Ivy is the new, crazy girl in school. Sylvie is the lonesome, geeky, rich girl. Once Ivy and Sylvie meet, they become pretty good pals. Sylvie invites her to ride home, she also invites Ivy into her house. She was making a deadly mistake.

Anyone can tell that something is definitely odd about Ivy, but she is charming to anyone around her. Sylvie’s sick mother is always depressed, but when Ivy comes along, Sylvie’s mother starts to love Ivy. Sylvie’s dad is really starting to get closer to Ivy, too. But Sylvie herself starts to regret the day that she talked to Ivy, because Ivy is starting to ruin her life. But Ivy wants to stay in Sylvie’s house, and whatever Ivy wants, Ivy gets.

This movie was really entertaining throughout the whole thing, and it always kept you wondering what horrible thing that the misuderstood Ivy was going to do next. You were always trying to understand Ivy, wanting to know more about this strong character. This movie was chilling and definitely sexy, and overall, it’s a good film.

Multi-talented, but heretofore little-known, director Katt Shea Ruben scored a brilliant, sudden and unusually highly successful stroke of genius in this highly erotic thriller about an under-privileged girl, newly admitted to a posh private school. Drew Barrymore brilliantly portrays Ivy, a sexy, street-wise and lethal Lolita that will do anything to fit in. Sara Gilbert portrays Cooper, a rich, smart, but misunderstood young feminist in search and need of a friend. Through Cooper, Ivy is ushered into a privileged world, and is instantly intrigued. Cooper’s father (Tom Skerritt) is a handsome TV newscaster; her mother (Cheryl Ladd) is a beautiful Beverly Hills wife. Yet tensions in the home run deep, providing license for malice that Ivy is quick to seize. With one quick seduction, Ivy sets off a chain reaction that makes ‘Poison Ivy’ one of the most provocative and erotic films, of the erotic thriller genre, filmed to date. If you somehow missed this gem, give it a look soon. It is one of those very rare films you can enjoy again and again! Excellent!

Our family is on a retro trip, having bought this movie, as well as The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The King and I, Willy Wonka, and Pete’s Dragon.

One of the reasons is that we want our 2 year old to experience the movies we grew up with, and the other is nostalgia.

Before watching this movie again recently, I could only remember that there was a flying car, a nice title song, and something about children being kidnapped. Watching it again for the first time, I discovered that I had forgotten most of the movie.

Caractacus Potts (Dick Van Dyke) is an inventor way ahead of his time, whose inventions don’t always work the way they are intended. If you think his name is weird, the female lead is Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), the daughter of a rich sweet manufacturer. This unlikely pair, along with his two kids and the wonderful car, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, are the star players in a story which starts out being about pirates, and ends up as a rescue mission. With comic support from Caractacus’ father, and a toy maker (Benny Hill, in an uncharacteristic G rated performance), they defeat the schemes of spies (kind of like Laurel and Hardy combined with Boris and Natasha), an evil Baron and Baroness, and a wicked childcatcher, to bring the story within a story to a predictable but entertaining end.

The scenery is breathtaking, especially the Vulgarian castle and surroundings, and since this is a 1968 movie, we can forgive the lack of finesse in the special effects, where the characters stick out like sore thumbs from the backgrounds, and wires can be seen attached to Professor Potts during a dance sequence.

It’s a little harder to swallow the concept of Truly Scrumptious running around on the beach dressed in tons of white cloth and coming up spotless, and her song about needing a lovely man is way too over the top and much too long. I will admit to skipping over that one.

The sing along feature is a nice touch, and catchy songs (other than the theme song) include “Me Old Bamboo”, “Toot Sweet”, my personal favorite “P O S H (Posh)”, and the nearly too sugary “Truly Scrumptious”.

Overall, this DVD is a refreshing family movie that you will watch over and over again.

This is one of the last big budget fantasy musicals before these films became just too expensive to produce. But Dick Van Dyke was at his zenith here and Sally Ann Howes was marvelous as well. Note that Ian Fleming wrote the original story and as a tribute there were two Bond actors in the cast. Gert Frobe as the King and Desmond Llewyn as Mr. Coggin. But I was very dissappointed to see this DVD released in the Pan and Scan format. I really don’t understand why MGM/UA remastered the film in the THX process and used a clean beautiful video transfer and doesn’t present the film in its original widescreen format. At one-third of the film is missing and its really difficult to watch this now considering I had owned the widescreen laserdisc of this film.

If you are buying this video for your little Elmo fan, think again. Elmo hardly appears at all; it’s mostly popular groups singing songs with a few muppets thrown in. I think it’s a good video, but it’s not really at my 12-month-old son’s level. He wants non-stop Elmo action, not people singing. This might be better for the 4-6 year old crowd.

This video is just horrible! I bought it because my 18 month old loves Elmo. Elmo is barely in the video! After 2 minutes, my toddler walked out of the room. It most definitely did not hold any interest for her.

I was never really interested in ’survival’ programmes on the context of the fact I live in a city/town and the only wilderness around here is a small family park with a small duck pond, not exactly the Rockies.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Man vs. Wild! Click Here

I found survival documentaries slightly dull, not the programmes themselves, but the fact that it was a topic/genre I could not connect with or relate to. Survival experts seemed to belong to another lifestyle incorporating hunters through to paranoid doomsday nuts (I was very naive about the subject). Survival programmes usually had a barrel-chested bearded guy with glazed twitching eyes trying to show us how to make a smoking-jacket out of some poor rabbit and some leaves for a cravat.

However, I really enjoy the Man vs. Wild ones. In fact, nowadays I like survival programmes a lot, and my naivety about them is now only ’slightly pathetic’.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Man vs. Wild! Click Here

I first watched this on the Discovery channel, though it was re-titled (or may have been originally titled, I am not too sure) Born Survivor. I slowly come to liked it, listening to Bear Gryll’s morbid stories of ‘travelers’ and ‘hikers’ meeting a doomed fate - he ALWAYS has a story to go with a poisonous plant, or a man-eating frog, etc. It was also funny watching him eat some gigantic insects to ’survive’ and whilst he is telling us that these are good for us he squirms and chews with disgust at what the poor creature tastes like. There is also a slight Steve Irwin OTT drama about Bear Grylls also. For example, watching him jump off a helicopter with a slight over dramatic “yee-hah!”

Man vs. Wild is survival in a dramatic, but fun way, glamourising environments that most of us city dwellers will seldom see, besides sitting on our sofas watching TV.

Grylls comes across as a likeable fella, he seems the type to be devoted to what he does, and I guess that’s what makes the programme work well. It must be great to have a job one enjoys as a hobby.

A lot has been said recently about ‘faking’ parts; I do not know why people would believe that these Man vs. Wild docs were 100 percent genuine. I spotted it first time I watched them, for example Grylls climbs a cliff type face yet the cameraman is at the top filming him climbing up, yet they are `all’ together.

The fuss over these programmes came about because of an uproar over ‘fake’ scandals on British TV (fake phone-in scandals, dodgy editing on a Royal family documentary trailer that made the Queen look like she walked out of a photoshoot in a huff when she was exactly walking IN to the photoshoot, and she wasn’t in a huff). Grylls came into the firing line, though his seem the most innocent. His programmes are fun and educational, if you really think that he can walk across most of Alaska and suddenly find an abandoned boat to rescue himself are slightly naive.

Another clear indication to viewers that certain parts are dramatized for artistic lisence is that each episode has a ‘plot’ arc which is as follows: Grylls gets stranded (albeit, purposely), Grylls has to get to a certain position covering many miles or/and obstacles whilst telling us how to accomplish it, and, finally, Grylls gets rescued or he escapes. It’s that simple. The fact that certain things were planned was not shocking. He is showing how things should be done in the wild. If it was 100 percent real what are the chances he could find every plant he wanted to show us (”This is poisonous, don’t eat it”) or get a camera crew up a cliff? I am sure Grylls, being one of the youngest to climb Everest and being an ex-TA SAS Special Forces soldier could do all the stuff he wants to do, but people forget that programmes are made with the restrictions of lawyers, health and safety people and, most importantly, the liability and insurance restrictions. I also read somewhere that during his time with the SAS he broke his back from a parachuting mishap and spent months recovering, so I think he has already taken enough risks in his lifetime without folks calling him a ‘fake’.

I am not writing this review to defend the guy, however, as a fan of the series I was worried that they would not make any more, which would be a huge shame in my opinion.

All in all, you have to take these programmes as they are - a dramatic calculated documentary about survival techniques that appeal to an audience that may not necessarily like ’survival’ documentaries. It is fun yet informative, and whilst most of us will never experience some of the things Grylls does, I guess there are loads of us who wish we could get off our lazy arrses and experience some of these journeys through the exotic and hostile environments that our diverse world has to offer.

If you like Bear Grylls stuff, you may also like Ray Mears programmes as well.

I’m a huge fan of the show, but this DVD disappoints. First, the episode list that is listed here on Amazon, isn’t what’s on the actual DVDs. There is no desert island episode, or Colorado Rockies for example. Plus the episodes that are on the DVD, well they aren’t the original broadcast edited versions…they’ve been re-edited. For example, there is no horse taming scene in the Sierra Nevada episode. Now while some may feel good about that, as they called some of those scenes fake, I think it’s a poor choice to not include the ORIGINAL episodes as they were meant to be.

And there are no bonus features on this disc, UNLESS you call “deleted scenes” from the Sierra Nevada episode (which the scenes in question are already included in the final cut of the episode anyway), and a quick montage of eating bugs as bonus material…then well, there really isn’t anything here worthwhile. Plus the menus are designed horribly. The DVD seems like it was authored in some guys living room using cheap software. Discovery should be ashamed of themselves. Plus whatever happened to releasing shows by season? That would of been much better as well.

2/22/09-Just a note that amazon has idiotically elected to COMBINED the reviews for the regular edition of “Spartacus” with the Criterion reviews–THIS review is strictly for the Criterion edition of the film on DVD NOT the regular edition. Amazon, I wish you folks would get this stuff straightened out.

If you’re a fan of the movie “Spartacus”, this is the version to get; the Universal DVD is as bare bones as they get with just the movie. The Criterion version looks great. The facelift the film received help return much of its luster. Kubrick later disowned his version of the epic Hollywood Sword & Sandal genre, but Kubrick brings much of his sensibility to bear; the fight sequences and epic vistas bring to mind Kubrick’s work on Paths of Glory and 2001. True, this isn’t a complete Kubrick picture; Kubrick had nothing to do with the screenplay and Douglas had all but cast the picture in collaboration with director Anthony Mann (dismissed after butting heads with Douglas one too many times).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Spartacus - Criterion Collection! Click Here

Is it Kubrick’s finest film? Well, frankly no it isn’t. It’s an interesting mishmash between Kubrick’s detached, ironic style and Hollywood glitz. Spartacus is Kubrick for people who don’t care for Kubrick’s detached style. It doesn’t measure up to Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001 or A Clockwork Orange although it does compare favorable to the much darker Paths of Glory.

Kubrick stated that his intent at the time was to subvert the cliches of the genre. As a result, Kubrick manages to reinvent a genre that was in danger of becoming a parody of itself. As a collaborative effort, Spartacus is a great piece of entertainment and far more sophisticated than almost everything else that came out of Hollywood at the time.

The transfer is beautiful with much of Kubrick’s bold use of color restored. The strong acting of most of the cast has always been a virtue of Sparatcus. The soundtrack has been meticulously transferred to 5.1 and Alex North’s beatiful score has never sounded so sweet, tragic and powerful before. The audio commentary is the same one that was on the laserdisc version. It provides additional understanding about the complexity of making an independently produced project like Spartacus. Kirk Douglas’ bold decision to produce the film himself (with Universal-International distributing)was a leap of faith in both the material and the talented director.

The second disc is stuffed with supplements that are found nowhere else. There’s two older interviews with Peter Ustinov, Jean Simmons plus one that Ustinov did in 1992 for the laserdisc edition. It’s delightful and he shares a number of funny stories about the picture. There’s also a text overview of Kubrick’s career and his involvement with the picture. Included also are sketches Kubrick made for the motion picture (artistically they’re nothing special but they do provide insight into Kubrick’s role in the visualization of the film). Included are some vintage newsreels and a promotional film originally made but unfinished for Spartacus that gives us a glimpse behind the scenes. The promotional film is missing it’s soundtrack (in fact, it might have been lost if not for the forsight of a private collector) and has much from North’s score. We also get to glimpse at Saul Bass’ wonderful title design sequence.

Criterion has been both praised and criticized for their DVDs and laserdiscs before. While they tend to be expensive, this is the complete package. Occasionally Criterion will release a package that isn’t up to their usual standards. Spartacus isn’t one of them. Robert Harris (Harris restored the film along with Vertigo)evidently was also involved in the transfer to DVD. If you want a spectacular transfer of the film, loads of extras about the making and background of the project from those involved, this is the set to pick up.

Long before Russell Crowe picked up his sword and battled corrupt Roman emperors, Kirk Douglas showed him the way in “Spartacus”. This epic 1960 film still ranks as one of the best performances in Douglas’s distinguished career, and it marked his second collaboration with famed director Stanley Kubrick. Even more than “Gladiator”, “Spartacus” is based on a real historical event, although it greatly exaggerates the actual history. Spartacus was a Roman slave in the first century AD who became a gladiator for the Romans, but then escaped and formed an enormous army (estimated at anywhere from 50,000 to 75,000) of freed slaves and gladiators. For the next year this army, under Spartacus’s leadership, terrorized the Italian countryside, until they were finally trapped and destroyed in battle with the still-powerful Roman Army. As an old-fashioned Hollywood epic, “Spartacus” doesn’t disappoint the viewer - there are epic battle scenes, high drama, and some great acting by several Hollywood legends. Interestingly, the film’s producers felt that the contrast between the slave-gladiators and their corrupt Roman masters would be given greater contrast if they cast British actors (Sir Laurence Olivier, Peter Ustinov, Charles Laughton) as the leading Roman characters, and American actors as the slaves (Douglas, Tony Curtis, Jean Simmons). All of the actors listed above shine in this film - Olivier simply drips with menace and hypocrisy as the great Roman General Crassus, who will stop at nothing to crush the slave revolt and bring the entire Roman Empire under his personal control. Laughton is delightful as Gracchus, a fat and somewhat corrupt, but also clever and freedom-loving, Roman Senator who loathes Crassus. Gracchus tries desperately to keep Crassus from becoming a dictator and destroying the freedoms of the Roman Republic. He fails, but nonetheless emerges as the sole Roman hero of the movie. Peter Ustinov steals every scene as the bumbling and craven owner of a gladiator training school who rescues Spartacus from certain death and makes him into a gladiator, then reluctantly helps Gracchus gain one last “victory” over Crassus by stealing Crassus’s new love interest (and Spartacus’s former wife) and taking her to freedom. As for the slaves, Douglas is superb as Spartacus - if the real Spartacus had been as noble and heroic as Douglas’s character, then Roman history might have been very different! (Historically, the real Spartacus and his slave army could have escaped from Italy, but instead went on a wild looting and stealing spree across the Italian countryside, thus eliminating any moral advantage they had over their corrupt Roman masters, and also throwing away their chance to gain permanent freedom. This led many sympathetic Romans to join the fight to crush the slave revolt, which was done, brutally). Jean Simmons portrays Spartacus’s “wife” (they’re never legally married) as a strong and honorable woman; and Tony Curtis is the cultured and well-educated, but also tragic slave of Crassus who escapes and becomes like a son to Spartacus. The scene near the end of the movie where Crassus forces the two men to fight to the death is especially poignant. In many ways this is a movie ahead of its’ time - it delicately but still decisively suggests that Crassus was bisexual and had a strong sexual interest in Tony Curtis’s character (which caused his character to escape from Crassus’ estate). In terms of scope, emotional impact, and visual splendor it’s hard to top this film. Anyone who’s interested in the golden age of Hollywood films and enjoys watching some legendary actors in their prime will love “Spartacus”!

“The Brain That Wouldn’t Die” has a very special place in my heart. I first saw photos from it in “Mad Monsters” magazine back in the early 1960s, and was fascinated by the image of a woman’s head kept alive in a pan. To an eight year old boy hooked on trashy horror movies, this was “it”! I finally saw “Brain” a few years later on late-night TV, and was hooked! Flash-forward to the 1980s, where, to my delight, I had discovered that this sleazy little film had an enormous cult following. Is it the preposterous story? The cheesy lab set? (it looks like an empty rumpus room in a suburban home) The poker-faced performances? The battling strippers? The sleazy and infectious music “The Web”? (of which I am the proud owner of on a 45 single), or the pizza-faced, hunchbacked, cone-headed giant locked in the closet? It’s ALL of these things! This EC comic-like film is irrestible, a VERY guilty pleasure, like eating a 5-pound box of very cheap candy that makes your teeth ache. But just try and look away! It even dawned on me recently that the role of “Doris”, the disfigured and bitter cheesecake model, is rather like a grouchy Bettie Page, posing, in the words of mad doctor Bill Cortner, “for a bunch of neurotics”. I had the pleasure of talking to the late director Joseph Green on the telephone in 1989. I told him that “Brain” was one of my all-time favorite trash films, and he graciously said that he was pleased that I had such fond memories of it. “Fond” is an understatement! The picture quality on this DVD is brutally crisp, so you can enjoy all of the tacky sets, bad makeup jobs, and tawdry costumes. I may add that the long-missing footage, i.e. the bickering and battling strippers, and Leslie Daniel’s long, drawn out and VERY bloody death scene have been restored. You can KEEP “Dances With Wolves-the Director’s Cut”. Give me the restored “Brain That Wouldn’t Die”, which is MUCH shorter, better budgeted, and FAR more fun!

The rating isn’t for quality. This movie is one of the cheapest productions ever put on film. It literally defines schlock. The performances are so uneven, they come off as amateur night at the community theater. The cinematography is so bad, the day-for-night shooting slips in and out. Several scenes sound as if they were recorded in a tin can - and probably were. It’s more padded than Dolly Parton, and not as delightfully.

On the other hand, once you get past all that, this is one of the most unsettling movies ever made. If it were any more demented or disturbing, it would have to be directed by Tobe Hooper and rated “X”.

Psychopathic surgeon Jason Evers gets in a car accident speeding home to check on one of his failed experiments, and ends up decapitating fiancee Virginia Leith. He carries her head to the lab, and keeps it alive in a pan of his special serum, which he uses in limb-grafting experiments of so-far unsatisfactory results. Leith is extremely unhappy with being kept alive in her present condition, and even more so when she discovers Evers intends to murder the most beautiful woman he can find so he can put Leith’s head onto a new body. The serum Evers keeps Leith’s head alive with gives her telepathic power, and she develops an unsettling friendship with the failed experiment Evers was running home to check on in the first place - a hideously deformed giant golem in a locked closet, constructed of badly grafted-together tissues. The longer Leith is kept unnaturally alive, the more twisted and hateful she becomes, until she and the deformed monstrosity create an insidious alliance to kill Evers and his criminal assistant.

What makes this unbelievably cheap p.o.s. work is the conviction of the performers - Leith, especially - and the pervasive dementia, throughout. The soundtrack is incredibly effective, eerie beyond belief, often creeping up and down your spine. The visuals are genuinely unsettling in their very simplicity, to the point that you don’t even notice the rubber bald-cap on the hideous golem until repeat viewings. The violence is shuddery-awful, voyeuristically lingering on some of the most gruesome things imaginable - like a man’s arm being ripped out of its socket, and the camera’s following him through the house while he bleeds to death, the demonic head in the pan cackling delightedly throughout.

In short: cheap beyond belief, but more often than not incredibly effective. A must for all schlock horror afficionados.

You must have extended memory loaded to play. All copies are the same, so there is no use exchanging it. I was waiting on my second copy when I found a HD forum talking about the loading problem. The forum members determined the problem is the way the disk was authored. The disk looks for enough memory to support the BD Live content even when BD Live is not enabled. I tried the second copy I received and it would not load either. I updated my firmware and it still would not play. I put a flash drive in my Sony BD S350 and the second copy loaded fine. The bottom line is you need to add extended memory to load this disk, whether your player takes an SD Card, Flash Drive, or whatever.

As far as the movie goes, I would have given it 5 stars if not for this issue with the disk. It’s a great action flick with great special effects that look even more awesome on blu-ray. Excellent satire of blind alligence to government and military. I didn’t read the book, so I don’t have a problem with it not being true to the original story.

Highly recommended, just realize you will need to load extended memory to play.

I originally purchased this movie on laser disc, then DVD. There was little or no difference; however the Blu Ray provides clarity and sound that I feel was missed on the previous releases. Excellent movie.

A River Runs Through It is a haunting, powerful, nostalgic, drama directed by Robert Redford and based upon the autobiographical novella by Norman McLean. The film follows the McLean family growing up in rural Missoula Montana, raised on a steady diet of fly fishing and strict religious conservatism. The film embodies strong messages about the human condition and man’s struggle against himself and his external reality. Showcasing the incredible acting abilities of a young Brad Pitt, breathtaking cinematography, and a lush sweeping score by Mark Isham, A River Runs Through It is simply one of the finest coming of age family dramas ever created. Won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

The film opens with a shot of the river, and then a montage of sepia tone photographs of Missoula Montana in the 1930’s. Redford memorably recreates the period, in an ode to early America. Norman McLean is (voice over narration by Robert Redford) recalling the memories of his life since past. We learn that he and his brother Paul (Brad Pitt) were brought up by his strict Presbyterian preacher father (Tom Skerrit), in an extremely conservative environment, their father introducing them to fly fishing, and yet making no clear distinction between the two. Although it will come to serve as a counter point to their religious grounding (Freedom versus Restraint). Fly fishing serves as a metaphor for the way that each son will approach life, literally and symbolically. The River (Water) is a constant motif in the film that also serves as the never-ending physical and emotional challenge that will eventually shape their destinies.

We learn that Paul (Brad Pitt) is the rebellious younger brother, who “toughness came from somewhere deep inside of him”, while Norman (Craig Sheffer) is the more conservative brother. In an early scene, Paul further rebels and refuses to eat his food. We watch the boys grow up. Paul comes up with an idea to steal a rowboat and “shoot the chutes”, (ride the boat down the huge waterfall) everyone else chickens out when they finally reach the river, except Paul and Craig. Craig reluctantly goes along with his brother’s impulsive urges, for fear of looking afraid. Back at home, the boys are confronted by their distraught parents, who found out from another one of the boys parents. Their father tells them that they will go to church and pray for forgiveness. The next morning during lunch, Norman and Paul engage in a brawl that is a result of their two personalities clashing. We hear that was the only time they ever fought. Norman is accepted into Dartmouth College on the east coast, while Paul stays in Montana. This begins to foreshadow Paul’s inability to change his situation, while Norman has the means to seek his own path. Four years later, Norman returns home, Paul has taken a job as a Helena reporter, and developing as a fly fisherman. In their first fishing trip together, we learn that Paul has broken free from the structure of his father’s “four count rhythm” and developed a more improvisational technique called “shadow casting”. We begin to see how fly fishing will symbolize the course of Paul’s life.

Buy,Download, Or Stream A River Runs Through It! Click Here

Norman meets a pretty girl named Jessie Burns (Emily Lloyd) at the local fourth of July dance in an awkward encounter. He makes arrangements to see her again, and they meet Paul and his Indian girlfriend one night. Paul, has brought his Native American partner along, (a statement to the rebellion of his character) and causes some commotion at the bar. We meet Jessie’s brother Neal, who is visiting from California, an arrogant, self flattering drunk, who is the heart of the Burn’s family. Norman agrees to take Jessie’s brother Neal fishing one day, and they return to find Neal and his friend passed out in the sun among a couple of empty beer bottles. In a mirrorlike situation, Jessie and her brother are symbolic of Paul and Norman. Jessie as Norman, and Neal as Paul. (note the similarity in name) Jessie asks Norman “How come the people who need the most help, won’t take it.” Norman is not able to answer her, and it is through their relationship that we begin to see the McLean’s more clearly.

The film slowly unfolds itself, letting the viewer appreciate it’s subtle yet powerful storylines. Perhaps it is so effective because it appears matter of factly. It does not come across heavy handedly. Norman is called by the police station to pick his brother up one day, having gotten into a fight over his girlfriend. Paul becomes increasingly in debt at the local gambling house, and has also become an alcoholic. As his life slowly spirals into oblivion, he is unaware of the consequences of his actions. Norman immediately recognizes the destructive path that his brother is heading towards and offers to help. Paul stubbornly refuses to take the money and help that his brother has offered to him. Norman has been accepted to teach at the University of Chicago and urges Paul to come with him. Paul realizes that he will never leave Montana, and so does Norman. In the family’s final fly fishing trip together, Paul has seemingly transcended the art of fly fishing, having mastered his method of “shadow casting”, and makes an incredible catch. Paul has ironically found freedom from his father’s religious upbringing through fly fishing, although he is simultaneously being destroyed by his own rebellion. We are presented with the duality of man and his conflicting inner desires to find equilibrium on many levels. Although Paul has found peace with nature, he is struggling to resolve inner demons that plague him. The inner demons that will eventually destroy him.

Redford’s commentary on the healing power of nature and the stubbornness of the human spirit is a a testament to man’s universal struggle against himself. Indirectly, we recognize that there is only so much a family or person can do to protect someone. We realize that love is simply not enough, and that eventually a person will take their own path that they were meant to take. The River ultimately symbolizes the destinations that are unstoppable as much as nature itself is unstoppable. Everyone’s course is their own. In its ambiguity and power, it is at once haunting and beautiful.

*The rerelease A River Runs Through It contains a brand new Anamorphic widescreen presentation, the image is stunning, although “Deluxe Edition” is misleading. Aside from trailers, text only filmographies, and a collectible scrapbook, there are no additional special features*

This review refers to the Columbia/Tristar DVD edition of “A River Runs Through It”…

Even with Brad Pitt co-starring in this film, it was the awesome cinematography that kept me mesmerized. Filmed in the lush mountains and rivers of Montana, director Robert Redford and Director of Photography Phillipe Rousselot(who won an Oscar for his work on this film)capture the beauty of this land and the story.

Based on a autobiographical novella by Norman Maclean, we are swept back to the earlier part of the 20th century with the Maclean family. Family, church and Fly fishing came above all else. Norman, played at the younger age by newcomer Joseph Gordon-Levitt(who was honored with the Young Artists award in 1993 for his performance), and his younger brother Paul are close and come from a loving but highly disciplined household, run by their stern father(Tom Skerritt) the Reverend of the small town church. The Rev. is strict when it comes to their education, but a big part of that education is the freedom to fly-fish, enjoyed by all the Maclean men.

We watch as Norman and Paul grow into men(Craig Scheffer/Brad Pitt) and how differently their lives turn out. Norman grows into a fine scholar, but Paul takes a different path. His is one of a rebel, who finds trouble at every turn. But always they have their love for each other, their family, and their love of fly-fishing. Paul turns it into an art that is a sight to behold in that beautiful Montana scenery.

Other fine performances are turned in by Brenda Blethyn as Mrs. Maclean, Emily Lloyd as Jessie Burns, the girl Norman loses his heart to and Vann Gravage who plays the young Paul. A beautiful music score by Mark Isham adds greatly to the view without being obtrusive to the story. A fine screenplay by Richard Freidenberg will draw you in and keep you there. It’s a great break from action movies without getting overly dramatic.

It is rated PG, but probably not appropiate for the younger viewers, there are some adult themes as well as brief nudity.

Columbia has done justice to this beautifully filmed movie in it’s transfer to DVD. Just Gorgeous! Remastered in anamorphic widescreen(if you prefer full screen, that is on side B)with excellent clarity of the colors as well as the picture. The sound remastered in Dolby 2.0 Surround was very good, but I would have loved to hear it in 5.1. It may be viewed in French, Spanish(also stereo),or Portuguese(mono), and has subtitles in these languages as well as English. There are theatrical trailers and Talent files, but no other special features.

If your in the mood for a great action thriller, this is NOT it! This is a film to just sit back and savor…..Oh and I really did enjoy Brad Pitt’s performance(almost as much as the scenery)…enjoy….Laurie

I am sure that I am one of many who are incredibly excited about the upcoming release of these brilliant Busby Berkeley musicals! Each of these films contain many of the big screen’s most unforgettable moments, and all five merit inclusion in this fine DVD package.

For fans of musicals and for those who simply enjoy excellent cinema, these movies have it all! First and foremost, the artistry of Berkeley’s musical sequences make these films a must-see! It doesn’t matter if you are a musical maven or not. The inimitable Busby Berkeley production numbers will dazzle you, even with the sound turned down! In addition to being renowned musicals, these films are also some of the wittiest comedies from the 30’s era. I don’t think anybody can resist the well-written snappy dialogue and sly innuendo, particularly from the pre-code releases included here.

My mini-reviews:

FOOTLIGHT PARADE — Great pre-code dialogue, and a fantastic showcase for the comedic talents of both Joan Blondell and James Cagney, the latter demonstrating his incredible footwork that helped him score his Oscar winning role in Yankee Doodle Dandy!

GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933 — My personal favorite of this collection. it features the famous Ginger Rogers number “We’re In The Money”, and the unforgettable “Forgotten Man” performed by Joan Blondell! Great production numbers and more entertaining pre-code comedy.

DAMES — In addition to the great production number of the title song, it features an hilarious performance by Hugh Herbert, probably (though debatably) his best!

GOLD DIGGERS OF 1935 — This one introduces the great production number, “The Lullaby Of Broadway” and also features a great comedic performance from Gloria Stuart (of “Titanic” fame).

42nd STREET — This is the film that reinvented the movie musical! Nuff said, except that Ginger Rogers’ chaffing is a wonderful highlight.

The extras look nice, though I’m sorry no commentaries seem to be included. I’m looking forward to seeing the new featurettes. All in all, this is a very reasonably priced package that is worth every penny. Enjoy!

BUSBY BERKELEY COLLECTION

By Brendan G Carroll

While I was delighted that Warners & Turner have issued these great films on DVD at last in terrific quality (for the most part) and with wonderful extras, there were some opportunities missed here and one glaring omission which I hope I can set right.

The opportunities lost concern the archive material that might have been included and which would have been so worth the effort to acquire. As most Berkeley buffs know, he gave a very interesting and rare interview for a 1966 TV documentary called “The Movie Crazy Years” (about Warners) which also included a nice interview with Joan Blondell. It would have been good to see the relevant excerpts from this superb programme (which I think was made by David Wolper) included in the various featurettes on these DVDs, rather than the endless gushy on-camera posturings of the likes of John Landis. Do I really need to be told over and over in hyper-gushy language, that Buzz was a genius, by so-called celebrity fans? I really wish Turner would at least include either contemporary witnesses or film historians (like Bob Thomas or Rudy Behlmer) to add pertinent commentary to projects like this. WHAT has John Waters got to do with Busby Berkeley I ask you?

The second “missed opportunity” is the rarely (and barely) seen 96 minute documentary “Busby Berkeley” made by Russ Jones in 1974 to co-incide with the publication of Tony Thomas’ superb biography of Buzz, which included rare interviews with Winifred Shaw (about the Lullaby of Broadway number) and Ruth Donnelly (about Footlight Parade) among other treasures.

Surely Turner could have acquired both of these archive resources (at little cost!) for this definitive DVD set? It would have added such tremendous historic value to the collection and genuine insight. I really felt we never got to know much about Berkeley as a man from any of the short documentaries or how he achieved his amazing effects. In fact, I realised that I knew more about him and his techniques, than I learned from any of the featurettes.

Much worse though, is the total absence of any comment about Ray Heindorf, the genius arranger and orchestrator at Warners, from 1931 on, who was responsible for the entire musical style of these films and especially the superb job he turned in for the big numbers - creating seamless 10-15 minute arrangements of Harry Warren’s great songs (and those of Kahal & Fain - they wrote `By A Waterfall’ by the way, not that you would know it from watching the short documentary on Footlight Parade!!).

Heindorf was also responsible for the marvellous, brassy orchestrations throughout - yet he never even gets a mention. He was a genius - in fact, according to Erich Wolfgang Korngold, (as told me by Eleanor Aller & Harry Warren himself) he was the best and fastest orchestrator Korngold had ever encountered, high praise indeed from maybe the one man in Hollywod who would know - and it was Heindorf’s ability to provide an endlessly varied treatment of each song that allowed Berkeley to get away with making a number lasting a quarter of an hour without we, the viewer (and listener) ever getting bored with the tune!

Well, in spite of these shortcomings, it is wonderful to have these at last in better than average prints (and in the case of 42nd Street, amazing prints!) and of course, the historic trailers & shorts are all marvellous to have at last, rescued from the vaults.

However, I hope next time Turner puts out a major collection, somebody will take the trouble to produce a tribute to Ray Heindorf. It’s long overdue.
