I’ve been waiting impatiently for the second series of this delicious British indicate (titled Quandary and Jerusalem there) to be available on this side of the pond. Although it collected hasn’t aired here on BBC America, I did procure these episodes in 9-minute chunks on YouTube (certainly not the best plot to obtain a TV indicate, but grateful for the access anyway) . It’s a sweet, comic, and very poignant character view of the quirky women of Clatterford, a puny fictional village in Devon. If you’ve not seen series 1, don’t mediate you’re getting another AbFab from the vivid Jennifer Saunders. This is a very different exhibit. Like series one, it showcases the gentler side of English village life that is sadly passing away.

I wrote a review rhapsodizing over season 1 of Clatterford and couldn’t say enough edifying things. We were on the list to procure season 2 the second it became available on Amazon U.S. Alas, we are sadly disappointed. We should have been alerted when we saw a second name on the writing credit. However, we figured Jennifer Saunders would have remained on top of things and kept the characters and plots congruent, as they had been in season 1. The stories flowed so naturally from the characters that we were able to sit succor and simply bask. However, season 2 is not in the same category - it is unruffled better than most television, no matter what side of the Atlantic it’s being produced, hence the 3 stars - but it certainly is not a 5 star series any more.

I’m going to confess here that a large fragment of our disappointment was a totally fantastic glitch in the behavior of one of the main characters, Sal. Sal’s daughter, 36 years ragged and mother of a young child, is unable to remove care of herself, can’t execute a decent decision, has to live with her mother because she won’t/can’t obtain work, and is neglectful of her son. This is not stunning, but it is believable - as is the blueprint Sal alternates between being frustrated beyond reason, and co-dependent to a fault. This rang apt to us, as we have a similar state in our occupy family - and we identified mightily with all of it- the frustrations, the co-dependency, the futile attempts to put a question to and expect adult behavior from someone who simply isn’t estimable of it - and continuing to care for and hope despite all evidence to the contrary. It was the first time we’d seen this station portrayed with sensitivity, honesty, and accuracy in any medium and we were mightily impressed. In Season 1 that is.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Clatterford: The Complete Season Two! Click Here

Then comes season 2 - wherein Sal, portrayed as an brilliant, experienced woman, who, although co-dependent, is not blind to her daughter’s flaws - encourages her to hook up with a man who is in worse mental health than the daughter, addicted to drugs, and even less responsible. Are we to beget that Sal lost enough IQ points in a year to remove on a life time of supporting 3 people, rather than passing along the two she’s already in bondage to? There is a solid and responsible man who wants to buy care of them - are we to own Sal would actively try to disrupt this overjoyed region of affairs? I don’t assume so. It is especially annoying because this idiotic status theme takes up a genuine bit of the season. Recognize around you - feckless, aimless, helpless people marry stable people who will occupy care of them. And then there’s changing Tip from a comical, witty, kind, hard working woman who has a difficult life with a man she loves and who loves her - and the fortitude, wisdom, and humor to withhold on with it - into a bitter, gloomy, whiner. A conflict with a lot of detestable verbal sniping between two other characters - Eileen and Katie is unlikely, bad, and irritating to look. Given the character development of these two women, it simply wouldn’t be. And we are quick-witted enough to know that.

Conflict for conflict’s sake is fair expressionless painful (as well as dumb and annoying) to survey. This spot technique only causes a person to click the clicker and pop in a different DVD - or go read a well written book. Season 1 of Clatterford we watched virtually in one sitting, it was so compelling. Season 2 we turned off before the disk was done. We will probably enact watching it some time - but we felt no need to lose sleep over it. My only regret about writing this review is that I conception to resell it and have to hope no one reads it before buying!

To be impartial, there is some constancy as well, which makes it worth a viewing. Is it that there was only one advantageous season in this setting, with these characters? Certainly I expected there was more gold to be found in Clatterford. Or is it that the firm and talented hand that guided the first season is doing something else, and a television hack writer has taken charge? The acting remains topnotch, it’s the writing that has fallen off. We’ve seen a few television series where that has happened - the originator has said all he/she has to say and moves on, leaving the plotting to a lesser talent. After a season or two of implausible plots and incongruent characterizations, the series simply fades away. What a shame to have this happen to Clatterford.

I am giving a microscopic recommendation: you will salvage some of it less than plausible and therefore not nearly as fascinating as season 1; but there is serene enough remaining of the noble characters and their doings to be worth a watching. I’m not so determined I’m ecstatic we bought it, however. I would adore there to be a season 3, benefit to the quality of the first season.

I admit it…I fancy this movie…I saw this at my local shop (dvd planet) and couldn’t resist… Directors Cleave..6 more minutes! I got a sick feelingn when I place it in my player and the SAME menu as the previous edition came up… Turns out to be the same as previously released with a current shroud. If you have the previous release…do NOT purchase this.

lets hope a Blu Ray edition with some sincere bonus features will happen eventually. My 1 star rating is for this hopeless retread in packaging NOT the friendly movie!

I’ve been a long time Highlander fan, but with past DVDs I’ve always been disappointed with both the audio and video, got a PS3 and the audio problems went away, but the somewhat lackluster video was detached explain. The Immortal Edition DVD I had unbiased seemed a minute noisy or grainy to glean any visual pleasure, even by Standard Definition means.

Then the 2009 Lionsgate came, whether this edition was remastered I’m not positive, though it does spy more visually lively to me, though I was a bit stunned with the same Menu shroud from my previous DVD. The image is not as salubrious as Lionsgate’s 2004 Highlander 2 DVD, but I’d recommend this one non the less. I so hope for all the Highlander movies to arrive to Blu-Ray and peer and sound mammoth.

No movie that I watch on a regular basis makes me feel so powerfully the joy of being alive as this one. Although many films and numberless and sappy television shows since 1987 have weak angels of one bad sort or another, Wim Wenders managed to success while all the others failed. Working from a anecdote by eminent writer Peter Handke, Wenders takes angels that seem to have more in current with Rilke’s Duino Elegies than the Bible or the Unusual Age angels. Their function is to see and search for and report, and in their acquire little fashion, to comfort and commiserate. The trick wasn’t to arrive up with the gimmick of angels being able to listen to the thoughts of humans, but to effect those thoughts pretty and representative of all that is quintessentially human. The trick wasn’t to have the angels spy in shaded and white and the humans in color, but in making what was seen, whether two or many toned, glowing. One has only to examine the absolutely appalling CITY OF ANGELS, an English language remake starring Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage, to contemplate that having gimmicks isn’t enough; you must have substance as well.

This is not a perfect film. There are some listless moments, and I thoroughly disfavor a couple of moments in the film, in particular, Dommartin’s speech to Bruno Ganz in the bar advance the slay of the film. But there are so many fair moments, so many moments where they not merely earn something proper, but manufacture a moment of almost transcendent beauty, that WINGS OF DESIRE provides more than entertainment, but something akin to a reason to live. The movie becomes in the ruin a celebration of life, of all the tawdry elements that go into being human. The movie ends in affirming nearly as many things as Walt Whitman does in “Song of Myself.”

I admire the cast. Bruno Ganz is perfect as Damiel, the central angel of the record. Likewise, Otto Sander’s face is the perfect receptacle for all that he witnesses on his tranquil rounds through Berlin, while Solveig Dommartin is so sympathetic a character, so glorious, that one could imagine an angel or anyone else yearning to be with her. And Peter Falk turns in a remarkably quirky character role, playing himself on state in Berlin. The city itself emerges as a major actor, providing what is sure to stand as the last tall visual representation of Berlin in the last couple of years before the Wall fell. Curt Bois was a musty character actor who was a staple in Hollywood films in the 1930s and 1940s, playing a big number of waiters and tailors and hotel clerks (he plays the pickpocket at the very beginning of CASABLANCA) . In what would be the last role before his death, Bois appropriately plays “Homer,” the aged man remembering all that had occurred in Berlin in the past several decades, playing the role of human gawk to counterbalance the angelic witnesses.

This film and UNTIL THE Extinguish OF THE WORLD, a Wenders film that followed this one in 1991 have to have two of the best soundtracks I have encountered. Subtract either “Six Bells Chime” by Crime and the City Solution or “From Her to Eternity” by Lop Cave, and this would have been far less of a film, and the scene where Solveig Dommartin changes in her trailer while listening to Slash Cave do “The Carny” might be the best scene in the film.

I first saw Wings of Desire in 1988. It is impossible to exclaim someone what this movie is about. They best method to portray it is to negate that you will learn from it. It shows you what it is to be alive, like life, and to descend in treasure with the world around you. Bruno Ganz and Otto Sander are aesthetic! They fit very well together. Solveig Dommartin was a joy to perceive. Her consume of multiple languages to point to her thoughts and emotions was very well done. Curt Bois fit into his role 100% and was superior. Peter Falk was a magnificent addition to the film and also fit nicely with his exhaust of English and a exiguous bit of German. This movie teaches about Chilly War Berlin and the wall that divided the city. It teaches you to strive for what you desire in life because you can collect it if you really want it. Wim Wenders and Peter Handke were geniuses with fitting all of this together. This movie is totally not Hollywood style. There is no sappy romance or most of the cast getting shot to death in brutal ways. There is no script cast in stone. It pulls at your heart and your mind and never becomes tiring, or uninteresting. It does not speak you step by step the residence. It gives basic ideas and lets you settle in your heart how you will feel the film. Wim Wenders is shimmering! Berlin has changed so great since Wings of Desire was released. Wim Wenders has kind of frozen time and preserved this era of Berlin for us. It does not display Berlin as some pleasing majestic town like a Hollywood film would. It shows how the people are a kind of eclectic group kind of pushed together and pulled apart in this walled off land. Wim Wenders gives a lot of leisurely the scenes info in the angels among us portion of the DVD. Wim Wenders’ director’s commentary is priceless. He answered questions that have been in my head for the last 15 years. He is very marvelous with all information and takes a lot of time to justify all. A Hollywood director would never do this! The DVD is like a double feature. The movie (in German) is one section and the film history, historical city data, and personal information (in English) provided by Wim Wenders about Berlin makes a second portion.

Wings of Desire is a nice film for German students. Bruno Ganz and Otto Sander declare German beautifully and sure. They exhaust every day vocabulary so it gives superior practice with sentence construction.

Do not bother with the American version City of Angels. Maybe it is easier for us in the U.S. since it is in English but it was a complete raze of film. The American version kills, more like savagely butchers, all the Wings of Desire cast worked so hard for.

I would give the DVD 10 stars if I could.

This movie is for and about teachers. “Teachers” lampoons a typical overcrowded urban high school and the group of burned-out, misfit teachers who work there. The school is being sued for graduating a student who can’t read, and school administrators are more concerned about preserving the supposed-credibility of their school than with correcting the jam which led to the lawsuit.

Nick Nolte plays Alex, a customary idealist who has grown bitter and cynical over the years. As the movie begins, he is a drunken womanizer who may or may not exhibit up to class. He has been allowed to continue his dysfunctional ways because his behavior fits in with that of the other teachers. All this begins to change when his deposition for the lawsuit is taken by an attorney and worn student whose life he had touched. She is appalled at his loss of ideals and challenges him to again compose a inequity in students’ lives. When his interest in teaching reawakens, his attitude becomes a pickle for the administration in their quest to squelch the lawsuit. They turn on him and try to manufacture him a scapegoat for the school’s numerous problems.

Many of the characters in “Teachers” are recognizable as people we have all known:

School Board Member - An overbearing bureaucrat whose main emphases are compliance and minimization of awful publicity.

Principal - A complete airhead whose most current response to any inquire of is “I don’t know”. He hides in his office most of the time and defers all decisions to the assistant well-known.

Assistant necessary - A obliging educator and ragged idealist who has become bitter and cynical over the years. His unique emphasis is to survive each day with the fewest number of casualties. In the kill, he conspires to beget his friend Alex a scapegoat in the lawsuit in order to hold the school’s atrocious space quo.

School secretary - A trustworthy and unflappable matron who (along with the assistant primary) keeps the school running.

School psychologist - She’s the craziest person on staff. In the opening scene, she goes nuts and attacks another teacher in the office in chunky understanding of students and faculty.

Gym teacher - Has a long history of having sex with students and getting them pregnant. He is passed from school to school by the school district to cloak his crime.

“Ditto” - A burned-out teacher who mimeographs worksheets for his students so that they can quietly work while he sits at the attend of the room reading the newspaper. His proudest accomplishment is getting the award for “Most Shapely Classroom” several years in a row. He ends up dying slow his newspaper during class and no one even notices.

The school’s best teacher - Richard Mulligan plays an escaped lunatic who masquerades as a teacher until he is caught. No one ever asks to discover his credentials. In a short period he becomes the school’s most beloved and most effective teacher. The unspoken message here might be that you’d have to be crazy to become a teacher.

Teacher union bag - A whining weasel who passes himself off as the teachers’ best friend, but shamelessly sells Alex out in exchange for a meaningless concession from the school board.

This film is not an indictment against teachers per-se. Rather, it is an indictment against a community that would allow such an educational system to exist. Parent and community apathy seem to be the culprits here.

Consider how parents are portrayed in the film: First we learn of the parents who filed the lawsuit around which the film revolves. It is apparent they were less concerned about their son’s education than about the money and/or notoriety to be gained from the lawsuit. (Surely they must have known their son couldn’t read prior to graduation) . Later we meet a spot of divorcing parents who are more concerned about antagonizing each other than about meeting their son’s needs. When Alex tries to support their talented-but-misguided son, they converge on the school to thwart his efforts. These are not the actions of parents concerned about education.

Community apathy has allowed the school system to become more concerned about its image than with education, which leaves teachers caught hopelessly in the middle. Without the serve of parents, the school board, or the teachers union, they languish. It could happen anywhere, despite our obligation as a society to prevent it.

“Teachers” has a B-movie feel and the writing could be better. But it conveys a mighty message and is particularly titillating to teachers who can gawk some reality in it.

I have to wonder if some of the reviewers have ever been a teacher or remember their school days. I have been a teacher for 17 years and saw this movie when in college. It was amusing then and is very loyal to me now. This movie hits home in more ways than those outside the realm of education will ever know. (one of those sprint a mile in my moccasins things)

As a teacher, I have seen most everything this movie depicts (all at one suburban school district that most would believe an first-rate school) . I have seen the crime. I have seen the humor. I have seen the pleasurable teaching. I have seen the very pathetic teaching. I’ve seen the “Ditto” teachers. I’ve seen the screwed up kids with the even more screwed up parents. I’ve seen the lack of pain for the factual well being of kids from everybody. I’ve also seen the truly caring and genuine teacher raked over the hot coals for valorous to care and as a result simply want to give up and discontinue (Nolte’s character) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Teachers! Click Here

Don’t minimalize this movie. If you want to explore a rare and true behold of what goes on slow the doors of the education profession, seize a study at this very spirited film. The fact that it mirrors reality is both very black and enlightening.

Sure. Why not? The first expect in assessing a movie’s merit is does it do as intended?

With “Music and Lyrics,” what it intends is nothing fantastic. It aims to be a fun, romantic, sweet comedy of a man meeting a woman and falling in appreciate, with a go at pop culture. It accomplishes this. I saw this on February 14, Valentine’s Day, and wanted exactly as delivered.

Paul McCartney asked in the 1970s what the world needs with another funny admire song. “Music and Lyrics” is, in film, a amusing appreciate song.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Music and Lyrics! Click Here

Hugh Grant plays Alex Fletcher, a has-been pop singer from a defunct duo similar to Wham!, struggles to pick up his blueprint as his audience stops caring. Realistic, he knows what he is apt of, but is unsure what his next step should be.

When Cora, a pretentious execute of Britney Spears-Shakira-Christina Aguilera of sex-pop, offers him an opportunity to write a song, he runs into pains. He is a melody man, not a lyricist. His lyricist from his venerable band, Pop!, is long gone.

In walks Sophie Fisher, played with charm by the ever-sweet Drew Barrymore. She’s Alex’s temporary plant watering person (and not a very capable one), with a penchant for delivering peppy lyrics under her breath. Despite the scorn of fill-in wordsmith Greg Antonsky, Alex takes a liking to her style. Greg’s angst-style, hopeless lyrics seem off kilter with Alex’s personality.

Embittered from a broken affair with an engaged man, Sophie is uninterested. It is one thing to hum a tune, and it is another to commit to writing a song. However, Alex only has a few days and pressures (begs, really), Sophie to support.

She acquiesces, and tries to write. Alex and Sophie clash, as he understands the profession of music, and is desperate, and she is level-headed stuck on the failed affair.

Both are living in the past, and both need to depart up into 2007 to survive and thrive.

Finally, lyrics are written, and Cora loves them — with a few changes. Cora’s version is laced with faux spirituality and tramped-up seduction. Sophie’s artistic sensibilities are insulted, and pulls the song remarkable to Alex’s chagrin. They argue, break-up, and now, Alex is stuck trying to fix a song.

Can he fix the song on time? Will they figure out how to live in the explain day? What about adore (this is a romantic comedy, remember? ) .

A graceful self-mocking performance is place on by Kristen Johnston as Sophie’s older sister Rhonda, making jabs at her fill weight-loss campaign. Brad Garrett as Alex’s agent Chris Riley is correct on the money, as he is both a manager and friend.

Drew Barrymore shows she’s more than the girl next door, but has a kind of Lucille Ball, Jenna Elfman, Meg Ryan mix going on.

Hugh Grant is perfectly cast, and is the better side of himself. He never overplays the role, and yet, does not tumble into the ’stupid Englishman’ persona he occasionally does.

I fully recommend “Music and Lyrics.”

Anthony Trendl

editor, HungarianBookstore.com

“Music and Lyrics” is a hoot: witty, shining, beautifully performed by the radiant Drew Barrymore (as ditzy, charming, comely Sophie Fletcher) and the dry of wit, Hugh Grant (as the less distinguished half, Alex Fletcher of a hot 80’s duo, “Pop” obviously patterned after “WHAM”) and briskly paced by director Marc Lawrence.

The record is light and airy: Fletcher needs support writing a song for a Britney clone, Cora. A song that could maybe bring him help to prominence after twenty years of playing store openings, amusement parks and nostalgia concerts. Sophie, though a partner with her sister in a Weight Loss clinic, is a whiz at writing pop lyrics: presto…match made in heaven!

The interplay between Barrymore and Grant is plot on and the dialogue and tale are almost up to their trustworthy timing but they both work hard, though not too as that would bellow the comedy, to design this work and in most scenes it does.

“Music and Lyrics” is as light as a crepe filled with caramelized bananas and topped with whipped cream and as such don’t question more from it than a tremendous smile and the exquisite satisfaction that comes from eating something you have no business challenging.

How astonishing it is to have this novel movie beautifully restored to its recent length and scene order by the British Film Institute.

Until about ten years ago, I had never seen this film. I had never rented the crop, reconfigured tape, because I didn’t contemplate I’d like the film (in any execute) . But the L.A. County Museum of Art had an Archers’ retrospective several years ago that included the BFI restoration print. Despite many of there pictures being among my favorites, I detached opinion I was in for a hoary WW II propaganda film. I could slide if I didn’t like it.

Was I ever corrupt. I came out considering it among The Archers best works. which in my book, means one of the finest films ever.

“The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp,” in the novel version, is a quick-witted mix of WW II propaganda, an often whimisical loving satire of the system. It is ultimately one of the most winning anti-war films ever. In a different map, as satisfactory as “Stout Illusion.”

This low-key account begins with the Boer War, when Blimp is a young (too) gung-ho officer to the time the film was made–mid-war 1943. The cast is fine. Roger Livesey gives one of the best performances imaginable. Deborah Kerr (18) at the time, gives a tour-de-force performance as the three different women Blimp falls for in the 40-year span of the film. Anton Walbrook Is so shiny in this film. This man I am now convinced was one of the greatest actors of the 20th Century. His controversial character is a German officer Blimp befriends in the Boer War and they become life-time friends, with Blimp vouching for him being permitted to finish in England during WW II. Walbrook’s scene explaining why he has left Germany is as tall, if not greater than his curtain speech in “Red Shoes.” Most other actors would have turned this into maudlin sentimentality. Walbrook instead gave me a giant lump in my throat. I don’t lump easily.

If you’ve never seen the complete, uncut and untampered with film and are Archers devotee, this is the version for you.

The extras are uniformly heavenly. The commentary track with Martin Scorsesse and director Michael Powell, from a recording he made on first viewing the restored film, is enchanting and perceptive. He sounds very broken-down and can be hard to understand because of it, but it is worth the extra anxiety to hear him comment on one of his personal favorites.

There is also an trustworthy half-hour or so documentary, that includes Emeric Pressburger’s grandson, that helps account for why and how the film was tampered with and almost never seen as a result of Prime Minister Winston Churchill trying to ban it. No luck in England. J. Arthur Evil released it in his English theatres and advertised “Behold The Banned Film.” And it was a great hit. The “banned” got the initial audiences in, word-of-mouth made it the movie too watch. Winnie also failed in his attempts to finish exportation to other countries.

One of the most knowing, witty, serious, breathtakingingly lovely Technicolor films ever released.

Get this Criterion appreciate now. It also includes several Colonel Blimp “current” editorial cartoons, by Blimp creator David Obscene. Some are timely today and could hurry with the names changed to suit today’s political and military madness. The editorial cartoons were a revelation to me.

Archer Fans, order now and have a really complete collection of these new gems.

The chap from England, below, is absolutey, factual.

This and “A Matter of Life and Death” are Powell & Presberger’s masterpieces, before they descended into the schmalz of “The Red Shoes”. The story of the essentially decent British and German gentlemen, played by Roger Livesey and Anton Walbrook respectively, posthaste becoming dinosaurs in the changing Europe between the Boer War and the Blitz, yet clinging to their values despite being kicked in the face by the brutalisation of Germany and by the consequent brutalisation of a Britain attempting to survive against barbarism. Their friendship begins from the mutual respect engendered by a duel fought reluctantly for the honour of their respective traditions at the time of the Boer War. During convalescence they vie for the hand of Deborah Kerr, turning up in the first of 3 roles. Livesey’s shyness leaves Walbrook holding the field. Nearly 20 years pass until they meet again, at a POW camp in Britain. Livesey’s well-known naivete rides roughshod over the wartime enmity, but Walbrook’s response is ambivalent, and the reunion is short-lived and bittersweet. Livesey marries Deborah Kerr’s reincarnation as a nurse, because of a resemlance to his first treasure. A further 20 years pass. Livesey, widowed, is asked to act as sponsor for Walbrook, now exiled from Germany, also widowed and estranged from his Nazi children. Together they advance to terms with their sidelining in a world of younger men with few of the ancient values. Deborah Kerr turns up for the third time as Livesey’s driver as he moves from army officer to Home Guard organiser, refusing to be pushed out of the fight. In appearance Livesey’s character assumes the appearaqnce of David Low’s cartoon Colonel Blimp, but underneath he is more rounded; decent, reliable to and genuine to friends, unimaginative to denegrate his foes and totally patriotic, but finally nobody’s fool. John Laurie appears in a savory cameo as Livesey’s batman/manservant, crusty but staunch. His boss may occasionally exasperate and perlex, but Laurie recognises the basic decency, as, finally, all do who reach into contact with him. It may be propaganda, but it is aloof shapely.

The gradual grand Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski cleverly “adapted” the three French ideals — liberty, equality, fraternity — into three thought-provoking modern-day dramas about people who cope with personal losses and tragedies. In BLUE, the first of the trilogy, a widow tries to spot herself free (and net liberty) from her emotional baggages. The second film, WHITE, is about a jilted man’s obnoxious set to score even (thus, equality) with his ex-wife. The last film, RED, which is also Kieslowski’s final film before he died in 1996, is about a lonely customary man who is embittered by the memories of his youth and finds accidental companionship (fraternity) with a young model. All three films are understated in their tone, economical in their dialogs, elliptical in their editing and plotting (there are some mind-boggling flashbacks and flash forwards in WHITE), and haunting in their atmosphere.

The references to the three French ideals are actually quite tenuous, and in fact more and more so as the trilogy progresses. BLUE is the only one that deals with the ideal of “freedom” (albeit emotional freedom) in a concrete contrivance, challenging us to ponder its meanings and its attainability. WHITE treats the opinion of “equality” in a rather subversive and satiric arrangement, and it clearly wants us to rethink its meanings rather than accepting it at face value. And RED has to do with “fraternity” only circumstantially, and has more to do with the enlighten of destiny, and how our past is linked to our demonstrate. The three films are site not unbiased in France, but also in Poland and Switzerland, and WHITE has primarily Polish dialogs. Hence, a sort of universality is intended.

The three films are also linked in various ways. All three films involve an unfaithful lover who dies, in one procedure or another. All three films involve a chance encounter between the distressed protagonist and a sympathetic observer — the widow and the mistress in BLUE, Karol and Mikolaj in WHITE, the retired deem and the model in RED. Both BLUE and WHITE are about people who fade to fresh surroundings to hasten from his or her disturbed pasts. And RED, ironically, is about someone who never leaves his home in order to wallow in his self-pity.

Kieslowski had done this sort of thing before. In 1988, he “adapted” the Ten Commandments into ten one-hour, modern-day dramas, collectively titled DECALOGUE, that obtain us rethink the meanings of the commandments. In the segment for “Thou Shalt Not Assume,” for instance, we gawk the kidnapping (the theft) of a child from her adopted parents by her natural mother, who thinks she has a fair to her custody. Thus, it turns clear-cut accurate ideals into real-world dramas that have no clear-cut solutions or judgments.

Miramax released long-awaited Region-1 DVDs for the Three Colors trilogy, and they all have kindly video transfers and rewarding extra material. Kieslowski expert Annette Insdorf provides fine running commentaries for all three films. She analyzes the visual, aural, and editorial techniques, the thematic significance, as well as how the final films deviate from their current screenplays. She points out that Kieslowski films often deal with abstract concepts, such as fate, death, and wretchedness, in very concrete ways. She makes an observant bid about the apparent twist of fate in the opening of BLUE: if the hitchhiker were picked up by the family, the ensuing tragedy might not occur. She points out that the dream-like wedding scene in WHITE, which many rob is a flashback, could also be a flash forward (a very attractive, and plausible, thought) . She offers her interpretations to the many symbolisms in the films, such as the frequent fades to unlit in BLUE, the recurring shot of a stooped weak person at a garbage bin, the significance of the concerto music in BLUE, the tango theme in WHITE, and the bolero pick up in RED. She also explains the intentionally cryptic endings of WHITE and RED.

Each disc comes with several featurettes that comprise about 100 minutes of interviews and commentaries by the cast and crew, Insdorf, film critic Geoff Andrew, and film director Agnieszka Holland. The BLUE and WHITE discs also enjoy some early short films by Kieslowski: CONCERT OF WISHES, THE TROLLEY, THE FACE, THE OFFICE. All three discs own a spirited segment called “Kieslowski’s Cinema Lesson,” in which the director explains his intentions in one particular scene. The WHITE and RED discs possess behind-the-scenes footage of Kieslowski giving directions on the area. For Kieslowski fans, perhaps the most poignant clip in these supplements is that of Kieslowski announcing his retirement at the ‘94 Cannes festival, included on the RED disc.

The Three Colors Trilogy comprises 3 marvelous films (Bleu/Blanc/Rouge) by the slack, mammoth director Krzysztof Kieslowski. The films expend the symbolism expressed by the colors of the French flag for their themes (liberty, equality, fraternity) . The Three Colors is Kieslowski’s crowning achievement, and Rouge, his final film, is probably his masterpiece. That’s saying something, because some of his previous films (Decalogue, The Double Life of Veronique) are among the greatest films of the last 20 years! I saw Bleu (with Juliette Binoche) a long time ago and was very impressed. It’s a dark but beautful movie, about a composer’s widow and how she copes with life after his death. Blanc (with Julie Delpy) is about life for a man after he is unceremoniously dumped by his wife; it’s the lightest and most comedic of the three films. Rouge (with Irene Jacob) is my well-liked and explores the sorrowful (and platonic) relationship that develops between a young lady and an older man. Jacob is quite simply a goddess, and if you can gallop your eyes away from her long enough to pay attention to the movie, you’ll accept this is a thematically rich film with solid, subtle performances (Kieslowski was nominated for a Best Director Oscar for Rouge in 1995) . I am lucky enough to fill a DVD of Rouge which has a ton of extras (making of, deleted scenes, soundtrack samples, trailers, film-making lesson by the director, Cannes festival interviews, extended interviews with editor, director, and *sigh* Irene Jacob) . I beget the upcoming Miramax DVDs keep these features (with subtitles), which are in French. More Americans should experience these films. They are so well-made and lovingly crafted that they save to shame all the multi-million dollar, shallow, explosion-fests routinely shovelled out by Hollywood nowadays. Next to Stanley Kubrick and Akira Kurosawa, Krzysztof Kieslowski’s death in the 1990s is one of the most tragic for cinema. Younger filmmakers should hope one day to reach even an iota of the MANY intellectual masterpieces created of these film masters. Discover The Three Colors Trilogy! This is film-making at its finest and totally a 5 STAR recommendation!

It is valuable that you know exactly what Image of an Assassination is before you resolve to utilize your money on it. The entire focus of the DVD is Abraham Zapruder’s 26-second, 8 mm film showing the assassination of John F. Kennedy from inaugurate to execute. This is not a “who shot JFK? ” documentary - there’s no position for conspiracy theories or defenses of the Warren Commission conclusions to be found here. This is a unique and remarkable improved witness at the single most indispensable part of evidence in the assassination of President Kennedy, complemented by a sight at the process leisurely the digitalization of the film. There is no sincere analysis of the film, and no allusion to the criticisms some have made about the integrity of the film. Any conclusions to be made are left up to the viewer, and this video gives the viewer the ultimate gaze at this most famed, most essential home video ever made.

The documentary does provide a timeline for the novel film’s depart across the decades, beginning on the morning of November 22, 1963, when the meek and aloof Abraham Zapruder was encouraged to go home and accumulate his camera so that he could film the passing of the Presidential motorcade. You accumulate a brief personal peep at Zapruder himself, a most reluctant of celebrities, including footage of the interview he gave to TV space WFAA hours after the assassination. There are interviews with several individuals associated with Zapruder and Time Life, the company which bought the rights to the film in the days after the assassination. You will follow the hurry of the new film to the possession of Time Life (oddly, there is no mention of the mysteriously reversed frames that were printed in Life magazine shortly after the assassination) and, in 1975, help to the Zapruder family (it was sold benefit for $1) . Time Life was feeling a petite heat from the public for supposedly suppressing the fresh film itself after an obviously second-generation copy was unveiled to the American television public by ABC on Geraldo Rivera’s talk demonstrate Proper Night America in March of that year. The Zapruder family asked the National Archives to pick possession of the film so that it could be stored under optimal conditions, and that is where the modern 26-second film remains.

At this point, we accumulate into the fresh project to manufacture a digital copy of the unique film, one that could be made available to researchers and the public at mountainous. Every time the unique film is taken out of chilly storage and viewed, deterioration is possible, and indeed some problems have been caused by the copying of the film arrangement benefit in 1963. It is an impressive, laborious, strictly controlled process of a highly technical, ruthlessly documented nature, but it is great more than that. The digitalization process allowed for the ample improvement of the novel film’s quality. Each frame was scanned at resolutions up to 1500 dpi so that the footage could be blown up larger, dust and scratches were removed (except for those around the splices, which were unbiased too damaged), and the sequencing is well nigh perfectly done. Best of all, though, we can now plan the each frame from one film edge to the other, including all of the sprocket holes. Thus, some details can now be seen for the very first time.

The video is only 45 minutes long, culminating in several normal bustle and slow-motion versions of the recent and improved Zapruder film. The detail and color is improbable, but is this ultimate version of the 26-second film worth the money to you? If you are a casual JFK assassination nut, perhaps not. If you are serious about your armchair JFK assassination sleuthing, however, Image of an Assassination is a bargain at any imprint. Hordes of researchers over the years would have given their suitable arms for a version of the film half as obvious as this one. The Zapruder film is the most crucial fragment of evidence we have from November 22, 1963; Image of an Assassination gives you access to the Holy Grail of JFK assassination evidence.

Here it is in all it’s gory glory. The most critical relate from that fateful day in Dealey Plaza - the Zapruder film. I bought a copy of this film on VHS when it first came out in 1998. I don’t win whether it had all the extras that this version has but it’s nice to finally fill it on DVD. I unbiased finished reading Robert J. Groden’s The Killing Of A President (an suited collection of photographic evidence) and wanted to plan the Zapruder film one more time. This DVD contains 4 different versions of the assassination as well as the entire interview of Abraham Zapruder from later that day and the entire Goodnight America segment (featuring Groden) . We owe Abraham Zapruder a debt of thanks for being in the upright residence at the execrable time to represent this historic footage. Thank you Abraham.
