haven’t aged well. I watched it on several sources so it isn’t just the color being off on a particular TV. I still found it quite watchable. It was at most a minor annoyance.

And the fifth and final season of the classic spy spoof “Get Smart” focuses on that new complication for bumbling spy Maxwell Smart and his new wife 99. The baby focus is a bit tiresome at times (even if it does produce the Chief and Larabee babysitting!) but it’s still a pretty hilarious series with plenty of long-running gags and catchphrases, and an endless stream of bizarre conspiracies to destroy the free world. Would you believe…?

Max and 99 are sent to rescue a professor who is being kept under an unbreakable glass dome, but as they’re being chased off the premises, 99 drops a bombshell on her husband — she’s pregnant. Max is so elated by this that he not only runs through a brick wall, but blabs his secret identity to a nearby reporter, putting the mission in jeopardy.

And of course, their impending parenthood becomes a part of the new missions — defeating Ironhand with Operation Baby Buggy Switch, dealing with a bunch of explosive dolls, and Max must even “marry” a KAOS black widow on his anniversary. Worst of all, a mixup with some trenchcoats causes Max and 99 to end up heading for a KAOS clinic when 99 goes into labor — not to mention going up against the deadly Simon the Likable.

Among the other weird cases: the treasure of C. Errol Madre, wounded gangster who thinks he’s a doctor, serial killings with banana peels, rapid aging, acid in the Washington water supply, inexplicable weather changes (snow in Miami?), a wax museum with very lifelike residents, a house of crazy gothic secrets, attempting to keep an informer safe from the Exterminator, a devious 99 doppelganger, security leaks via pseudo-Roman spas, spying plants, a descendent of Christopher Columbus who has inherited the United States, and Max going undercover as the worst butler the Bulmanian Embassy has ever seen.

“Get Smart Season Five” isn’t quite the best that the series had to offer, and the baby focus is a bit offputting at times (since it’s so far removed from the World of Spies). But considering this series had been running in the same basic groove for four seasons before it, it’s still remarkably fresh and funny — still has plenty of movie spoofs (”Witness for the Prosecution,” “Spartacus,” “House of Wax,” “Treasure of the Sierra Madre”), classic running gags, and general strangeness.

Along the way, there are plenty of bizarre plots by the evil KAOS (being attacked by a wax werewolf!) and bizarre puzzles that Max and 99 somehow work out, often by putting themselves in comical danger, ranging from Vincent Price’s hallucinogenic plan (”Of course! Everyone will think it’s a folk rock festival!”) to very odd plastic surgeries. But there are also some more down-to-earth problems that the newlyweds face, such as Max and 99 having to leave their babies in the care of Chief and Larabee.

And the dialogue and comic relief are absolutely priceless (”That’s just what we’ve been waiting ten years to hear. Larabee, You got your tape recorder?” “Right here, Chief. When do you want me to turn it on?”), and the babies don’t stop the hysterical physical comedy (Max’s inability to buttle).

Don Adams is the heart of the series, with his quirky face, nasal voice, odd body language and confident catchphrases (”And loving it!”), and while he’s still a bumbler as an agent he makes a great dad. Barbara Feldon gets to play out some pregnancy cravings and insecurities (”Fat fat the water rat!”) while still sometimes doing some solid agent work (the ultimate working mom! She saves the free world then goes home to babies).

Edward Platt is just wonderful as the long-suffering Chief, and Bernie Kopell gets in a last laugh as the delightfully uptight villain Siegfried — and with Max being more competent, Robert Karvelas’ Larabee takes over as the resident clueless weirdo (”Larabee, confiscate that plant.” “I can’t do that, Chief. I’m not a priest!”).

It’s the final season and got a bit worn around the edges, but “Get Smart Season Five” is still a hilarious spoof-fest. Still Smart after all these years.

Okay ADV told me that indeed they do not have permission to release any more saint seiya episodes, but, fans can help out by contacting “Toei”. Toei is the one that grants permission to release saint seiya dvd’s. So please everyone email them, they have a website you can log on (I am not sure of the URL but you can google it). please people probably all of you spent lots of money gettign the 12 volumes of an UNFINISHED saga. and if this works out who knows we might even get the Hades saga and even better we might get the Zeus saga. please email them PLEASE not just for you but for everyone who is a true fan of saint seiya.

In volume 12 we finally arrive at the house of Virgo. In this house we see one of the most memorable battles of the entire Sanctuary saga. The series just keeps getting more and more intense the closer we get to the final fight.

With 5 episodes on each disc, a great dub and no editing I have been very impressed with ADV’s handling of this classic series. However, it now seems that this might be the final volume. How can they lead us on for 12 volumes and then ditch us a few episodes before any sort of closure.

I’d recommend this series to just about anyone, especially due to the low price and the overall great treatment, however if they don’t finish off the series then I’d say just get the japanese or HK dvds because there’s nothing worse than being ditched a few episodes before the end. So e mail ADV and let them know.

This DVD was awesome. I discovered the program while channel surfing, and it was so good, I bought TWO copies. The DVD is even better, because it gives you the option of seeing the entire documentary or you can watch just the amazing concert. The explanations of the history of the New Orleans sound was so clear and fascinating. If you love New Orleans Blues, buy this. You’ll love it. If you don’t know anything about New Orleans Blues, buy this. You’ll learn so much. If you don’t like New Orleans Blues, buy this anyway — you’ll change your mind!!

I was fortunate enough to grow up in an era that new and different music was king, while at the same time some of the best popular music was being produced. All this took was switching from AM to FM radio. Because of this, my ears always seek new music that feeds the mind and rocks the soul. I was familiar with the New Orleans sound, but not enough to really get into it.

Well, this DVD open my ears and educated me of how influential this music scene really is. The music just covers so much territory and crosses the boundaries of every known style of music. The musicians, are top shelf, kicking it really hard and having a blast doing it. It is hard not shake “dat ding” while watching these guys get down. The narration is superb that explains the roots of the music and than injects the live performances to further the point. A very well done DVD and well worth the purchase price. If you love music or better yet a musician, you owe yourself to buy the DVD.Make It Funky!

Shakespeare in Love is a film for anyone who loves art and literature

with a passion. Aside from being a beautiful love story, the film

itself is a “love letter” to the arts. I can only describe

it as a “golden” film, because that’s what I think of when I

picture scenes from the movie…pure gold. I love Shakespeare, and

the brilliant screenplay manages to make a flesh and blood person out
of such an enigmatic historical figure - it may not be real, but it’s
a lot of fun nonetheless. The acting is superb - Gwyneth Paltrow is
glorious, Judi Dench is fabulous, Geoffrey Rush is hilarious, and
Joseph Fiennes is the hottest thing to come along since his older
brother! I love the ending especially - Twelfth Night is my favorite
Shakespearean play, and the last line just speaks volumes: “For
she will be my heroine for all time, and her name will be Viola.”
Perhaps the best thing about the film is the way it blends comedy and
tragedy together in such a bittersweet way.

One final note: I too
was surprised that this film won Best Picture, because I also loved
Saving Private Ryan. Both films were cinematic masterpieces of very
different kinds, and both were equally worthy. I’m glad the Academy
shook things up a little.bfounded while the final credits rolled. Marc
Norman and Tom Stoppard must have loved their subject matter,
researched the period with zeal as well as having the ability to
create a moving romantic drama.

The whole thing was created
out of the barest glimmer of fact concerning Shakespeare’s life. It
focuses on the gap between his marriage in London as a young man and
his eventual return to London as a successful playwright. The theory
states that “suffering is the mother of creativity”, so
Young William must have had a great deal of hardship indeed. Hence,
the opportunity for a wonderful movie to be made.

A handsome
young Shakespeare is introduced to us during a black period of
writer’s block. He is portrayed as any other writer we could imagine;
poor, horny, suffering from professional jealousy and not particularly
respectable. He’s over-committed to two theatres and selling vaporware
for all he’s worth. Poorly named vaporware at that, “Romeo and
Ethyl the Pirate’s Daughter”.

But fate has more in store
for this hopeful scribbler than even he would dream. Enter stage left,
the love of his life, in the guise of an actor, shyly auditioning for
a part in his new play. (Shades of Blackadder here). He is immediately
taken by this youthfull stage strutter because of a seeming preference
for Bill’s work over that of the leading playwright of the day,
Christopher Marlowe.

This interest takes him to the actor’s
home, where Tomas Kent transforms himself into Viola De Lesseps the
refined daughter of a wealthy merchant. This magic act is only
possible because of the artful protection offered by Viola’s nurse and
part time confidant, played by Imelda Staunton. And as with Clarke
Kent, no one can penetrate the cunning disguise of Mr Thomas Kent,
except for a friendly ferryman. And it is this very ferryman that puts
William on the right path in his pursuit of the lady Viola.

And so we get the privilege of watching William Shakespeare give
birth to the Famous Romeo and Juliet as a counterpoint to his torrid
and dangerous affair with a woman betrothed to Lord Wessex; one of the
most influential and powerful men in the city. The ups and downs, ins
and outs of this relationship, and its eventual end, are all
delightful to watch as well as being grist for the mill of
Shakespeare’s future plays.

For anyone that has even a passing
familiarity with the Bard’s work or just likes a good romance, take
the time to enjoy this special movie. In fact, take a few times
because it gets better with every viewing.

I honestly did not know what to expect when I first sat down to watch “Shakespeare In Love.” Perhaps that was for the best, since this film teems with unexpected moments and twists, turning literary history upside down and giving it a clever and bawdy twist.

Gywenth Paltrow plays a young noblewoman who is expected to be demurely betrothed, but who wants none of the life ahead of her. She yearns for the theater, and, in her headstrong, ambitious drive, dresses like a boy to obtain a part in Will Shakespeare’s newest drama. Of course, the two fall in love (hence the title!) and their duplicity leads to plot complications that get more and more outrageous. Literary jokes abound, but you don’t need to know a whit about Shakespeare to enjoy this romp. This is a romantic comedy cloaked in Elizabethian times, an anachronism that is thoroughly satisfying.

Paltrow’s Viola is gutsy, intelligent, and torn, a portrayal that deservedly earned her an Oscar. Joseph Fiennes makes a lovable, bumbling Will Shakespeare. The two display a chemistry that brings the witty script to life and elevates this film to a level above most romantic comedies.

This film should appeal to a wide range of viewers - even those who hated studying Shakespeare in school.

After much hunting I found this DVD in the US… I wasn’t sure what to expect from a live action Discworld movie, I just couldn’t imagine that the humor could translate properly. In the end, it did and it didn’t.

A short Summary:

In the fantasy world of Discworld, their winter festival is called Hogswatch, which is ruled over by the Hogfather… a fat jolly man with tusks who doles out gifts to nice little children. An Assassin is hired to “take care of” the Hogfather, and he goes about it by invading the lair of the Toothfairy. To try to keep the world in order, Death puts on the Hogfather Costume and tries to sub in for the evening… meanwhile, Death’s grandaughter, Susan is off to figure out what happened to the Hogfather.

If you have read the book, then you know that you probably laughed so hard you cried. Though the movie is funny, it is not nearly so as the book. They remain fairly faithful to the book, cutting only where necessary. But if you have not read the book… then you will watch this film in puzzlement. There is a great deal of assumption by the filmmakers that the viewer is already aware of Discworld and how it works. The opening shot of Great A’tuin with the four elephants is shown but never explained. The Unseen university is baffling if you don’t already know about the wizards, and the Death of Rats makes no sense at all.

But if you HAVE read the book, you will be able to follow quite happily seeing the characters from your head pop into life.

The acting, though theatrical, is wonderful. The costuming is brilliant and the sets are strange and beautiful. Susan is a powerful yet likeable character. Death, though his mouth never moves, is one of the most human creatures in the film. Albert is a scream… you can’t help but love him.

Final summary: If you have read and enjoyed the book, this film is a must-see. If you have not read the book, then you might enjoy the movie… but you won’t “get” most of it because of the level of discworld knowledge you are assumed to already have.

Kiddie Rating - I will probably let my kids watch this (ages 6 and 10) there are a few murders but very little blood, and they are not overly graphic. I didn’t catch any profanity on my first watch through, there is of course no nudity. I would be more concerned of their lack of interest because I’m not sure if they are old enough to comprehend the humor of Death delivering presents dressed as a jolly fat man.

While awaiting the release of the Hogfather movie on DVD, I was amazed to run across the movie on the ION cable TV network on 12/23/07. I too expect that for those not familiar with the Discworld, it may be a little mystifying, but for those of us that are, the little details were wonderful. I particularly liked the rendition of HEX, complete with the “Anthill Inside” sticker and the little hourglass which popped out when it was processing. Getting a look at actual actors in costume playing Constable Visit and Nobby Nobbs, however briefly, was a treat–in fact, all the costuming and casting was very reminiscent of the way the Discworld is pictured in the Paul Kidby illustrations. The rendition of Susan and Bilious the Oh God inside the child’s painting on their way to the Tooth Fairy’s domain was excellent and very much as I had imagined it. Finally, Terry Pratchett himself makes a cameo appearance as the proprietor of the toy store where Death purchases the wooden horse to give to the young Albert. This movie really gives me hope for the “Light Fantastic/Color of Magic” movie which I understand is in the works–it shows that the Discworld CAN be translated to the live screen. My only negative criticism is that every time Mr. Teatime spoke with that weird voice of his, I was reminded of the Church Lady on Saturday Night Live–it may be that the actor just didn’t understand how this would sound to an American ear. However, all in all it was a really great effort and no Discworld fan should pass it by.

Oldboy has a Shakespearian tone as it depicts the tale of Oh Dae-su (Min-sik Choi), whose name means “he who can get along with people”. Oh Dae-su is on his way home after having been arrested for public drunkenness to celebrate his daughters birthday. However, Oh Dae-su never arrives to his home as he is kidnapped and imprisoned in a small room where his only contact with the human world is a television. During the time Oh Dae-su is caged someone murders his wife and he becomes the prime suspect for the murder. The questions that Oh Dae-su unsuccessfully attempts to answer while locked up is why revenge is being taken on him and who is seeking this cruel revenge. After 15 years Oh Dae-su is released from his torturous imprisonment, which leaves him confused and ragingly vengeful.

Chan-wook Park directs a brilliant cinematic experience that is full of well-written conspiring intrigues that will keep the audience in suspense. The suspense is initiated in the opening shot where a man is hanging over the edge of a roof top causing the audience to asks themselves–why is this happening? The suspense continues as new and mysterious clues appears, but apprehension does not leave the audience even after the end of the film as the final line echos in the minds of the audience. Park’s vision of revenge in Oldboy often depicts exaggerated violence that is well balanced with story as it is related to the themes of the film. However, this should serve as a warning to squeamish folks as the film is occasionally brutal and bizarre. Furthermore, the cinematography used in Oldboy vividly projects the emotional tone of the cinematic themes and characters. The characters are also superbly performed by an excellent cast, which will help the audience to experience a first class cinematic event.

Some films just do not allow themselves to fall into generalizations and these films pose conundrums when one tries to explain them. I’ve owned _Old Boy_ for a number of months now, but for some reason or another I had been able to make myself sit down and watch the film. For some reason I thought it was a horror film and being that I generally do not care for horror films I let this one sit on the sidelines while I watched other films. However, I was finally inspired to watch this film when my Korean office partner told me how much she enjoyed the film, been amazed by Choi Min Sik’s acting, and how long the film stuck in her head after watching it. Trusting my friend’s taste in film, last night I finally settled down to watch the film and similar to my reaction with other films that I had underestimated, I wondered: Why the heck had I had not watched this film earlier?

The film begins with a drunken Oh Daesu, Choi Min Sik, sitting in the police office. He is a noisy drunk heaping abuse on the police officers and constantly trying to urinate on the floor. He tells the police to let him go because it is his daughter’ birthday, but when his pleas fall on death ears, he becomes even more recalcitrant to remain calm in the police office. Eventually Daesu’s friend comes to pick up his inebriated friend. However, while talking to Daesu’s daughter on the phone, the friend notices that Daesu is missing.

Daesu finds himself imprisoned in a room that resembles a cheap motel room. Fed a diet of dumplings and with a television as his only companion, Daesu will live for fifteen years inside of that small room. Occupying his time watching television, punching the walls, writing the names of all who might have had him imprisoned in that room, watching television, and carving a hole in the wall with a metal chopstick, Daesu grows older his youth withered away within that room. However, one day, he finds himself on top of a building finally free to hunt the individual who had imprisoned him. Daesu eventually makes a new friend in the personage of the young sushi chef Mido, Gang Hye Jeong, who for some reason seems to fall for Daesu as he consumes a live squid, who accompanies him on his search for the individual who ruined his life.

This is an extraordinary film. Choi Min Sik’s acting is top notch and one can really feel his anger and frustration inside of his prison. I won’t go into details here, but his performance during the final minutes of the film must be witnessed to be believed. The music is grand and the special effects are nicely done. The ant poking through Daesu’s skin is very creepy.

Working in the film business here in Los Angeles, it’s easy to understand my appreciation for all aspects of film production. However, there are many people who don’t unerstand the knowledge needed to get an image on film. Visions of Light is an incredible look into the world of cinematography, and the artists who have lit some of the most beautiful faces and film sets of the past 100 years. When I received this DVD, I wasn’t expecting any “added footage”, any “supplemental material.” I was simply expecting a DVD that was enjoyable, entertaining, and somewhat educational to watch. In a nutshell, it delivered beyond my expectations. This DVD contains wonderful clips from some of the most popular and most beautifully photographed films of the past century. It includes interviews with an array of cinematographers giving behind the scenes stories of their careers and films that they have shot. Technically, don’t expect this DVD to test your home system with incredible explosions and flawless picture quality. The clips are dated and the quality of sound and picture ranges from very good to incredibly dated. No one can expect a clip from 1930 to look THAT good, yet this DVD manages to present even the oldest clips in their greatest beauty. If you are a big fan of films, or you love the art of cinematography, or you simply have a curiousity on how films are made, then this DVD is a MUST HAVE. It is put together very well. It is incredibly entertaining, with wonderful film clips and interviews that will introduce you to the artists responsible for some of the greatest and most memorable films in history. Buy Visons of Light and it will surely be one of you favorite DVD’s to watch. Enjoy!

“Director of photography. The person in charge of lighting a set and photographing a film. Also known as ‘first cameraman,’ ‘lighting cameraman,’ or ‘cinematographer,’ he is responsible for transforming the screenwriter’s and director’s concepts into real visual images.” From Ephraim Katz’s Film Encyclopedia.

This collection of film clips and interviews with various DPs (director of photography) and camera operators such as Allen Daviau, William A. Frakeman, Haskell Wexler, and Nestor Almendros reveals their influences, the period during which they worked, what techniques were evolving, and anecdotes. Clips from about two hundred or so films are examined.

Yes, as Ernest Dickerson says, cinematography’s the way one responds to light. Initially, there was just a director and cameraman, the director in charge of the actors, the cameraman in charge of everything else. And the stationary cameras didn’t give them much to do, but of course that changed over time with the camera dollies and booms, and later, handheld cameras, made more effective by Steadicams, whose inventors won a special Oscar in 1977 in the technical field. But camera movement gave the DP greater ability to achieve his visual triumphs.

Other than the Katz quote, DPs were to tell the story visually and to make actors and actresses more handsome and prettier but to enhance special features. Actresses like Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo required special attention, but boy, did they sparkle! Dietrich’s cheeks were made narrower with the lighting used in Shanghai Express. And small wonder Harold Rosson made Jean Harlow prettier in Red Dust–he even married her (lucky guy!) after her husband Paul Bern committed suicide.

This takes a chronological history of lighting, from the silent era up to the late 1980’s, and puts it in context with the history of film. For example, the role of cinematography changed with the advent of sound. According to cinematographer John Bailey, the 1920’s were the golden age of cinematography because at the time, the camera was unencumbered by sound and all devices accompanying verbal dialogue storytelling. And when anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen came to be used, DPs had to find some way to use that extra space on either side, as they did with Lawrence Of Arabia, like the scene of Lawrence, having rescued Qaseem, who is greeted by one of the boys, riding towards him. And with the gradual independence from the studio system, previous errors such as flaring lenses were deliberately used as new techniques.

My favourite era is the film noir era, which borrowed from the German Expressionism of the 1920’s. Sparse lighting, slashes of light, dark shadows, dense rarified vocabulary of visual information, low angles define the characteristics of such films as The Killers, Out Of The Past, and Touch Of Evil. It’s stark black and wide, hardly any greys.

But other uses of dark or darkly lit techniques were shown with the candlelit sequence in Grapes of Wrath, a clip from Fat City, and the accurate capture of period dramas, where there was no electricity and so thus families relied on light from windows.

As for best uses of technique, the pure visual accident in In Cold Blood, where Robert Blake’s character is speaking to the chaplain about his father, and the light reflecting off the pouring rain on the window shone on Blake’s face, making it look as if he were crying.

This collaboration between the American Film Institute and Japan’s NHK Television is ideally for film students/buffs and for moviegoers of a more intelligent and inquisitive calibre, which I hope will comprise of enough people.
