Baywatch, television’s most-famous “jiggle series” and by some counts the most-watched show around the world, did more for slow-motion beach joggers than anything since Chariots of Fire–just replace the British Olympic athletes with young women in high-cut red swimsuits who look like Playboy models. The premise of Baywatch is straightforward: a Los Angeles-based team of lifeguards saves swimmers and occasionally fights crime, led by beefcake Mitch Buchannon (David Hasselhoff). And those Playboy models? Erika Eleniak turned a 1989 magazine spread into a role as lifeguard Shauni McClain for two-plus seasons alongside Billy Warlock’s Eddie Kramer character (the actors themselves had a brief engagement), and most of the season’s action revolved around the lives and loves of Mitch, Shauni, and Eddie. (The most famous Baywatch babe, Pamela Anderson, would arrive the following season.) When they weren’t saving people on the beach, they were involved in movie shoots (”Money, Honey”), gang wars (”Point of Attack”), homeless girls (”Sandcastles”) and stray pets (”Thin or Die”), a serious charge against Eddie (”The Trophy”), a Gilligan’s Island hallucination (”Now, Sit Right Back and You’ll Hear a Tale”), and chemical dumping (”The Big Spill”). Hasselhoff’s real-life wife, Pamela Bach, appears in a recurring role as reporter Kaye Morgan, Wendie Malick (Just Shoot Me, Dream On) has a small role as Mitch’s ex-wife, Gayle, and Tom McTigu plays lifeguard Harvey Miller.

Calling this set “season 1″ is a misnomer. It’s really the final 20 episodes of the second season (1991-92), which was the first season the series was in syndication after being dropped by NBC. (The first two episodes, the two parts of “Nightmare Bay,” were previously released on DVD by another studio and are not included here.) In this season, Jeremy Jackson had replaced Brandon Call as Mitch’s son, Hobie, and regular cast members Parker Stevenson (as Mitch’s friend, Craig Pomeroy) and Shawn Weatherly (as lifeguard Jill Riley) were gone as well. However, the series pilot of the real season 1, called “Panic at Malibu Pier,” is included as a bonus. Also, co-creators and executive producers Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz, and Michael Berk discuss their favorite episodes from the second season in a 16-minute segment. Another drawback, however, is that much of the original music has been replaced, including “I’m Always Here,” Jimi Jamison’s theme song. –David Horiuchi

Special-effects legend Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion talents and “Dynamation” (rear-projection) process are the highlights of the ’50s-era creature feature 20 Million Miles to Earth. An American spaceship returns to Earth after a mission to Venus and crashes into the sea near Sicily. A sole survivor (William Hopper) is rescud, along with a specimen that quickly grows into a reptilian biped called the Ymir. The being eventually grows to 20 feet high and escapes its confines, whereupon it rampages through Rome before a showdown with the military. Despite lacking much of a personality, the Ymir is a marvelous showcase for Harryhausen’s skills. Unfortunately, the rest of the film does not match his level of excellence; direction by Nathan Juran is perfunctory (his later collaborations with Harryhausen, including The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, are more lively), and performances and scripting are flat. Still, Harryhausen fans should enjoy this opportunity to see this phase of his career before he created his most enduring works. –Paul Gaita

El Topo’s surrealism is more slapstick than Jodorwosky’s brilliant follow-up, Holy Mountain, making it more akin to a spaghetti western than a psychedelic journey through the subconscious. The director stars as the gunfighter, El Topo (The Mole), who first gives his 7-year old son (played by real life son, Brontis Jodorowsky) a glimpse of manhood in the form of weaponry, then abandons him for a horseback revenge trip focused on a heartless team of raping, pillaging bandits. Along the way, he meets Mara (Mara Lorenzio), whose tough love encourages him to become a monk. On El Topo’s new qust, he encounters spiritual leaders and endures a series of personal realizations about his past violence. Absurd moments, such as when the viewer first encounters the bandits sniffing and drooling over high-heeled women’s shoes out in the desert, make El Topo satirically wry. Brutal scenes in which rivers of blood run through towns, or people slaughter each other in firing lines, remind the viewer of Mexico’s bloody history. The mixture of ironic humor and violence in El Topo encapsulates Jodorowky’s vision of a world in which reality and the imagination are fused, yet completely separate. This paradox, of great thematic concern in all of Jodorowsky’s films, is most resonant in El Topo when Mara and The Mole sadistically communicate with whips, guns, and knives. As Holy Mountain’s religious message centers wholly around The Alchemist’s transformation of Jesus, El Topo introduces love between man and woman into the symbolic mix, compensating for the divine settings and imaginative characters that elucidate the protagonist’s enlightenment in the later Holy Mountain. Only by viewing the two films as a double feature will one get the full power of Jodorowsky’s Buddhist message, one of self-sacrifice and suffering towards a greater end. –Trinie Dalton
