It is often whispered amongst horror aficionados that, in spite of H. P. Lovecraft’s unquestionable influence on the genre, the works of the venerable horror author are difficult to translate to either the small or large screen. Nonetheless, director Stuart Gordon (with more than a little help from his screenwriting partner Dennis Paoli) has built his cinematic reputation around his celluloid interpretations of Lovecraft’s work. And though most of Gordon’s Lovecraftian films are well made, commercially successful, and popular with genre fans, few (if any) of them are clear reflections of the Lovecraft pieces that inspired them. At best, Gordon’s films use satire to evoke the nihilistic subtext of the author’s original work (e.g., Stuart Gordon’s 1985 audience favorite RE-ANIMATOR) or pay simple homage via mood, setting, or character monikers (such as Gordon’s 1995 direct-to-video CASTLE FREAK or his 2001 opus DAGON).

However, with “Dreams in the Witch House” (a.k.a., “H. P. Lovecraft’s Dreams In The Witch House”), Gordon’s 2005 entry in Showtime’s cable-TV series MASTERS OF HORROR, Gordon comes closer than ever to actually translating a Lovecraft story to film. True, the director and his writing partner Paoli have still done a bit of creative redacting–most noticeably, the story is moved forward from the 1930’s to the present day, and there is the addition of a few high-profile characters–but most of the changes serve only to overcome the characterization shortcomings of Lovecraft’s original work. (Many literary scholars agree that, while it is an engaging piece thematically, “Dreams in the Witch House” is not Lovecraft’s best literary work in terms of character and style.) In truth, this film short is, overall, quite faithful to the plot, mood, and theme of the original short story.

Ezra Godden–who genre fans will recognize from his turn as the lead in the aforementioned DAGON–portrays Walter Gilman, a graduate student at Miskatonic University who seeks a quiet, low-rent flat in Arkham, Massachusetts, where he can work on his physics thesis. In a rather sinister, miasmic house built sometime during the early 17th century, Gilman finds a room that suits his needs and, after dickering a bit with the churlish landlord, he hastily moves in.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Masters of Horror - Stuart Gordon - Dreams in the Witch House! Click Here

Not long after settling into his new digs, Walter notices that the odd angles that make up one particular corner of his room bear a startling resemblance to the inter-dimensional gateway that he is working on in his thesis. However, by the time Walter finally accepts that his suspicions are correct and that the corner of his room is, indeed, a doorway to another universe, he fears that he may be too late to stop the witch-like creature that has been surreptitiously slipping through the doorway and terrorizing his neighbor (Chelah Horsdal) and her infant child.

In spite of its short run time (55 mins), small budget, and an excruciatingly short production schedule, “Dreams in the Witch House” does not come across as a run-of-the-mill made-for-cable film. Gordon’s direction is tight and skillful, drawing upon his experience in both theater and film to create a perfect mood that, while intricate to the narrative, never upstages the actors or the action. The acting is top-notch, especially that of leads Godden and Horsdal. Godden is delightful as a nerdy, contemporary Woody-Allen-esque hero, and Horsdal, in spite of her stunning beauty, is able to believably portray a woman who is strong yet still approachable and vulnerable. Jon Joffin’s often breathtaking cinematography also helps belie the film’s meager budget, providing provocative visuals, unusual camera angles, and some in-the-camera trickery that are often only seen in studio blockbusters.

Gordon has stated that he avoided the use of CGI in this film because he feels that Hollywood’s ubiquitous use of sterile computer FX is beginning to bore audiences. Instead, “Dreams in the Witch House” features old-school puppetry, trained animals, in-the-camera tricks, and real-time lighting effects. Combined with Gordon’s signature use of copious gore–not to mention a short nude scene featuring the gorgeous Ms. Horsdal–the film takes on the delightful and refreshing aura of an ’80s horror flick, hearkening back to Gordon’s earlier films like RE-ANIMATOR while still exuding the his cinematic maturity as a writer/director.

The DVD from the cool folks at Anchor Bay offers a pristine transfer of “Dreams in the Witch House” in anamorphic widescreen (1.77:1 aspect ratio). In addition, the disc offers loads of cool extras, including a feature commentary with director Gordon and actor Godden; interviews with the director and actors; a featurette on Gordon’s career as a director of horror films; DVD-ROM goodies; and more! Well worth amazon.com’s reasonable asking price.

In short, “Dreams in the Witch House” is a highly entertaining and notable entry in the horror genre, and it is arguably the best entry hitherto in Showtime’s MASTERS OF HORROR series. Indeed, in spite of its made-for-cable origins, the film rivals many full-length horror films released in theaters these days, and all serious genre fans should consider adding the film to their growing collections.

Stuart Gordon, best known for the low-budget shocker classic Re-Animator, not to mention many adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft horror yarns, brings another one to life for Showtime’s Masters of Horror. Dreams in the Witch House re-unites Gordon and his Dagon star Ezra Godden as Godden plays a physics student renting a dingy room in an old house that also has a single mother and a seemingly crazy religious old man as tenants as well. Soon enough, he’s having dreams of a human faced talking rat and an evil witch that wants the baby’s blood, and plans on using him as a method to make it happen. For most of it’s running time, Dreams in the Witch House is a compelling and inventive horror yarn that makes the most of it’s source material, and the shocker ending sets it apart from other episodes in the series. Once again, the gore and makeup effects are superbly done by KNB, which just makes the package all the sweeter. All in all, Dreams in the Witch House is one of the best episodes in Showtime’s horror anthology series, and for Lovecraft fans this should prove enjoyable as well.

After nearly ten years of obsession and persistence, maverick filmmaker Terry Gilliam finally gets the opportunity to realize his dream of making a movie about that other impossible dreamer, Don Quixote. This extraordinary documentary, produced by the team who gave us “The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of the Twelve Monkeys”, covers six weeks of pre-production of this ambitious and already troubled work and the six days of actual production which destroyed it.

With an exclusive, almost uncomfortable closeness to Gilliam’s project, we get a glimpse at other attempts to film the story (Orson Welles entertained the notion for nearly twenty years, achieving mere minutes of test footage); in-depth looks at storyboards with dialogue; screen tests of “giant” performers (as Terry quips “This is our trailer!” with his trademark Amadeus giggle); meticulous detail being applied to elaborate props and sets; auditions for character actors, and prep work with the film’s would-be stars Jean Rochefort and Johnny Depp, and the overall excitement of launching a project of epic (though underfunded) vision …..

Then the cameras roll. The crew are forced to film in an area adjacent to a military testing range, and the actors can barely hear their director or own spoken lines over the roaring jets. Misunderstandings between members of the multi-national crew result in a lack of preparedness on a ridiculously tight shooting schedule. A sudden storm literally washes valuable filming equipment down a muddy gully, and transforms the locale to one totally different from the one filming was begun in. Star Rochefort suffers multiple herniated discs, causing excruciating pain while on horseback, and has to leave the production for an indefinite time. A well-rehearsed horse becomes nervous in the presence of visiting financiers to the set, and can’t perform.

Production is put on hold while Terry and company await word on their afflicted star, and the assistant director resigns. It becomes apparent that the production must be aborted, the only option being to assess the damages with insurance operatives, and clearly define a clause known as Forces Majeurs.

Lost in La Mancha is an excruciating and candid look at a genius filmmaker confronted with a failed project, and the grace and stubborn optimism with which he faces it. Like his hero Sam Lowry from “Brazil”, the realization may indeed be one of hopelessness, but the dream never really dies. Terry Gilliam’s “un-making of” record makes for a viewing experience that is simultaneously agonizing and inspiring, a must for filmmaking hopefuls who want to be truly prepared for what can happen.

Poor Terry Gilliam. He spends time, money, energy, and I’m sure eaten a lot of antacids, and it comes to naught. But I guess the worse part is not being able to fulfill his dream. For the uber-creative director of many marvelous films, including personal fave “Twelve Monkeys”, you’d think he’d be able to whip up a nice little Don Quixote film. But without Hollywood’s resources, the money, punctuality from the actors, and cooperation from the weather his film, and his dream, came crashing down. It’s unfortunate, because it looked really, really good.

Unlike the glossy “making of” features on many films that are standard DVD extras these days, this documentary goes underneath the smiles and compliments and “best time of my life” statements and makes you wonder how films even get made. Although Gilliam’s “Quixote” had more than it’s fair share of problems to deal with, this documentary shows very well the perpetual purgatory of panic that can befall a production.

From the very beginning we see Gilliam struggling with props and sets, and his exhausted and frustrated crew wondering what exactly he wants while struggling to find resources that aren’t as abundant in Spain as they are in London or Hollywood. We see Gilliam’s right hand man, 1st Assistant Director Phil Patterson, and various producers trying to reel in actors, Johnny Depp, Vanessa Paradis, and Jean Rochefort, from all over Europe on schedule (while making the said schedule). Once shooting, a hail storm from nowhere strikes, fighter planes do test runs over the set, a studio is actually a warehouse with horrendous sound, Rochefort comes down with a prostate problem, and calamity after calamity hits the weary production. It’s painful, and by the time Patterson informs Gilliam that his film is basically dead, it’s the emotional, inevitable climax of a very taut and stress-packed narrative. It never was going to happen from the beginning, and we see almost every minute of it. The filmmakers of this film don’t interfere with what’s going on, and most of the input we get is a more honorable (and very visual) form of eavesdropping, with the exception of a few knowing glances here and there and short explanations from producers, Gilliam, and crew members. And Johnny Depp shows up totally at ease and laid back (with sympathetic worried glances and tension breaking wisecracks when needed), to the delight of this Depp fan.

I think this is one of the best films about the making of a film, a subject we really don’t get to hear much about although it’s remarkably fascinating. It’s up there with DVD commentaries and the similarly apocalyptic “Project Greenlight” series in it’s dive into the real machinery of a film. Where “Project Greenlight” gave us an idea of what a line producers do, behind the scenes relationships, and budgetary fidgeting, this gives you a good idea the enormity of the movie set and everything that could possibly go wrong. According to these, it’s more akin to managing a company or running an army and trying to win every battle than creating the vision of a renegade artist.

In the end, Gilliam is Quixote, an irony not lost on the filmmakers, Gilliam, or viewers. And the project? It’s that blasted windmill.

I have a confession: I rented this on video as soon as it came out back in 1999 & I hated it. In fact, my friend & I turned it off in the middle of the film. Actually, I’m a little embarrassed to admit it, but the real reason is b/c we didn’t know we were watching an actual documentary… Looking back on it, I feel like one of those stupid people who went to see The Blair Witch project, threw up, & thought it was real. So I eventually watched this again in one of my film classes. Yes, by then I knew it was real, but I had never felt like giving it that 2nd chance.

Buy,Download, Or Stream American Movie! Click Here

Well, upon that second viewing, I quickly came to the realization that this film is amazing!! I can’t believe how stupid I was to give up on it before!

As far as documentaries go, American Movie is near-flawless. It’s got humor, sympathy, inspiration, old guys eating Polish sausage, you name it- it’s there. No really, we laugh at the “characters,” but there’s actually a really inspiring & uplifting message to it all. It follows the life of one major film buff from Milwaukee who sets out to make a feature film (Northwestern) but becomes sidetracked with funding problems, so he decides to finish up a short horror film (Coven) to sell for profits. The trials & tribulations of Coven’s production make up American Movie.

Buy,Download, Or Stream American Movie! Click Here

As for the DVD, it’s excellent. There are deleted scenes galore, many of which are GREAT! And they’re not just throw-away junk scenes, which is always a plus. There are commentary tracks & trailers, but best of all, the mother of all extras is… COVEN. Yes, the 22-minute short film is included in its entirety. I can die happy now.

I saw my friend recently & told her that I not only watched American Movie again (which we vowed never to do), but that I loved it! She then told me how she was “forced” to watch it again for one of her film classes & that she loved it too!! So there’s hope for all us imbeciles yet.

Do yourself a huge favor & see this movie if you haven’t already done so. And if you watched half of it before & hated it, please give it a second try. Once you loved it, come back & purchase this DVD like me!

As I watched Mark Borchardt stumble through the filming of ‘Coven’, I kept thinking of the Austrian court composer Solieri’s line in Milos Forman’s Amadeus: “All I ever wanted was to sing to God”, laments Solieri, “He gave me that longing, and then made me mute”.

What do you do with your life when you want to sing, but you are tone deaf? What if you spend far more time dreaming than making your dreams come true? That is the subject of this surprisingly touching and moving documentary.

Mark Borchardt is not mute. His muse has whispered in his ear since he was 12 years old, telling him to make movies. Problems with drinking and a stint in the Army have kept him from his love. As the documentary opens, Mark is doing pre-production for a feature-length movie, ‘Northwestern’. As you watch Mark meet with production staff and potential actors, you quickly realize that he is hopelessly over his head. Mark is given to long, rambling monologues, where you feel he is trying to throw a net of words over his problems.

Eventually Mark sees the handwriting on the wall. He realizes that he cannot start this movie, and decides instead to complete a short film he started several years earlier, ‘Coven’. (Mark pronounces it KO-ven, rather than KUH-ven).

As the documentary progresses, you are brought into the well intentioned but dysfunctional world of Mark’s friends and family. You find yourself wondering about the line between loyalty and co-dependency. What is the difference between supporting a dream and enabling a friend to live in a fantasy world? You see the inhabitants of Mark’s world struggle with these questions. Through it all, Mark may stumble, but he holds true to quest of completing Coven.

If Mark is quixotic, then his good friend Mike Shank is definitely his Pancho. Mike has been sober for a couple of years, but you can tell he was dinged up a bit in the drug wars. He is so totally without guile, and so completely loyal to Mark, as to be utterly disarming.

It is tempting to smirk at these people at the beginning of the film, much less easy to do so by the end. Whatever you think of Mark as a filmmaker, you are moved by his struggle to see his vision completed.

Chris Smith could have created a patronizing look at an Auteur with less talent than himself, but he has accomplished much more than that. This story makes you wonder about the dreams of people who are not famous, or glamorous, but still listen to their muse. The touching conclusion of this movie is that there is real nobility in their quixotic quest.

A film of amazing emotional depth , Sita Sings the Blues is not merely animated personal mythology. The film combines the creative talents of cartoonist Nina Paley with a selection of (what are now) standards from the 1920’s Blues singer Annette Hanshaw (think Bessie smith without the lugubriousness) and some honest pictorial rendering of the Indian myth “The Ramayana”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Sita Sings The Blues! Click Here

Sita Sings the Blues is Pre-Cinema. If much of today’s Hollywood film scripting owes itself to comic books, this film fits easily within the creative embryo of the genre and produces a minimalist ,illustrated video comic that blends disparate audio and visual styles with a narrative personal mythology , so original that it is capable of influencing a whole genration of artists and filmmakers.

Sita’s story (the Ramayana is a very well known tale and Ill skip repeating the epic here) has always been the lost voice in the telling of the epic. “The blues” corrects this historical slight in a very satisfying way.

I had the pleasure of checking out the film at a Festival in New York. The animation has a unique home made, heartfelt and endearing quality. It is visually delightful. The juxtaposition of the director’s contemporary, emotional journey alongside a character from hindu mythology is a remarkably difficult to execute. She pulls it of with sensitivity and transports the audience to a period in her life. The use of witty shadow puppets as narrators is fantastic and I strongly recommend the film. It is an enjoyable, mature, non-disney like use of animation which is rare. The vision is undeniable and I am looking forward to see what the filmmaker does next.

The movie is great; but, this DVD is very bad!

This film is outstanding. Historical accuracies aside, this movie has an amazing message. It is such a beautiful story. It is also the biggest bollywood movie I have ever seen, with thousands of extras in some scenes. The costumes and set design are absolutely stunning and look phenomenal on the big screen.

The dvd however is a complete flop. It is not even anamorphic widescreen. When it is stretched to fill your widescreen tv, the picture becomes heavily pixelated, and the subtitles get cut off!! I’m hoping that UTV will correct this issue, and hopefully in the future, release this film on Blu-ray.

Movie serials were written for youngsters but, as screenwriter Barry Shipman observed, this was not a putdown: “No, it’s for the 12-year-old in all of us.” Republic did them best, and “Adventures of Captain Marvel” is one of Republic’s best (some say THE best). The flying superhero is based on a 1940s to 1950s comic book character, who went out of business after being sued by DC, the publishers of Superman, as a ripoff (in more recent years, he has been acquired and revived by DC; go figure). DC had a chance to have Superman serialized at Republic, but passed (the script was revised to become “The Mysterious Dr. Satan” with a non-super hero); Superman serials later came from Columbia with cartoon flying sequences. When the promoters of the Chris Reeve/Superman movie said it would be the first time audiences would believe a man could fly, they obviously hadn’t seen the Captain Marvel serial.

Definitely the finest of the old-time movie serials, and the finest live action version of Captain Marvel. This movie was voted by Wizard magazine as the best comics-to-movie adaptation ever.

It has decent special effects and a fine story. A classic desert adventure, including angry horde, offended god, and stalwart hero. The flying sequences are well done. The cliff hangers are appropriately dramatic. The Scorpion is a nice serial villain, complete with hooded face and ultimate weapon, and Captain Marvel remains my favorite hero.

If you like serials or Captain Marvel you really can’t go wrong with this.

This is a wonderful, heartwarming film, as well as an indictment of the US Navy at a certain time in history. The story is a cinematic, biographical sketch of Carl Brashear, the first African-American to become a diver for the US Navy. Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Robert De Niro both give Oscar calibre performances in this gripping film.

The movie tells the story of Carl Brashear, whose parents instilled in him a determination that would cause him never to give up his dream of becoming a diver in the US Navy. He stuck to his guns, despite the overt racism that he encountered when he joined the Navy. The racism that he encountered would make it harder for him to achieve his life long dream.

Once he became a diver, Mr. Brashear upped the ante and strove to become a master diver. He struggled to do this against all odds, and just when he was on the cusp of achieving his goal, a tragic accident befell him, derailing him temporarily from the path to his ultimate goal. What he then does to fulfill his dream is radical, yet inpirational.

Cuba Gooding, Jr. gives a perfomance so moving and heroic, that the viewer feels like giving him a twenty one gun salute at the end of the film. Robert De Niro plays a racist master diver who is ultimately converted to the side of the angels, when he realizes that Carl Brashear is truly the best of the best. His performance is stellar.

The only problem with the movie is that most of the supporting roles pale in comparison to the two central ones played by Gooding and De Niro. Charlize Theron’s role, that of De Niro’s wife, is really superfluous to the story. Aunjanue Ellis, who affectingly plays Gooding’s wife, has a more crucial, pivotal role than Ms. Theron, but remains a shadowy figure in the backround. Hal Holbrook’s portrayal of a loony, racist Navy commander is rather one dimensional, more of a caricature than a character. Notwithstanding these small shortcomings, this is a riveting film that should not be missed.

Military training films are becoming so common that they are becoming a genre unto themselves. Among the more prominent we have, “Officer and a Gentleman”, “Top Gun”, “GI Jane”, and now “Men of Honor”. The fact that this one happened to be true doesn’t change the fact that the formula is the same. This film is probably most like “GI Jane” since it focuses on the desegregation angle.

The story is actually quite inspirational and is probably the best human-interest story among those mentioned above. Carl Brashear (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) is unquestionably a man of great courage and principle, and his strength of character shines through brightly in this film. Unfortunately, director George Tillman, Jr. has tunnel vision in presenting the characters and eschews character development of various characters other than Brashear in favor of showing Brashear in a constant state of adversity. Billy Sunday (Robert De Niro) is a central figure, and except for the initial scene, the fistfight and a couple of scenes with his wife, we don’t know much about him. For instance, Brashear sees the scars on Sunday’s palms and we are to assume that he worked a plow, but there is no follow-up on that point. Mr. Pappy (Hal Holbrook) gets only one short scene by which we can judge him. The rest of his screen time shows him pacing around and ranting. If a director is going to make a human-interest story, he needs to humanize the characters.

Cuba Gooding Jr. gives an outstanding performance as Brashear. This is probably the best I’ve seen him. This is a role and a character that is far more complete than any part he has played before, and he rises to the occasion. In “Jerry Maguire”, Rod Tidwell was a fascinating, but one-dimensional character with the depth of a rain puddle. Brashear is much more complex and grounded, and the issues he faces are life crises, making the part far more challenging. This is an excellent recovery from Gooding’s last role in “Chill Factor”, a film so dreadful that it was almost an act of professional suicide to take the part.

After a stint trying his hand as a comedian (”Analyze This”, “The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle”, “Meet The Parents”), Robert DeNiro is back to his dramatic roots with an outstanding performance. DeNiro isn’t a bad comedian, he is just such a great dramatic actor that it seems like he shouldn’t waste his time doing comedy. DeNiro endows Billy Sunday with a rock hard personality belying a tortured soul. It is a pleasure watching him work.

It seems every film I watch lately has Charlize Theron in it. I saw “The Legend of Bagger Vance”, “Men of Honor” and “The Yards” right in a row and I was beginning to wonder if she had a part in every film in 2000 (actually, she only did five). This was a minor role for Theron, but she carried it off well and managed to stay with DeNiro step for step. David Keith, who co-starred with Richard Gere in “Officer and a Gentleman”, has a cameo here

The DVD has some interesting special features, including reflections by the real Carl Brashear and some deleted scenes.

I enjoyed this film despite the hackneyed plot and the one-dimensional presentation. I rated it a 7/10. I’m a sucker for underdog stories and I have a fondness for stories where strength of character is the central theme. This film is particularly strong in both areas and brings us two memorable acting performances that compensate for some of the director’s shortcomings.

I love the Original series and purchased this item to finish my collection. This add on is not very good it lacks the feel and draw in appeal of the original. I’m sure others will like it but the computer slap on art work just didn’t mix well for me and it didn’t appeal to my artistic side. Would I want it anyway? of course - it completes a great series.

This seemed to be a good opp to clean up all the continuity issues, false starts and other stuff.

If anything I am more confused. Retcon seems to be the word of the day for this offering. Retcon is fine if clearing up previous continuity issues but uh it seems lke the retcon stuff made more to me.

The music was great. The animation of the characters was pretty lame - they look like manga toons, the CGI stuff was lame.

Why is it so hard to explain what happened to the 99% of the other original characters we wanted to see? Where are they all? Why are some around and how did they get there (Louie for instance) but not the others? Okay the rest of the third generation stayed on earth and left behind for good prolly but it would have been nice if you could have thrown us a bone and they made cameos at least.

Where is the rest of the first and second generation? I understand there is a comic that preceedes this that has some of them in it.

Why do new characters need to be introduced when there are so many you could have chosen from? I was hoping there would be mixing and matching from the three different generations. I understand if there is some matter of copyright or what not but just spread the word about that if so and there would be a little more understanding maybe.

Good to hear the old voices. All this did for me was explain nothing and raise more questions.

Overall the production was flat, everyone seems in slow motion talking and walking around (for instance character A asks Character B a questions…5 seconds later character B drones out a monotone answer), new characters are sort of weak, too much purple hair. One character with purple hair is fine but mix it up a little more.

This is like Sentinals all over again.

Murray Abraham gives a great performance as one of the prison inmates, Virgil Cane, that befriends him. It has all the elements for some good drama, bad cops, drugs, decent and really bad convicts, attractive loving wife, and motive for revenge.

David Rasche and Richard Young do a fine job as the crooked detectives that frame him. I have recommended this to many people since many Selleck fans are not even aware of it. Whether you like Selleck or not you will enjoy this film if you like movies like “The Fugitive”,”US Marshals”, and “Shawshank Redemption”. It is being released on DVD soon and you can bet I pre-ordered a copy.

Even though you know what’s going to happen to Tom Selleck’s character, and you know that the ending will be happy, watching the process is enjoyably discomfiting. This is a plot film — stuff keeps happening to the main character, things he appears utterly incapable of controlling, and everything spirals right into disaster. Great Friday night fare. Make a lot of popcorn and savor it.
