Desogen, a good birth control option?
Since early 1960s, hormonal methods of contraception became recognized with the introduction of the first oral contraceptive pills. This revolutionized discovery has become the easy yet effective birth control option. It is now widely prescribed and used around the world.
One of such effective oral contraceptive pill is Desogen. Desogen contains mixture of hormones named ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel which work as the inhibiting factor for ovary to release its eggs, and hence, prevent the normal ovulation process. In addition the hormones contained in Desogen also make it difficult for any sperm to reach the egg cell.
Desogen has become popular birth control pills as it offers not only as the birth control pill, but it also offer advantages such as:
1) Decreased possibility of ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer
2) Decreased incidence of functional ovarian cysts
3) Decreased incidence of ectopic pregnancies.
There are reports on women suffering continuously from depression, loss of sexual interest and head ache after the usage of Desogen. However, later clinical test has shown that this might be due to complication of using other drugs in combination with Desogen. Vitamin C, St. John’s wort, phenylbutazone, acetaminophen, and HIV medicines have been reported to affect the function of Desogen and also decrease its effectiveness in providing birth control.
Precaution when you are using Desogen
Consult your doctor before using Desogen if
- You are pregnant
- You just recently gave birth
- You have had a stroke or heart problem
- You have suffered from respiratory problems
- You have breast cancer
- You have any history of jaundice caused by other contraceptive pills
- You have suffered from liver problem, as Desogen is metabolized in the liver.
- You suffer from depression, diabetes and cholesterol.
Side effects of Desogen:
Depression, anxiety, headache and vaginal bleeding are the reported findings of side effect of the Desogen. Consult your doctor immediately if you suffered from these symptoms for more than 2 weeks.
